a cheap respray is cheap for a reason...a closed door respray is still a couple of grand. im looking at doing a tafe summer course on how to prep and paint, try and commit a closed door respray myself! whether it will be good tho is another story haha

Tafe places will paint your car for the price of the paint, they use peoples cars as test dummies for students.

"If" I paint my VL, I will do all the prep work myself and maybe the primer, got a mate who's an apprentice spray painter who is going to show me what to do. Hardest part about a paint job is committing to a colour.

You're looking at 1k for the worst painjob in town, it'll look bad within 10 metres, have more runs than Bradman, be overspray city and in 2 years all the clear will be flaking off and you'll be wishing you never bothered.

tafe paint jobs are not much cheaper at all than most everyday panelshops and you would probably not trust your car there at all, being a tafe student myself and seeing what goes on in the paint shop and who works on the cars, a roller and some bunnings house paint or fiddley bits pressure pack will have a more consistant finish,

have a look in the yellow pages and look at some of the smaller panel shops and have a ring around becasue some of them are quite keen on jobs at the moment

Sucks but its true. If you want a quality paint job there isn't such a thing as cheap. Its one of those things you can't skimp on.

OLDGOLD, outta interest do you own a vl anymore?

Nah mate just in the shed, followed information from google.. the $250 was the cost of materials

He learnt one lesson though... make sure you wax and grease remover the whole car... ended up with a few cracks in the boot area..

New owner still loved it

i did my own bout 4 years ago in a shed with one of those giant outdoor shade things over the car, the ones that look like mini houses, and used my uncles spray gun, turned out pretty good till the cold started to seep in and cloud the paint...

also theres a paint joint in balcatta not far from the odin tavern that will mix auto paint and package it into aerosol cans

Not personally, because I know what happens when you get a car painted as quickly as you can with the cheapest materials possible by the dodgiest panel beater you can find.

That's it - just spraying the car is only a small fraction of the work, it's the hours and hours of prep work that add up to big dollars and a decent paint job.

I don't own a VL anymore, I've learned my lesson (for the time being, anyways, none of us are immune from irrationality!)

I painted my 4WD like this (enamel + rollers), and it actually looks pretty boss (considering it cost about $70)
