My VH Project [HDT-253]

It's been a while since I've made any posts, so I'd thought I'd share my project.

The Car is a 1981 VH Commodore. I previously got the car when I was on my L's and had dropped the engine into it, and licensed. It's been about 7 Years now, and I've gotten the car off my parents (been sitting in there back yard for 3 years) and started rebuilding it.

So, Boring stuff out the way, car specs time.

Engine:
I had the engine rebuild about 6 years ago, I've done maybe around 10,000 since it was rebuilt (was only doing short amount of driving back then).
Red 308 from a VB SL/E
60 thou, flat top pistons
Yella-Terra Heads
Rochester 650 Carb.
Turbo 350 Transmission
2.5" Exhaust
15" Mag Rims

I've stripped the interior out of the car, wiring, about to remove the engine, and then get the rust removed. I have another VH which has good interior and wiring, but the body has more rust then body (and seems to be just as much bog) so I'm going to be taking what I can from it, then disposing of the body.

I'm still deciding on a color. Currently it is a dark blue.

The car is going to just be a cruiser, the only stereo in the car will be what ever note the engine makes. But that may all change once the car is finished.

The car has been sitting for 4 years. So the 1st thing I tried when I got the car was start it. Little bit of fresh fuel, and check on the oil, make sure there is water, a new battery, and perfect. Still starts fine

Enough dribble, here are pics. Before the work started

Unfortunately, there has been a bit of rain, so now its under a tarp, and waiting for the rain to stop for at least a day.

Progress update:

Front and Rear windows are out. Only cracked the front windscreen -- lucky I gotta spare, but this was the better one.

Boot, tail-lights, interior lining also out. Found a few more rust collections when the windows came out, so far all rust spot are fine on the doner car.

More pics to come when the rain stops, again. All I can do till pay day, so i can buy something to remove the doors (including WD40), and buy an engine stand. Not broke, just have a wife & mortgage.

Progress update:

Engine and transmission removed last night. Was the only time it stopped raining so we took a dive and did it. Now I just need to go up town and get the right bolts to put it on the engine stand...

OK, Its been awhile since I updated this (26-07-08, 09:33 to be exact) but here we go.

Scored an SL/E rolling shell mid '09, and scrapped the blue body. In the end, there was alot of rust. Feel bad cheating on the project, but I couldn't go past the SL/E.

Towed it all the way from Perth and Back behind the ol' trusty WB Ute.
Had an engine and gearbox ready to to drop in, so went to work one weekend.

And now how it sits

Still some work before I get it licensed. The muffler needs replacing, brake line, fuel line also need replacing. Then its just a tune up and should be road worthy.

More pics and vids to follow as progress comes to a complete.

Battery in the boot is a future plan, but not a priority. I actually like these rims. I had 17" AMG Quakes which I kept of my last car but they just didn't suite this so I'm sticking to 15's. Suite the age of the car, and rubber is cheaper. I'm not planning on winning any prizes, I just want a nice cruiser, and occasional motorplex dragster when I visit perth.

I will be giving it a new coat of gloss black after its licensed. Few stone-chips and trolly dents from over time.

Car is finished. Now have a permit to drive it to the mechanics to give it the final checkover/tuneup.

If everything goes well, it should be licensed by Wednesday

Been a few months and a few $$$ more, but it's finally licensed...

I only put the plates on Monday and the weathers been pretty shocking, and its dark when I get home... will try and get some pics of the finished products on the weekend.

Nothing feels better than driving a car you rebuilt up with the help of friends and family

Still like my white rims, but may look at something else when they have less tread. I'm broke until then.

Despite what the plates say, it's not a HDT nor 253, they were just the plates I had from my first car (which the drive train came out of for this car).
