As an Exec it will have one of these codes after the model code -
A8Q Executive Package - Incl. LFI, ML4
A8R Executive Package - Incl. LW5, MS1
A8S Executive Package - Incl. LV2, M40

No, the colour of the bumper and door mouldings are not coded on the plate.

If its an SL or a Berlina with anything other than the standard 4H017 Grey bumpers then they would have been painted at the dealer, even Formula Packs.

If it's a Calais then the book calls up 4J023 Asteroid Trim for the bars and moulds for cars painted Marlin Blue.

So far, ive worked out my 9/86 VL Berlina Formula has,

75L (1F075) Medium Red Solid Paint - Exterior - Maranello 1986, 1987, 1988

*8VL19 Commodore Sedan Berlina, Formula

LFI Engine - L6, 3.0 Litre EFI

GM3 Axle Ratio - Rear 3.45:1 - 3.0 Litre Engine

ML4 Automatic Transmission - 4 Speed with Clutch Converter

but how do i work out the other stuff, i get the feeling the formula came with fe2 a well as its bloody low and stock?

also have LE Wing, Colour coded bumpers, Formula Interior (headrests) and stuff from what i gather..

If it's bloody low then it won't be stock. FE2 is a little lower than standard but not by much. Unless the original owner requested it as an option it won't be fitted to your car. FE2 equipped cars had linear rate springs (not progressive) and had different thickness swaybars from standard. Nothing to do with a Formula Pack option I'm afraid.

The only way you'll find out for sure is if you can find the cars build sheet which may be located under the carpet. Some came with them, some didn't.

Also, as the Formula Pack option was a dealer fitted pack you'll find no reference to it on the cars plates or the build sheet. All it consisted of was a spongy rubber front and rear spoiler (with little Formula badges stuck into them), headrest inserts and Formula name/pinstriping. Painting the bumpers was also part of this.

nar, not low as in lowered though, but its still fairly low, lower than standard, and its hard to bounce too, so still in good nick. the cars stock except lpg.

looks like the log books state it was first registered to young and green holden dealer in newcastle, before going to the first owners up here in Kotingal, and then to the guy i brought it off in moonbi 50km away. im gathering it may have been kitted out if it was owned by holden, maybe as a demo, or show off car?

You're right. Being a relatively early car and registered to the dealer it was probably used as a bit of a draw card in the showroom and as a demo.

Does it have the stock 14" rims, or 15" ?
FE2 would seem a little pointless if it still ran 14's and large profile tyres.
Best bet would be to look for the build sheet. It'll tell you exactly what it came out of the factory doors with.

okay,so mine has the codes vl8VK19-125....does this mean it is an sl? it has power steering, air con,and an mx7 and i have been told that if it was an sl it would most likely have not had ALL of these. its solid white with sandalwood interior(i think thats what its called). sorry about all the questions, really just want to find out a bit of history of my car,and what it really is. ch
A 125 pack is the same as mine, except I don't have the aircon, which you could option at the time anyway. In fact the dealer queried me at the time that I was sure I wanted a car without aircon. So yours would be an SL, not an Exec.

125 Pack - Includes LW5, MX7, JM8, QQS - 8VK

Translates to a turbo package for an SL with Bridgestone tyres.

On European cars it used to stand for Sports Light I think, years ago (1950/60's). You still get SL Mercs that are not so light though.

In Holden-speak it just means the bare bones base model. It's a leftover from their old SL, SL/X, SL/E days from the Gemini and early Commodore days which just confused people.

At least they're light though I guess, but only because they left all the creature comforts out.

Thanks. Could you check it again though. Is it something like 1D079 perhaps ?
Solid (non-metallic) colours start with 1, then a letter, then three digits.

Paint colours on the first page updated and sorted to be more readable.

No real paint code as such for the interior trim bits as there's about six different shades of grey in there. You'll have to get it colour matched in something like SEM vinyl paint unfortunately.

Best bet would be to colour match the small patch under the seat, or under the back seat belt fairings at the back corner as they'd have been less susceptable to fading over the years.

Mostly trim, the doors and seats are unique to the A9Q. They were basically a run-out special.
I don't have a full list of everything fitted to them just now though.
