hey im having some troubles. i changed my old ignition barell out because you could turn it onto acc and ignition, but you couldnt turn it far enough to engage the starter motor. put a new one in and still the same problem.

ok i worked it out.

see the pics in this thread:

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=108402

i had to lower the colum using 13mm socket bits to access the top 8mm scrw holding in the white ignition switch

after i had done this i could under the 2 bottom 8mm screws and remove the ingnition switch

the switch was no longer sliding back and forward properly, so i pulled it apart and reseated all the internal components and clamped the switch back together again.

it was a bit fiddly but i got it done and the car now starts again

thankyou for this sweet tech article Matty!

I guess SLs have a bit of a different setup, as i had screws holding in the indicator stork, but bolts, and the hole you had to make, is already there on a berlina

but this guide was Awesome, and saved me hours, i had it done in less then ten mins,

Any idea where the best place to get ignition barrels from now? I emailed www.ozeparts.com.au they are only doing body parts now.

ive ordered mine off ebay for $30.....question, how the hell are you supposed to take off the metal housing that the ignition barrel goes in??? i need to take it off as when they smashed my ignition barrel forward they chewed out teeth in the cog gear thing thats inside.

gregories talks about some snap ring ontop of the steering shaft but i cant get to it..?

get a steering wheel puller?

its like a harmonic balancer puller.. go buy one from super cheap, use it and then take it back saying it wasnt big enough for your car.

with getting the steering wheel off just undo the nut a bit n give the bolt a decent hit with a hammer, will come off easy

Or you can hit the sides of the steering wheel a few times with your hands to shock it loose, much like using a hammer on the bolt but no risk of damaging the thread on the column.

Im also having mayjor dramas pulling my barrel out...

if anyone's got any info on how i remove this thing it would be a great help! It almost looks like a factory fitted item, i cant see there being anyway of removing it besides a grinder! after trying to just get the barrel out i decided id just replace the whole column, but the metal surrounding doesn't even allow me to undo the wires!

My VL (with metal surround)

That shield is the inner part of a Full Metal Jacket. Only way I found to remove it was to cut slots in the dome headed screws (they look like big rivets but are actually pk screws) for a screwdriver and get them out that way. The thing is then loosely interlocked but it will wangle off after that.
