just turn aircon off when doing 8500rpm so the aircon clutch disengages

i'm always thrashing it, hence no aircon, lol

for me

couple of degrees cooler motor > couple of degrees cooler cab

that's what it boils (pun) down to

Thread Is Now About Airconditioning

im going to try go with the aircon, i think it will actualy be cheaper (since its still in the car and gassed) to try keep it. and if i have heating issues etc then i wont bother.

originaly wasnt going to remove the manifold and turbo, but i cant get to the bolts at the back of the compressor and i'm thinking it might be easier if i remove the manifold etc for some work room, then remove the ps pump (because ill probably want to re-use it) and then remove the aircon.

can any1 link me to any good info on getting new power steering pumps and alternators? would rather chuck in new stuff as i have a bit of a ps fluid leak (think it might just be the res but ill get everything new) and also some information on getting a bigger alternator, since ill most likely be using a thermo fan+aircon thermo+having the battery in the boot i think a big battery+big alternator+big lowguage cables are the way to go.

looks like if everything goes to plan come april 2010 i will be the proud owner of both a fun vlct and a considerable debt, im sick of ****ing around and will be going the loan and filling lees pockets with bank money haha.

the hi mount setup i have has a 2inch screamer, so the car is going to be pretty loud on boost, as far as off boost im thinking ill chat to lee and see if he can make me an exhaust that dumps down at the back to keep my car clean, but also doesnt shake peoples letterboxes as i go past, any suggestions on how to make it a bit quieter for cruising in? im thinking the custom "steel pipe and weight reduction" spec cat converter might not be the best thing for going unnoticed.

just go 3" system with a resonator and centre muffler if you want, that will make it quiet enough. 45 degree dump tips are like 20 bucks so you have no dramas there

i was originaly going to ring jim berry and have him make me up one of his clutch/flywheel kits, but whilst at his shop lee offered me a better price for a twin plate "direct (brand)" clutch+flywheel package. i am happy to stick with lee's knowlage, but i just wonder everyone seems to be getting good results with jims clutches. has any1 used these clutches? lee quoted me for one that is not a solid centre (because i want to be able to drive comfortably on the street).

i think, if they are available, i will also be in the market for a new ps pump (have to get a new res made, and a new alternator, are there new options available? that are decent quality? preferably an alternator that charges more, as i will be running the battery in the boot.

i cant decide what option im going to save for next, once this all goes thru with lee. im thinking maybe drag wheels+slicks and a good security system, can any1 recomend me a good company for a decent security system? (and a rough price on those gps tracker kits and mobile pager kits)

you wont have any drama's with the battery in the boot... mine has an underdriven balencer on it so everything, altenator, ps etc spins slower so it doesnt work as well as a normal vlt plus im powering x2 044 fuel pumps and a 600hp intank pump and i have no dramas with any of it. and its all standard vl stuff.

chinese coolers are fine, i have one on my vl and its well into the 10's now, and will be going quicker soon too.

any 3inch exhaust will be fine.

i wouldnt buy slicks etc untill you are ready to race it. because if you take your time which will always happen they'll sit around and go ****. id spend it on getting it going first.

Updation!

well the motor is coming in from over east, containing amoung other things some rods that go both up, and down. and some pistons that resemble circle pieces of metal.

basicaly a forged bottom end, ready to handle the kind of power i want to chuck at it.

finished disconecting everything bar the essentials for lifiting the motor out, i have not only run out of time, but run into a logistics issue with getting the motor out, my driveway is on a slant, and not just on a slant but a series of slants that change every few metres, making sorting it all out near impossible.

i have elected to annoy lee and make him lift the thing out, im sure he can do it alot quicker than me and he has the correct tools. ill get him to whack it on a pallet and away we'll go with the old motor. everything is disconnected except for the gearbox crossmember and a couple of plugs in it and the engine mounts. i elected to take the turbo+manifold off for ****s and gigs too.

the story now, in pictures!:

yes whole new motor is going in.

i have done my budget to allow for me to NOT have to sell any of the existing driveline, the old single spinner rear end will be joining the motor+gearbox to sit for a while, more than likely i will rent out some storage or something. want to keep the original driveline to have all the matching numbers just in case.

just going to park the motor/box and leave a bit of oil in it, try and go turn it once a month or there abouts.

so no, will not be selling the old motor+box.

update:

recieved motor at sanders racing, motor was followed by delivery of the car. dropped a bootload of gear off, pretty funny to see countless shifts and extra shifts to collect all the parts i have massed into a pile in the back of my brothers station wagon.

basicaly here is a diagram (to scale :P) of my garage: it has two flat sections only just as long as my car, and one uphill section in between, then there is also a big uphill section of drive to the road.

the car went right at the back where i did all the work, there is a steal beam in the garage that would have been great for doing all of this, but unfortunatly there was no way the car could go back far enough, and coming in the other way nose first would have had the car pointing down nose first at about 20 degrees, all a big mess realy.

the flat sections of drive are long enough for a car, but not long enough for a car+an engine crane. so i elected for lee to do the honors of ripping out the stock motor for me.

feel lonely without it, hanging for a drive, 4months.... 4 long months of loan repayments haha.

well, i have changed my mind on keeping the motor.

so here is the thread
http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showth...93#post2340093

car is coming along quite quickly now, all looking very good at this point in time. head is on the motor, so is the plenum, battery tray is out, everything is getting slowly hooked up

looks like it will be another 1-2 months before its done

Great work Jack. Its coming along nicely. Its funny how you're at the beginning of what should be a long and happy relationship with your VL and I am finding that if I get a decent offer on my VL, then it will be sold and my 15 year relationship with owning VL's will be over.

I have sort of indulged in thinking of just owning one car for a little while before starting something new in the near future.

Your car is looking awesome mate.

went and had a look at the clutch lee organised, the big beasty twin plate direct clutch looks pretty cool.

pretty much having dreams about this every night, ranging from racing ferraris and winning by heaps (deliusonal, i know) and nightmares where im driving around and its not very fast at all, but the breaks dont work, and the whole car is made of plastic and im about to crash.
just want it home so i can rest easy!

id be ok loosing to a ferrari as long as my calais isnt made of plastic. seriously, last night i was dreaming i had no breaks but it was really slow, and i hit the side of some random golf club and my intercooler broke off and a tried to put it back on, but instead of an intercooler it really was just the top of a vaccum cleaner (like the plastic bit with the black hairy stuff on them).

im not making this up either...

As long as there are no corners....should win.

Can't really compare "potential 10-11sec" cars to a supercar that does 11-12's (depending on model).

If it's a race on the freeway.....which would be highly illegal...a race to 300km/h (and that supercar could do well over 300km/h) you may struggle

Looking forward to see the end of this build.

It's been a tough road for you, wanting to sell the car, but you've made the right decision now!

goodluck

Just go with one car for a little while, then go out and buy a late model and begin a new project. I have been associated with vl's for 15 years and absolutely love the cars and love how relatively cheap and fast they can be. But maybe a change is in the air.

I haven't advertised my car online or put up adverts anywhere, or even put for sale stickers on the car purely on the undesirables who would pester me. Im happy to keep if the people who I have made aware of it being for sale don't buy. I have a couple of people who are in two minds at the moment.

Also, just referring to my comment of relatively cheap. Where can you buy someone elses money pit for around the 20k mark and go and do a safe and reliable 10sec, whilst enjoying air con and 11lts/100kms fuel economy and be comfortable enough to put 4 or 5 people in it.

Building your own vl up is enjoyable and satisfying, but the end result is what we all want. And that is a fast, reliable car with the least amount of hassles. I have had my fun with vl's and if a sale of the vl eventuates, then the new owner will have many years of fun and performance. But if nobody finds the funds to buy it, then I will happily keep it garaged and drive it once or twice a week and keep enjoying.

ok, another small update, i have recieved everything, bought everything i need (apart from a vs brake booster should get one soon though), and am giving it all to lee to let him finish it.

finnaly got the radiator from robbert, its not the best, he advertised it as having no filler cap... forgot to mention it also has no inlet or outlet? the welds look very sketchy, like they are big strong welds, but they are all mishapen and ugly. im not even sure how good the tanks are, or if they will leak, time will tell though, be taking the shroud off and having a good look 2moro.

thats all for now, maybe be another month or so till it's ready.
