i dont think the N/A RB30E 5spd is the same as a RB20DET, for starters the clutches used for the RB20 are smaller then the rb30...

just my 2 cents

bloke when i ordered the clutch for my rb20 it wouldn't fit on my flywheel, he said i have different fly wheel and to go buy an rb30 na as it will bolt up to that, it all fit's and bolts up!

VLRB20DET i only ever say stuff that i have done or seen been done! gearboxes are supposedly nearly identical! either way it will bolt up!

RB20 5 spds will shatter to pieces before an RB25 one will. RB25 5spds are same used in GTRS minus the transfer case for 4WD. Hense rb25 box is way more expensive then rb20 box.

disturbed i know that the rb20 and rb25 gearbox arn't the same, i was talking about the RB30e and RB20det are nearly identical!

As u stated, they are normally used for the RB26 conversion and also for the RB30ET when MX7 can't be found!

I supposed what ever works for the person on the conversion counts. I just trying to let them know my experiences!

mate thats fine i was only sayin what i know and that is the clutch and flywheel between a Rb20DET is smaller than what is required for a RB30!
I would think the gear ratio's between the rb20 5spd and the rb30 would not be the same, as for strength i dont think either are much good cos I blew 5 RB30 box's when i had my old N/A RB30 a few years back and this RB20 box i am running is on the way out, time for a RB25 box or a MX-7

just read the first page, all bolts up, u just have to change the harmlic balancer across to the vl one so the bilts are correct!

heaps of post's about this

u can pic up second hand ones all the time for around $200-$300 or get it rebuilt for around $800

Its all so much work lol. I seem to remember a place where u dropped off ur vl and $5k and when u came and got it, it had an rb20det in it . They used to adverstise in unique cars i think? i just dont have the mechanical expertise (or an engine lifter!) to perform the swap....

what are ppls thoughts?

its easy

i knew nothing about cars, and i hired an engine hoist, took the old one out and dropped in a rb20det, then came the wiring which took maybe 8 hours in total since i had no idea, and the wiring harness i originally had was cut...

then the fmic which i think was the hardest, just getting the piping nicely put in place and kinda hidden..

i think it was a great fun first project

hey, just wondering about power steering on a conversion already done and running (not by me). basically there is no unit in at the moment so which one fits? rb30 non turbo, turbo or rb20? is there much stuffing around? also can you help with info on converting the rear drums to discs (on a budget)? can you get units from the local wrecker to bolt up? and you say 13psi is ok for a stock motor and turbo (low k's) or best to wait for an intercooler? thanks for any of your help as im new to this whole VL turbo bizzness..

im running 14psi with my big FMIC,as for running it without one the car will be bloody slow to drive and seriously if you cant afford some sort of intercooler then why do the conversion .. and yeah just use a rb30 powersteering unit. The rb20 unit will not work

For some ppl who wanted to know last month I raced my car over the 1/8th(200m)mile , NOT 1/4(400m)

I pulled off a 10.134@63.38MPH with 3"exhaust, CAI, and 14psi
also the car has 4.11 gears and a minispool

I will be goin out this weekend again to see if I can better it with the headlight removed and 20 deg of timing

I would imagine that it' would be a very similar process needed to fit a RB25DET. Am I right? Would be nice to know.

there is a shop that sells the wiring diagram for around $150 to convert the rb20 of to the rb30 loom, that would be your cheapest option, and u will learn about your wiring!
