well i picked up the status's today... believe it or not they are chrome! theyt are so filthy and neglected that they look like the above. the grit on the inside of the rims was rougher than my sandpaper! anyway i have spent the day rubbing them back with 360 / 600 / 1200 wet and dry. inside and outside.

hey philby,

as you can tell from reading through it will all be returnable and io already have a stash of parts people are asking to buy but i am keeping for future resto.

today i put the big fella up on stands and pulled out the rear shocks / springs / panhard and all associated parts. took about 3 hours including tidying up the shed and sussing out why the soundsystem in the vy wasn't working. also it took me a while to figure outhow to get to the top strut bolts.

everything unbolted really easy which stunned me as i am pretty sure the previous owner didn't touch anything under there. suspension rubbers look pretty good but certainly aged. they haven't completely perished yet though.

s/l springs go in tommorow assuming i can get some rubbers for the springs. (hello repco?) and then the next step will be the front suspension (have a set lined up to buy) and the boost gauge / some new 4" speakers tucked into the dash.

catch people!

sl's, shockers and panhard are in!

tonight i also hooked up the boost gauge and while i was at it decided to have a crack at the instrument cluster lighting. so i pulled that apart thinking that was how you get to the bulbs but then learned you can access them from behind (duh)

so while the cluster was apart i stripped it down and cleaned it all up as it had accumulated a lot of dust backing up the history of this car as a farmers car.

with the cluster all cleaned up and the gauge in i decided i couldn't put it back together with the dash supports being brown from dust! so i gave it a quick swoosh and one thing led to another. the dash is now in a million bits half out of the car and i will give it all a thorough clean aswell as the supports and a quick sus of the wiring loom before it all goes back in.

do it once do it right starts to become a big job!!!! (haven't broken anything yet thank god.)

as the dash comes apart the mystery deepens. it is evident that the passenger side speaker and the dash cluster have been removed before due to a few missing / loose screws... and the suspension rubers in the rear while not nolathane... aren't to bad either.

strange a car that has had some maintenance ended up in such a poor state of affairs.

its suprising the amount of people that say they want a wagon when they see it.

small changes since last update,

removed and in storage -
muddies and roof racks.

still in progress -
wheels / calipers / master cylinder.

Rego is coming up for springnats meaning that the car has been on the road almost a year! pretty broke atm so i will concentrate on a detail and fitting up the reconditioned brakes / cylinder / new discs and paying reg for the next little while.

undecided whether i should enter some driving events at springnats?

wheels finished
calipers finished

engine oil changed + filter @ 237,8**km
diff fluid and main seal changed same as above

purchased -
king s/l front springs
monroe gt front shock inserts (multi use, will suit SL)
rear discs new solid (standard)

springnats is looking like a good one with my car all ready for its birthday!

btw: awaiting the 1" master which is being rebuilt before being sent to JDC for all of the above purchases and rebuild fitted aswell as a steering rack and a general roady which will sort out a mystery front passenger susp knock.

diff details -

part number: 92029315
28 spline s/w OPEN CENTRE
gears - 3:45

all the new goodies from repco-

nasty old diff fluid! -

making a gasket shaped spacer to reduce the width of my exhaust (make it quieter for springnats.) its made from a pretty thin sheet of alluminium from bunnings. seems to work great. i reduced the size to 2 1/4" which is standard.

i will have some more pics soon but i have confirmed the car is going in on monday coming to JD Customs again in mornington. i have a whole list for jmie and his crew to look at,

Fit -
f + r discs
f rebuilt calipers
f shocks and springs

flush - brake fluid

r/w check with particular attention to front susp and steering
advise on whether or not to fit reco steering rack

still awaiting the master cylinder to get back to me. the piston was seized so i sent it to the shepparton brak expert to rebuild. story goes that the rebuild kits that are recomended actually have a main seal which is slightly too small and as a result he has had people coming back to him complaining of brake fluid all over their engine by. so a new seal is on the way which will solve the problem but that just means i will hve to replace the master myself at a later time by the sounds.

all of the above work was completed and in addition -

front tie rod ends
ball joints
lots of other front end bits and pieces
wheel alignment

stoked with the difference in handling although now dissapointed that the sil doesn't sit flush with the road (back sits up high) but such is owning a wagon.

picked the car up on sat (31st) and did a run from mornington all the way down to safety beach and up into arthur's seat. car went great and absolutely loved the twisties! can't wait to get into the next suspension braking and steering stage!

pics!

saturday - standard springs and nolathane strut tops fitted.

found out i have a pretty serious power steering leak. JDC didn't pick this up when i asked them specifically to look at it so its a fair assumption that this was probably as a result of the lowered suspension being the last straw in an old rack.

monday - defect cleared.

oon the cards - super lows back in / p/s rack changed / wheel alignment at the front

oh and sorry no 4WD pictures as i have no camera at the moment and internet access is limited to maccas / sister's computer.

not much to report. i have been out and about a little but nothing big.

today the p/s rack has been changed and the car is getting the front end aligned which involves dropping the struts as the camber was out of whack.

this year i have so far lost a vlt hubcap, a ve centrecap for steelies, and now a momo status centrecap.

if anyone can help me get some of the above lkost parts please contact me however.

on a sidenote i have decided i am off to london after i graduate mid year. july the 5th the ticket is held for and i am putting some $$ down tommorow on airfare etc. so with that in mind plans to race at vlt nats and an intercooler + other stuff have been put on hold. when i get back in the new year i will drag it back down to my shed at home and see start up again. until then keep an eye out for it. my dad applied for a job with shannons and may be using the vlt to tow the shannon's trailer to car shows around the bendigo / shepp regions and beyond. if he does i will get him to keep updates in this thread and get some photos up.

thanks fellas - Mitch

well the cars off of the road again for some more DIY. (who'd have thunk it?)

this time the tailshaft was vibrating so it has been dropped out and left with a mate for some new uni's and a new centre bearing and a lick of paint.

in the meantime the car is up on ramps not moving so i thjought i'd get off of my bum in the last remaining warm days and pressure wash the undercarriage. heres the result. -

thios was all good but then winter hit melbourne and its a bit cold to get under there and hit it again with more degreaser and scrubbing brushes while laying in a puddle of murky water. SO i decided to hand scrub it with warm water in preperation for some paint and underbody deadener while the tailshaft was out.
heres the result after a hand scrub -

after a thorough wipe down with fuel (in place of wax and grease remover i have run out of) i sprayed on some of this new 3M line underbody deadener from supersteep auto and with one coat heres the result -

i plan on one or 2 more coats and then a gloss black finish over the top before replacing the tailshaft.

also, WTF? it appears someone has damaged my rear passenger side shocker... this may be the cause of an occasional "ting ting ting" noise in the rear end.

2 more questions before i bugger off. did i mention these?? 15x8.5" all round.

also recieved 3 new vlt hubbies in the mail today.

finally, wtf is this? found it mounted with 3 screws on the passenger side of my tranny tunnel not far back from the output of the gearbox. it is a black rubber thing with 2 plugs (presumably positive and negative power) and 2 wires leading out but they have been sliced off? what is its purpose!! is it standard? just plain wtf?

turns out it may be an aftermarket cruise control sensor. there were some magnets on the tailshaft and they are used to sense the speed the car is going. which is strange as there was no evidence of this in the car. no holes in the dash and no mystery wires but eh. such are old cars.

---------- Post added 18-04-10 at 20:21 ----------

2 coats of deadener / 2 coats of killrust gloss black.
