VL SL Turbo Build

After many month of looking for a good base to start on, I finally found the best candidate.

Model: 1986 VL SL
Engine: RB30E
Gearbox: 5speed
Suspension: Standard
Brakes: Standard (However optioned with rear disc brakes)
Exhaust: Extractors, 2.5" through

Plans:
Rebuild Engine to standard Turbo Specs (only with better bearings, small cam)
Will not be going forged anything only looking to make 225-275kw
Injectors
Standard Turbo, high flowed. (maybe a bit bigger, will stay low mount)
Forward facing plenum
Intercooler
ECU (tune)
Fuel pump if needed
R33 Gearbox (decent clutch)
LSD diff at some stage.

As you can tell this is just going to be a cruiser.

Should have some progress up sooner or later.

Just a small update and couple of pics.

The motor is out now, just cleaning up the bay. Hopefully to make room for a freshly rebuilt a8 motor.

I'll get pics up of the bay, when I can get some.

Updates!!

Finally pulled my finger out and got some real progress going.
Plans have changed a little.

Basically gonna get the car decent before I get any go fast parts.
So pretty much redone the suspension, brakes and diff.

screen shots

Went for nolathane rubbers all round, 30mm whiteline sway bar up front, 22mm rear. Lowered monroe struts all round with superlow king springs.
Rather than go through the pain of installing all the rubbers i bought whole new control arms front and back. Also got new sway bar links and strut mounts.

As for brakes I went full vt front brake upgrade with the kit from Race Brakes Sydney. VT Booster, Master cylinder, hub adaptors, VT DBA T2 front rotors with new bendix pads and braided lines all round. Got some reconditioned vt calipers up front with sink coated brackets.
Also got reco'd rear vl calipers as well with DBA T2 rotors, bendix pads and braided lines too.

Modified the old bracket to suit the larger setup

snagit

And the diff got some goodies too with 31 spline axles, billet full spool and new Dana Spicer 3.73 gears.

Big difference between 25 spline and 31 spline

What I'm waiting for now is just for the diff to get built and ill put that in and finish putting the rear end together.

Hopefully have some decent time off over christmas to start with the fun parts!

Good to see your doing all the important parts and not neglecting them and just slapping an upgraded engine in

Cheers guys, appreciate it.
The car was starting to lack in the brake department and it wasn't the best ride, so something defiantly needed to be done about that first.
Done a bit of research after putting together the braided lines and having one of the fittings striping out. Turns out the brand I was using have had some problems, so gonna swap them out for some Aussie made items.
Next time I'm away from work I'll take a decent camera and get some quality pics.

Yeah I went for pretty much all PBR gear apart from pads and the braided lines.
PBR makes great quality gear.
Though not all of us know people in brake workshops haha.
I am told the HEL performance lines is a well regarded product and will be ordering these lines as let's be honest the difference between brakes working or failing can mean the difference between life and death. :/

true that i havent heard of HEL. the mate at a brake shop was able to make custom half vl half rx7 hoses for my setup. i was a bit sketchy on using adapters and stuff aswell. Bendix pads and dba discs on mine. standard enough gear but definately not cheap rubbish.

May swell update. Been together for a while now but hey.

Diff is all in. 31spline billet full spool with billet axels and a new set of 3.7 gears.

Brakes are excellent, never had so much stopping power. VT booster, VT master cylinder, Reco'd VT from callipers, Reco'd vl rear callipers, bendix pads, dba slotted rotors, HEL braided lines.

Suspension done all round.

Fuse box moved to the glove box.

Battery relocated to boot.

Got an r33 gearbox waiting, just gotta get clutch and a couple other bits.

very nice, quickly though the Turbo dash badge should be on the drivers side of the stereo and where your turbo badge is the Commodore SL badge is normally still fittted. Good luck finding a beige shifter surround. theyre a pain to get in the correct colour but it'll really lift the interior!

Yeah, i know. its the wrong turbo badge anyways. Gotta find a "commodore SL" badge then ill change it over. Never really thought about changing the surround. but ill look into it.

Not everything came in the one package.

From race brakes sydney:
The booster and master cylinder came together, prefabbed to fit straight on using the original bracket. Hubs and bearing came together.

From random workshop:
Got the reco'd callipers, silver with sink brackets, new seals and pistons.

Braided lines come made to suit the conversions just from an ebay store.

Rotors got from ebay for a good price too. as well as pads.

Insane breaking power from this upgrade, highly recommend.

Not really sure on the motor, it will be this year sometime I imagine, plenty of time.
Cheers for the heads up on the surround.

Have you got a link to the package or did you go in store? I went on their website but couldn't find anything. And how much did you pay? Looking at doing similar on my wagon. Cheers mate

i did my VL package on the cheap. i think the front rx7's adaptors, rebuilds and master and booster (vt) conversion cost me 5-600 al up. new they'll charge you about 4-600 for just the booster and MC.

They have an ebay store, thats where I got there gear from.

http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/racebrakessydneysales

And it looks like they have upped the price for the booster/MC combo.
It is all new PBR stuff, so its of decent quality. Comes with the adaptors for the brake lines too.

But the other stuff I was able to get cheaper from else where.

i have the same booster/master setup as that, got it from a guy on here who was making them himself. I think it cost about $200. On my other car i have the plastic VS booster/VT master combo which cost about $75 (not including adaptors which i got from race brakes)

G'day people,

Haven't done much lately, just playing with small bits and pieces.
Tryin to balance between savings for a house, this build and having time between work.

Battery and fuse box relocated.

Couple of pics.
