"call to dob in a hoon"

Quote:

A 17-YEAR-OLD was clocked travelling at more than double the speed limit last night as police revealed they are setting up a hotline to dob in hoons.

The Altona teenager was caught speeding between 110km/h and 120km/h in a 50km zone along the esplanade in the bayside suburb of Williamstown, about 7.15pm last night.

It was the second time the youth had his car impounded in the space of three weeks.

Police will run the new hotline - a spin-off from the Crime Stoppers program - in a new crackdown on rogue drivers.

The $250,000 taxpayer-funded hotline will deal exclusively with complaints about dangerous drivers and wild road behaviour.

Police yesterday urged people to rid the roads of irresponsible drivers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Have your say below: will the hotline be effective?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"We are after you and we want to see you stopped," Crime Stoppers chief Peter Sprott warned.

"Be prepared because the community wants you stopped and the only ones out there that think hoon driving is a good idea is you."

More than 4120 cars have been impounded since three-strike anti-hoon legislation was introduced in July 2006.

There have already been 718 first-offence impoundments this year in which an offender's car was seized for 48 hours.
Another 150 vehicles have been impounded for up to three months this year after drivers committed a second hoon offence.

And three of the state's worst hoons, charged with three offences in as many years, are before courts fighting police attempts to seize their vehicles permanently.

Among them is Bendigo man Brendan O'Brien, who was this week jailed for three months after pleading guilty in Bendigo Magistrates' Court to 10 dangerous driving charges.

A magistrate will decide next month whether his car will be confiscated forever.

Reporting of hoon-related activities has spiked since the introduction of the laws.

Crime Stoppers on average receives about 370 calls about dangerous driving a month 12 per cent of all calls.

"We already receive a large volume of calls on hoons and dangerous drivers and that is without canvassing the issue specifically," Mr Sprott said.

"We expect, and we are bracing for, a significant increase when the hotline opens."

Police Minister Bob Cameron said the hotline provided another way for people to stamp out rogue driving.

"The community is sick of people driving recklessly. Now people will be able to report hoon behaviour in their local area and help police prevent it," he said.

Last year Bendigo was the worst area for hoon car seizures with 90 cars impounded, followed by Mildura (44), Geelong (43) and Shepparton (41).

Frankston, where 35 cars were seized last year, was one of several councils to initiate a local dob-in-a-hoon hotline.

Assistant Commissioner (traffic) Ken Lay said the hotline would allow police to tackle specific problem areas.

"It will give police more intelligence on the areas where hoon behaviour is happening and allow us to focus our resources there," he said.

"We want to know where it's happening so we can get these fools off the road."
LOL. what a dumb c.unt to do those speeds in Williamstown. We all KNOW the cops are hot on that area

Yeah its been in casey for years. My mate got posted a note pad and a pencil from the council to write down rego's LOL. Good old circle drive...

I dont think youve got too much to worry about with the hotline.. not like theyre going to come and book you if someone rings up. Maybe if heaps of people reported you doing the same thing and you were stupid enough to admit it.

Why don't we all sit out side police stations for an hour, write down all the car's number plates that come out (Off duty cops, on duty, marked vehicles ect) and call the hotline complaining about them hooning?

Not that any of us have the patience for that.

Thats the reason why I cant see them being able to charge you based upon a member of the community ringing up with your details. What if someone dislikes you and keeps ringing?

they can charge you when someone dobs u in for a ciggie butt thrown out the window ($220)
so, mayb they can fine you based on a dob in too.

But, that'd be pretty ****ed.

Surely it couldn't stand up in court if someone just 'dobbed' you in? They'd have to have some kind of evidence, some proof of an act that occurred? I reckon if I got charged with someone because of a phone call I'd be challenging it straight away.

pft no they can't. I had one of those sent to me in the mail. I've never smoked a cigarette in my life and yet they tried to fine me for throwing a cigarette butt out the window.

I signed a stat dec saying that it wasn't true and got a response about 2 weeks later from them saying that they were dropping the matter.

Wankers.

I love it how the worst offending areas are country towns, with nothing to do but bang your sister and drive like a tool.

If you want to get someone in trouble, ring the EPA and complain. That actually costs you money to disprove a charge. This hotline will be epic fail.

thats true..i know a guy that got done a week ago for the ciggie out the window..pretty lame if you ask me...dont people have better things to do with their time?

it wouldnt suprise me if they fined you if someone "dobed" you in...how childish

just proves that the cops cant do their job..they need other people to do it for them

that's not very nice. i get in to my mates sisters.

There are a few reasons why country towns are disproportionately high;
Easier to hear where it is coming from, and less traffic.
Disproportionate amount of police in some small towns.
Everyone knows where you live, who you are, and what you drive
