The Silverslate Ninja

Name: Josh
Model: 1986 Series 1 VL Calais
Colour: Silverslate over Silver
Bodykit: Standard
Engine Type: Notorious Inline Six
Power: Untested
Exhaust: 2 & 1/2 to come
Gearbox: Auto
Diff: Single Spinner
Brakes: Disks all round
Suspension: Ultralows in the back, Gabriel heavy duty shortened shocks to come, Superlows up front.
Wheels/Tyres: 15" Calais
Interior: Comfy series 1. Woodgrain wheel
Stereo: Clarion 2 channel 200w amp, 12" Kicker sub, 6" Kenwood rear splits.
Build Period: Just got it. Not really buliding
Cost: Swapped smashed VR ute

Sorry bout the night time rain photo's but I want to take some at the very start of the "build".

This is my new Calais. April 86 Series 1, Silverslate over Silver with 180,000 genuine k's with books. Small bit of rust but not the worst I've seen. Original paint that needs a good polish. I really want to keep it looking fairly original, neat and tidy.

For the interior I am just gonna steam clean it. fix the switches and put in a woodgrain wheel. I had plans to wire RCA's up to the standard radio but it all got to annoying so just put an old looking head unit in so it looks standard. Also replacing the speedo cos this ones stuffed.

It was completely original when i got it, minus the lowering. An old lady owned it from new and sold it to her Grandson who had it for a month, then i bought it (rescued lol). I am going to replace the head and tailights with new ones and i've cleaned and polished the garnish to make it nice again.

I'm also going to polish the calais rims and install a 2 & 1/2" system to give it some noise. otherwise its going to stay pretty much orig. just a nice low cruiser with power everything

I'll keep you posted

Cheers guys
Josh

should i get a pod. will it make much difference?

just spent sunday morning trying to figure out why central locking wouldn't work. driver power connection came undone so simple! taped plugs together as clip was broken and all sorted!

Leave the airbox on and get a K&N Panel filter, Pod's just suck in hot air anyway, defectable for pods in Vic so I assume in QLD too?

hey guys the cars pretty dumped on what i think are cut springs. it rides like a trampoline. i was gonna replace the shocks with heavy duty shortened ones assuming the shocks in there were og. but it turns out their bilstein yellow ones. looking at this pic do they look rooted? i'm gonna change the springs too don't worry

GOT MY TAX!@! woo hoo

so i got rid of the crappy bilsteins. they were buggered. replaced them with short travel monroe gt shockies today. 120 trade price for a pair. gotta love that. rides a little better but def need to get king springs asap. cut springs suck balls.

also ordered new head lights, 5000k globes, and new tailights as well as a front wheel bearings and brand new centre garnish badge to go on my polished garnish. the old one was bowed in the middle like a rainbow?!

replaced the 800 000k speedo with 112 000 cos it was broken and installed a woodgrain wheel. i'll probaly get the other one tidied up and injected and keep it in the shed so it can be easily returned to all orig.

oh and most importantly got rego today so i can drive it now! yes!!!

Bilstein shock absorbers are great, you can rebuild most types of them. Monroe GT shocks are seriously bottom of the line junk in comparison

Those shocks do look pretty had it however the casings rubbing really bad !

Car looks good tho ! I would definitely invest in a better alarm with some good features if you are going to leave it on the street, stealing a VL is easier then catching a bus.

lol @ stealing a vl is easier than catching a bus!

hey duff, as for your mods i had a 42****km vlc on gas. i did a 2 1/4" exhaust and saw no real power gain. i paired it with a bmc filter and as soon as i pulled out of my driveway felt it! it was a panel filter in the standard box. i also fitted a pair of extractors later on down the track and i would recomend all 3 mods. 2 1/4 is a perfect size for a vl especially as a daily.

anyway man the best advice i can give you after being there and doing that and busting my gut on doing everything myself / on the cheap / second hand is pay someone to give it a once over, fresh afm / coil, leads, plugs, cas... it will run like a dream and save you time hassle and money down the track. i did that with my vlt i have now and wich i had done it when i was using my n/a vlc as a daily.

---------- Post added 12-08-10 at 11:08 ----------

edit - on another note if you click on the link under my DP that says s1 vlc marinello / asteroid theres a lot to learn from reading through. 7 pages of photos and crap about an na vl daily!

cheers guys. thanks for all the comments.

i've got a 2.5 exhaust and extraxtors lined up for it and i fitted the tailights they look great! only down side is it makes the garnish look like sh!t even after i polished the crap out of it. so a new stripe kit from ebay will be bought too lol as well as the rare spares garnish badge on its way to brisbane as we speak. very excited. its coming along nicely.

bought some kitten no. 2 today as well. didn't get a chance to buff it up though. too busy with fuel pump issues on the old mans vr ute. tomorrow hopefully as well as new pics. stay tuned

got another friggin problem with the beast. bloody stupid thing.

serviced the auto on thursday. changed the filter and put correct amount of oil in. ran thru all the gears and then took it for a drive around the block. wouldn't come out of first. got home when it was warm checked in neutral topped up a tiny bit. right on the hot mark. went round the block again and still same problem.

won't come out of first til like 5500rpm and it really smashes into second and lurches forward. same as third. floor it to 5500 and it will hesitate for ages then smash into 3rd. few people have mentioned torque converter might have gone others have mentioned valve bodies could be pinched.

anyone come across this on a simple friggin fluid change and filter. wish i just left it alone!!

hang on a sec. i think i'm gravy. found this just then......

the transmission changes gears dependent on the vacuum from your intake manifold, via hoses and piped.

check your vacuum lines, i had the same issue on my vk, i replaced the hoses from the tranny to the carby, but sustitute for efi engine.

id say your vaccum lines are off or cracked, it dosent take much for it not to work properly, change the hoses, even if you think there fine, if there soft and tight they should be fine though.

might of knocked one off checkin the dip stick
