The Ignition barrel guide

UPDATED WITH PICS AGAIN! (thanks to to niche)

The total guide to VL ignition barrel replacement

Hello, This guide has come about by me reading Calaisturbo.com.au and seeing all the people posting about them. I just swoped mine with grate difficulty but now knowing how i think i could do it within 10 minutes. this tutor will go through the tools needed and step by step with pictures.

The tools needed are as follows.

other things you will need is another barrel, you can get it from were ever you can but i recommend www.ozeparts.com.au .. there $30 + $8 postage.

The first thing you will need to do it to remove the plastic over at the bottom of the steering column, i don't have photos of this step because i lost the screws for it so i don't use it anymore. To remove it there is 3 phillip head screws from under.

once it is removed you will see 2 plugs (as in photo) just take them apart.. there both one way in one way out so you cant get them mixed up.

after that you can now take the steering wheel off.

if you haven't taken it off before follow the following steps for a stock wheel, if you are not running a stock wheel you will have to take off the boss kit and so on.

For the stock wheel the first step is to remove the horn cover. to remove the cover just put your hands either side and pop it off. (watch out for the 4 springs on the other side.. there a bitch) You might like to take off the battery so you don't keep hitting the horn. once it is off you will see its connect to a black cable, just unplug it.

now you will see a black panel with like a H shaped peace of mettle, that's the positive for the horn. in the photo il highlights were to put a flat head driver to pop it off.

Now there is a big nut, That holds the steering wheel on. you can use plyers, a wheel brace or the right sized socket to get it off because it is hard to get a spanner or so in there, then replacing it only do it finger tight as it doesn't need to be tight and making it easier for removal in the future. (HINT: if you want your steering wheel to sit on straight move the wheel before removing it so it is straight so when you replace it you will get it on straight.)

Now the wheel it off you will see the orange plastic and the blinker arm. remove the screws highlighted here. use the 8mm socket to get the black ones. It is very hard to get to them, there must be an easier way but i don't know. the blinker arm can be removed now by feeding the cable and plug up through the column. don't forget the hazard switch, it just screws out.

Now all that is out of the way your almost done.

Get your flat head driver now and sit it were is highlighted in the picture. In the indented section not on the raised peace but right up on the ledge. Use minimum force to crack the alloy and once it is cracked put the key in the barrel and turn to "on" position and it will just come out EASY as.

Now you will have it looking something like...

as you can see all the driver marks when i was trying to find the soft place to push through -_-

now put the new barrel onto the "on" position as well. Push it into the hole the same way the other come out, it will hit a hard spot were you will just need to give it a light hit. you will hear a clicking sound knowing it is into place.

now it will look like....

Just do the same as you did to remove all the items to replace them.

This should take about 20 minutes for your first go.

Matty.

about using the pliers to get the nut off - I found the largest "end" of a normal wheel brace fits perfectly over the top of it!

Just wait till that bearing that retains the steering column in place fails. happened to me and the steering wheels fell out into my lap.

Yes, quite a common problem that bearin, dont waste your time in replacing it either, as from the factory its got a rolled egde holdingit in, you can never hold them in right

Well i done this tonight with a mate... Bit harder then i initially thought because i had a boss kit. And the actual ignition barrel was a bit of a prick to get out... But thanks for the write up mate, well done
