hello fellas brillient thread and thanks for all the help as i am gonna need it i think!

umm, just one thing the bel housing on the MX7 can u take it off and put it on the R33GTST Gearbox? or not work???

(just the outside casing where the clutch fork hole is ect)

oh and did u also say that the VLT tail shaft DOES NOT NEED THE R33 YOKE???

also does that mean the spigit for the Clutch ect. is the same as a MX7 i heard they were different!? but obersly not if everyone has done it!

Spigots are the same for all RB manual boxes.

Yes the MX7 tail shaft will fit straight up to the R33 box.

Why change bellhousings its been said the 10" clutch fits fine into the R33 box.

Also, short shifters are a good quick way to bugger your syncros. So remember that when your box is buggered.

The drive gears themselves are strong as an ox, however the syncros are still as weak as any standard production manual transmission syncros are.

Happened to be browsing through the site and came across this guy that said the following.

Quote:
the vl turbo flywheel and clutch supposbly is meant to fit in the r33 box... But i tried it and it didnt work. not fors hit. I eventually got the box and flywheel and that spinning in the r33 box freely, after i had grinded out some of the housing. but the actual starter motor then wouldn't fit.

87Calais has actually tested this for a fact as stated earlier in the thread and said it will not fit without grinding.

Therfore im going to say that either there is a couple of different box models or more then likely the people who claim the 10" flywheel/clutch fit without grinding/modification are mistaken.

I think its just inconsistencies in the castings. I am going to use a vlt 10" clutch and flywheel in my r33 box for the torana. The flywheel only JUST touch the bellhousing. its pretty much ground off the spot anyways. It was really small. More on the 10"flywheel and clutch into the r33 box. What throwout bearing and carrier are people using? My box came with the fork and thrust/throwout bearing, but will this be ok with the vlt clutch? Its just an exedy hd unit.

I tryed the 10" gear in mine and it was just going to hit, i had to get a clutch built either way so i just got a 9.5" built to save the hassles. If you were set on using the 10" gear you could make it fit, but in my case it was easier to get a 9.5" clutch built. The 9.5" i got built actually has better clamping capacity than the HD 10" i used to have in the MX7 box, and is a much nicer clutch to drive with.

I used the R33 carrier as the clutch i used had a skyline cover and diaphram. If you are running the VL clutch cover etc then id stick with the VL carrier. The actual bearing is the same.

My 10" flywheel DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID fit. I can assure you of that. It was close but it fitted.

Also what is the go with short shifters destroying the synchros ? I don't see how this is possible. All they are doing is raising the pivot point of the shifter and using common physics to make the shifts shorter. They still sit in the selectors the same so I couldn't see them doing any damage to the synchros ? I just put a very short shifter in my box so let me know whats the go

its forcing you to change gears more quickly hence forcing the synchros to do their job more quickly. just imagine you had a standard shifter and just shifted very quickly and hard all the time..

I'm trying to pull out my mx7 gearbox, yet i am having heaps of trouble unbolting the starter motor.
As far as i can see it has 2 bolts holding it in place, and i cannot for the life of me get to one of em. (i have already disconected the wires).

So i am hoping i can just lower and manouver it all down with the starter motor still attatched.

and apart from that, it looks like only 4 bolts hold the mx7 to the engine, is that right???

any help?????
thanks.

ive done a search on tailshafts and it seems that any auto or mx7 yoke fits. The autos seem to be the same as the mx7, i could be wrong but. ;P

Doh, that didnt really answer your question! Anyways, does anybody know for sure if the auto yokes go into the r33 box?

I have to disagree natho, a short shifter is better for syncros because you have to push harder on the shifter to put the same pressure on the syncro. So while you push as hard on the stick as a normal length u put less pressure on the syncro. A shorter shifter doesn't really speed up the gear changing.
I made my r33 shifter perfectly straight, solid and about 30mm shorter. Making it solid gives the best feel, very notchy, makes it good for racing!

On yokes, the auto yokes don't fit. The r33 yokes have a non changable uni so aren't the best but can be used until the uni shats itself. I also have a yoke from a v6 4wd navara which uses the same box (with a transfer case...). The yoke is longer and has a heavier looking changable uni! If any1 has a problem with yoke strength i'd chase up a navara yoke.

I've been chasing another box, out of 4 major wreckers i rang, 1 had 2 boxes in stock for $1800. Another had brand spankers for $3200. Other prices i found interesting were r32 gtr for $1200, gts-4 for $600 (really bad ratios apperantly), and a 300zx tt for $600. 1 place offered to fit a gts-4 bell housing (and front case) to a 300zx box for $1200! Only don't 300zx have a remote shifter???

well my tally so far is:

Gearbox inc shifter with master and slave cylinder: $1500
Exedy Button clutch (9.5 inch): $450 delivered
Brand new vlt yoke ( http://www.hardyspicer.com.au/browse...0 ;&NoDHTML=1 ): $109
MX7 speedo pinion gear thingo: $23 (from nissan Brookevale)

so i suppose the money left to spend is:
-Have vlt yoke fitted to n/a tailshaft
-Machine flywheel for new clutch

and thats it?

im having trouble finding NA VL MANUAL, sandwich plate, starter and flywheel.

i know the r32 starter can be used (GTS or GTST or both???)

but can the rest be sourced out of an R31?? I am pretty certain that they too use the MF5 box so i would assume they use the same flywheel, sandwhich plate, and starter motor.
I assume that manual r31's are more common than Manual NA VL's, making the parts a little easier to come by.

Has anybody tried swapping the bellhousings over?? Not that i have looked into it yet, but i don't see why you couldnt swap them over, and as far as i can determine this you would eliminate 99% of your problems in the change-over and make it a genuine straight fit (into an MX7 VLT). Something i might look into over the next few days.

also what is the deal with that hose that runs over the top of the r33 box, where does it plug into if at all????? the mx7 has the same plug/connector for it, yet i cannot find any hose or fitting for it to conect onto. do i get rid of it or does it actually plug onto somewhere?? i assume it is for the tranny oil.
im getting the fealing ive been running without a hose for long time (which would explain a lot)!!!!
