My VL Berlina Turbo build...because no one on SC cares

Seeing as we’re in the dying weeks of this second rebuild I thought I’d show everyone my VL – nothing too long and boring though, just some quick shots.

We got the car from a lady my Dad worked with when I was 15/16. I’d always wanted a VL and this one seemed alright so we grabbed it. It was as entry-level and stock as they came – NA six, auto, pop-top sunroof and a drum brake diff. this is how it stayed for two years or so. We did small mods, like a top half respray and rust removal and an exhaust system because the original one had huge holes in it from rust! It was a true P-plater spec VL with big subs and stuff, but I loved it.

The real work started late in 2006. I bought a disc brake diff and a manual conversion and fitted both up at work. I borrowed a mate’s 18s and lowered the car a bit, and then we fitted up the big brakes – PBR 330mm discs and twin pots on the front and standard sized units on the rear. The car rolled around like that for a while.

During 2007 a cheap RB30ET motor came up for sale so we snapped that up. I bought an MX7 as well, and both were dropped in with the help of Jack and Justin. While it didn’t look like we were going to make it, the car was finished in time for Cruise for Charity 4 in 2007.

At the same time as the driveline was overhauled, the white interior (terrible, terrible times) was replaced with a Berlina spec Cerulean interior. The white and blue combo was how the car came, and to have it back this way brought back a lot of memories.

The SOHC phase wrapped up with the car looking like this:

The set up was only basic and consisted of a T3/T4 high flow turbo, a Plazmaman intercooler piping kit and eBay intercooler and a 3in exhaust. We teed up with Maatouks Racing who kindly dynoed the car and the set up made 230rwhp. Getting the c*nt flogged out of it meant that the turbo started to leak a little bit of oil though, and before things got too bad we ripped the motor out and tore the car down for this rebuild.

Said flogging at a driver training day:

The car was stripped the day after I got my new wheels – XHP Jet Blacks in 19in. To this day the tyres have barely seen 100km on the road: the stickers are still on them! I digress though, and just before Christmas in 2007 the car was in pieces and delivered to Richard who smoothed and sprayed the bay for me.

The bay:

At the same time we picked up the new motor – an RB25 out of an R33 Skyline. We picked the car up before New Years completed and dropped it to Justin’s farm, 40mins from home. The engine went to Jack’s shed.

This was the worst thing we could have done. I didn’t see the car so I didn’t care about it, and I got bored with it and bought a minitruck. When I saw the car at the beginning of last month it was the first time I’d seen it all year! Of late though we’ve gotten stuck into it to, and will hopefully finish it by Cruise for Charity 5 on July 26th.

A month ago we brought the RB25 to my place where we’ve done a bit of work to it, including removing the gh3y high mount manifold and standard intake manifold, strapping on the KKR480 turbo and painting it up all pretty-like.

The car was brought up to Sydney and dropped to 2SUS Custom Repsrays, where Bassa did a simply stunning job. The car was turned around in two weeks, is arrow straight and perfect.

Bas didn’t just paint the car for us. He straightened it out and removed all the little dents and dings that have accumulated over the car’s 20 year life span. All four doors were replaced with Calais items, the aerial was shaved, the rear screen was removed and rust repaired, the boot lid was replaced and the gay-as-AIDS pop-top sunroof was thrown away. The car was resprayed silver over MX Grey.

This is how the car sits now:

We’ve fitted the front and rear bumpers up, and are slowly piecing the doors back together and reassembling the car before we drop the motor in this weekend.

As you can see we’ve changed the trim once again. The Cerulean trim is gone, and we picked up a complete red Calais interior to go with the silver panels. When it’s all said and done it’s going to have the big red brakes, the red pinstripe around the top of the moulds and bars, red walls and a few Sydney-spec stickers down the doors and on the screen…in red of course.

I’ll keep you guys updated with how we go during the week and hopefully have a finished product in a fortnight or so. Hope you enjoy!

I thought this had a RB25? Or do you have 2 VLs?
It does and it doesn't. It has an RB25 set aside for it.

Pfft, two VLs. What am I, made of money?!?

Brutal, and straight to the point. It'll be back together soon - a lot will come from this weekend

I thought that to for a moment lol, but he updated it so it says he's got the RB25

It's come a long way already, paints come up awesome. So what have you done about the hole in the roof? You putting a electric sunroof in?

Red calais interiors FTW! But only if it's S2 trim

Yeah man, getting an electric sunroof made up to suit the hole. The pop-top was alright but it leaked everywhere, so I was glad to see the back of it

It'll go alright, but I'm hoping it's not much of a sleeper!

Just the MX7. We've got a HKS twin plate to go in with it, so when we snap the MX7 we'll drop an R33 bocker in

Just worried about how brutal the twin plate will be on it. Powerwise the car will be kept quite streetable for the moment, but when I get over that we'll step it up

Wanted something a bit different, and I think this colour combo is underappreciated. I love the colour, I think it's really clean and shows off the lines of the VL perfectly. Plus, the silver duco and red trim combo is phat

That's the difference between something being underapprciated and totally original. I've done so little today it's not funny and am about to go home, smash bourbons and put my car back together - will take a lot more than a picture of some prime LDM (which I just so happen to appreciate) to ruin my day

Yeah man getting a Hollandia electric sunroof made up to suit the hole in the roof currently - saves chopping into the roof more and possibly damaging the paint
