I do not agree with this. The driver is at fault, not the car.

It is a harsh punishment, that will only see more people try to run from the cops for fear that their car will be crushed.

Given that there is a gray area over if the car has three strikes or the driver has three strikes, someone could be driving your car and it would be crushed if it is their 3rd strike.

The White VT was crushed at Norstar recycling in Dandenong and was crushed because the owner did not pay the impound fees, thus it was surrendered to the state, so they crushed it and filmed it to talk about their "proposed" changes.

Therefore, the law is not passed yet, but it is under review to increase the impound time (and cost) as well as the 3rd strike crushing offense.

Article:
Quote:
POLICE struck a crushing blow to hoon drivers yesterday, flattening an impounded car and warning that more than 40 others are earmarked for the same fate.

A Holden Commodore belonging to a serial hoon was squashed beyond use at a Dandenong wrecker's yard.

The crushing may make a lead-footed Porsche driver, who opened up his sports car on the West Gate Freeway to 215km/h in a 100km/h zone, somewhat nervous.

The 39-year-old St Kilda man had his car impounded for 48 hours after the early morning burst on June 25. He will be charged on summons.

Under proposed changes to the hoon legislation, to be introduced in coming months, police will be able to impound vehicles for a week, up from 48 hours, with second-time offenders facing vehicle impoundment of up to 28 days.

The car crushed yesterday belonged to a 22-year-old three-time offender from Hamilton who lost his car under the ''three strikes'' rule.

Since hoon laws were introduced four years ago police have impounded 11,370 vehicles, with Holden in the majority (46.3 per cent), followed by Ford (16.7 per cent), Nissan (7.8 per cent), Toyota (5.1 per cent) and Honda (4.3 per cent).

Victoria's top traffic policeman Ken Lay said police had impounded more than 40 cars that would be crushed because their owners had not paid impoundment fees or it was unsafe to return them to the roads.

''If we permanently seize a vehicle that is not of a high safety standard, in that it does not have features such as ABS and airbags, I cannot, in good conscience, send that vehicle back into the community,'' the deputy commissioner said.

Police Minister Bob Cameron had shifted into reverse at the car-crushing photo opportunity yesterday. Two years ago he labelled the idea as ''short-sighted and populist'' and said the Liberal Party's call to crush cars was ''completely irresponsible''. Yesterday he said he did not want to see good cars crushed. ''If they are unsafe I have no problems with them being crushed.''

P-platers make up 40 per cent of the owners of seized vehicles, with 46 per cent owned by fully licensed drivers. St Albans is the top of the hoon suburb list, followed by Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Mildura and Shepparton.

Deputy Commissioner Lay said police were sending a clear message to hoons.

nothing to do with consistency

the state owns the car and crushed it

if it was a $40K car they'd sell it and keep the $

---------- Post added 29-07-10 at 02:41 ----------

Darkstar, it's taking the weapon away from the driver just like confiscating guns from a person who has shot people
the person is penalised too via fines etc but the car is taken out of the equation

yeh there'll be grey areas but maybe people will think twice before they lend a car to an idiot

re a possible increase in cowards running, that is unproven heresay esp considering laws have been in place in other states for a while and there is no evidence to back that up.

i agree with aus880, car is the tool, hoons dont deserve them if theyre constantly mis-using them. gues ud have 3 solid chances to get ur act together before this would happen to you.

+2 If they really wanted to stop it a much better idea would be to send the repeat offender to jail if they fail to stop hooning after their 3rd warning so they can rethink their actions and hopefully stop doing what got them sent to jail in the first place.

but giving it back to them, WILL make it easier for them, itll tempt hem to do it again. All of us with well modded cars or cars we actually care about wont be in this situation anyways, its only the few randoms with their beat up manual 6's and not enough sense to actual learn the first time.

i do agree with GMH-383's last statement tho.

true , but the courts are just as flooded with summonds for people being caught hooning. although putting people in jail would probably be more effective punishment it costs money , simply taking there cars makes them money. i hope im never put in this position but i dont plan on stopping if its my turn to get crushed

every single government plan regarding drivers involves revenue raising

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BENJIMAN's

death tolls are the same, injuries are the same, so where is all the revenue going?

roads in melbourne are terrible for commuting

the system is a joke end of story

sorry mate but i think that you are going nowhere fast with your arguments
if a random drives a beat up 6 whats the chances that his parents/siblings drive nice cars. most likely they also drive 6bangers that they will then drive
the same reason why a "hoon" with a done up car wont want to stop is the same reason the police have come up with this new law cash
you wont want to stop because of all the cash that you have poured into your car and this is the most cost effective way for the police
cash rules at the end of the day
its time people just admit it and not hide behind "this is the safest way, most impact"
pigs arse, its the most cost effective way

its a good theory, but wouldnt be practial, there is already overcrowding in prision populations and if someone who is a hoon is sent to jail think about how its going to affect there carear in the future with a criminal record etc. the punishment doesnt fit the crime imo.

That is exactly the reason i wrote "IF THEY REALLY WANTED TO STOP IT" because they don't all they're looking for is ways to make more cash, just like with any other "anti hoon law" like fining someone 230$ and 3 points because their Number Plate is of to the side of the bumper instead of the middle(which is factory in some cars) because if they dont stop that happening those number plates will make the person crash and kill others.... or another example fining someone for their car being 1cm lower then legal, or pulling people over with nice cars and looking for any minor thing they can get them for, this happens just because they know they can make money from it so they do it.
