PERTH Zoo has announced the birth of a rare Rothschild's Giraffe calf - the first born at the zoo in seven years.

The four-day-old female calf made her official debut today sticking close to her mother, Misha.

Perth Zoo chief executive officer Susan Hunt said Misha gave birth to the healthy calf on December 24 after a 14-month-long pregnancy.

The yet-to-be-named calf weighed about 55kg and was 1.75 metres tall at birth.

The youngster spent the first few days of her life bonding with her mother in their night quarters before venturing into their exhibit in Perth Zoo’s African Savannah.

“This is a very exciting birth as it marks the recommencement of the Zoo’s giraffe breeding program,” Ms Hunt said.

“This is the fifth calf for Misha who is an excellent mother and is the first calf sired by the zoo’s new breeding male, four-year-old Armani, who arrived in Perth from Melbourne in 2005.”

Armani took on the tall task of new sire, replacing the former breeding male Anthony who sired five calves at Perth Zoo before heading east for a well deserved retirement.

Ms Hunt said Armani was chosen as a genetically suitable male as part of the Australasian breeding program for giraffes.

Environment Minister David Templeman said Perth Zoo was an important part of the giraffe breeding program.

“Since 1995, the Zoo has successfully bred six Rothschild’s Giraffes, which is one of the most threatened giraffe subspecies, with only a few hundred found in Kenya and Uganda," he said.

“I am immensely proud of the success of this breeding program and I congratulate the wonderful staff at Perth Zoo – and of course Misha and Armani – on this exciting birth.”

Perth Zoo keepers are very pleased with the calf’s progress and say she is suckling well. The other female giraffe, Marama and Shahni (another of Misha’s offspring), as well as father Armani have also been watching over the youngest member of their group.

There will be a naming competition for the calf with details to be announced shortly.

All five giraffe are on display in their exhibit at Perth Zoo’s African Savannah.

Lol thanks man, i'm gonna give it my all next time...That was 3rd gear on the spot at first, which it was fine with as it had a bit of water down. On the actual pad it would hold 2nd on the spot but then as soon as you got it moving it would start to die.. that's why you can hear me knock it back to first every time i hooped it around lol. I'd never driven the car before so i had no idea how it would react, i can't believe how sticky it is out there!
