Stocky's twincharge project

Well since my car is now no longer atmo, i think it can be upgraded to the forced section of the site.

I've had the car for about 4 years now and it went from being a stock auto executive to a supercharged manual with 131rwkw on standard management. Now it has undergone another set of changes with a much higher power goal in mind. I thought i'd do something a bit different this time around and have decided to twincharge the car using an Eaton M90 supercharger and a GT40 turbo. I went twin cam at the same time, just for kicks.

The car currently is being run in with just the turbo on, using an R33 skyline base map. It runs amazingly well, almost like a factory engine, and doesn't ping at all right up to redline. The injectors are maxing out at 5000rpm however. I have a set of 550cc Nismo items ready to go in.

It looks like this:

But has this under the bonnet:

Parts list:
3ltr block
ACL casties, standard bore size, ACL race series rings.
Rods - standard. Crack tested, cryo treated, beam polished then shot peened.
Bearings: Nissan mains, clevite 77 rods.
R32 GTR oil pump.

R33 RB25DE head
lightly ported exhaust side
fully rebuilt, new valve guides, reseated valves etc
stock cams
stock cam springs <--- probably not for long, we'll see.....
RB25DET 380cc injectors for now.

Custom JD plenum
XF throttle body (3 inch)

Hot side:
Stocky Racing Industries tubular, split pulse exhaust manifold
50mm HKS racegate with merge pipes from each collector.
Full house GT40 turbo. 1.34 exhaust A/R, split pulse. 0.72 A/R compressor. 4 inch inlet.
Stocky Racing Industries 3.5 inch dump pipe.
Stocky Racing Industries 3 inch cat-back mandrel bent exhaust.
Stocky Racing Industries 3 inch stainless cooler piping.

Eaton M90 supercharger, custom shortened drive snout for clearance. 1.8x crank speed drive.
Garrett 32mm wastegate setup as a bypass valve for the blower.

Hybrid front mount.
PowerFC.
Q45 AFM in the piping.

I built this whole engine myself (my first time) except for the head reconditioning. I assembled and checked all the clearances for the bottom end, which was a good learning experience i must say. I taught myself how to weld (stick welder pfff) and made two exhaust manifolds (didn't like the first one) and all the intercooler piping to save money. Being a cheapass student makes it interesting. It took me 2 years to get all the parts together! I certainly haven't wasted any money in making the car or the engine bay look nicer that's for sure. Function before form remember!

Currently the car has done 2000km on 10psi and is running beautifully. The turbo is not as laggy as you'd think it would be, i get 3psi by redline in 1st gear, and full juice at 4500 in 2nd, whereupon it breaks traction pretty well. It is quicker than an XR6 turbo to 100km/h which is nice.

The supercharger is in at the machinist's getting modified now, i hope to have the twincharge fully going and tuned by the end of the year. I will be requiring an R33 5spd gearbox before that time i suspect, the old MF5 won't like 300+rwkw.

Cheers,

Stocky

Good one Stocky

Mate looks good and lives up to the motto of Zoom Magazine "Puts go before show".

I wanted to build my whole car with my old man but he didnt have the time and I didnt want to F u(k it up. Anyone given any estimates on how quick she will go once all bolted up.

The wastegates sitting nice and hi though.....I suppose it will make it easier to work on .

Now I understand the mcgyver avatar....

Keep us updated mate.

jesus i submitted this 4 months ago and it finally got up. awesome.

if i had my digicam here (rob stole it) i could take some new engine bay shots. i found an excellent machinist to make me up some custom pullies to drive the blower and they are working beautifully. i have a toothed cam belt driving my power steering pump, and a billet 1.7x 8-rib drive pulley sitting on the end of it ready to drive the blower. you'd have to see pictures to get what i'm doing. hoping to have the blower physically mounted in a few weeks. then pull the turbo off to see how close i was with the drive ratio. i want 7-8psi from the blower and the rest from the turbo.

how fast? as much as the stock rods can take safely i guess. 300rwkw *should* be a walk in the park through a manual box.

another problem is the cam timing - it is probably totally off, as i have used a custom belt drive for the cams obviously. don't have a dial guage or degree plate to check it yet. if it's totally rooted when i get it on the dyno then i'll know that i need some cam gears. i bet that happens, just to 5hit me.
.

can't wait to see more, so refreshing to see someone pulling such an ambitious project in their own shed, on their own, without needing to hire "ethnic workshop x" to change their oil

keep us updated, can't wait to see more

yeah man - never been in a workshop yet

the only time it will go there is when it needs to be tuned, i'll probably get matty spry to do it, he seems to be the goods when it comes to fiddling with tunes. this sucker is going to need a good tuner too because it won't behave anything like a normal engine would. it'll deliver power like a turbo V8, and he'll have his work cut out for him with timing and fuel delivery. haha he'll also have to tune it all the way up from 1500rpm to redline on full power, because there'll be boost below 2000 when you floor it. ah well i have confidence in him

yeah dave - the dyno sheets will tell the story. it'll either do exactly what i want it to the first time out, or i'll have to d1ck around with cam timing. it's the only thing i haven't been able to afford yet - adjustable cam gears.

johnny is probably more efficient with a pfc than matt.

whereas matt is far more the chosen one for autronic and motec.
