[MAD-3.0L] Red and silver Calais Turbo

This is my 1988 Model VL SL that i purchased back in 2002..

History about the car:
I am the second owner since 1988 and have owned the car for over 5 years now..
Bought the car with 380,000kms on it.. orignal motor gearbox and diff..
i have now done over 410,000kms now and its still using the original diff and motor..

No oil leaks and doesnt use water.. why replace it ..... that diff tho haha!

I bought it as a SL 5 speed with 12 months rego on it for $1500 but it was in terrible shape! The suspension was as old as the car and every single rubber and bearing was either degraded or totally stuffed!..

So first thing first was to replace everything..
- Replaced every rubber with nolathane rubber.
- New Pedders Comfort Gas shocks front and rear
- New ball joints
- New front wheel bearings
- Upgraded Brock front swaybar 25mm and rear 20mm
- Rear is standard except with nolathane rubber
- King spring ultralows for the front
- Pedders Non-IRS VR/VS springs for the rear (sit that little bit lower then the lowest VL springs from pedders)
- Replaced master cylinder with a 1 inch VLt cylinder disc disc ocnversion..

Seeing the car now actually handled a little better (despite being to soft suspension wise and too low) i looked onto upgrading the drum rear..

With the 1inch master cylinder (disc-disc) the brakes were actually worse with the drum rear end..

I sourced a set of rear calais calipers and rotors which i swapped over in about a day (What a pain in in the a55 that was) and now it brakes like it should..

I also sourced a set of VLT calipers and rotors.. which also helped with the braking department.. Later to date i had purchased a set of RDA slotted rotors and the good old EBC Greenstuf brake pads which work wonders!

Now that i had the suspension and brakes organised i looked into making the car look a little nicer by purchasign a whole new front bar side moulds and rear bar which i had smoothed off for somthing different (took me hours and hours to do)... still got to do that rear bar

I also sourced a set of calais side skirts of the forum and i smoothed them off and got rif of the slight divet along the skirt..

With the front bar i had the vertical supports cut out to give the front bar a more if a smooth look..

Removing the three grooves in the side moulds was a time consuming job and like i said previously i still have to get round to that rear bar hehe

Primed and painted pretty silver

Also sourced a Brock letterbox style GRP A SS grille and a set of new headlights and indicators and put a pwetty shiny holden badge smack bang in the middle of the SL front (there was a dint in it lol)..

The car started to look that little bit nicer..
Replaced the rear tailights with Walkinshaw / VK Berlina tailights and calais boot mould.. (mind you which i had to plastic weld and bog up so you couldnt notice that the previous owner decided to drill the boot strip into his boot )

After having a little bump with a 4WD i decided to go with the calais front from FIBREMASTER which didnt fit at all nicely so i had to once again spend a few hours getting it to sit right.

P.S who loves Chasers not really me lol

Exhaust had fallen off so i decided to go a redback 2.5" system cat back and upgraded to an XF TB and VN 3 inch piping..
Was quite and had an excellent note.. but still lacked the power..
Had the car dynoed at this stage and made a measly 88.0rwkws
Still not bad for a 400,000kms old motor..

Happy to where the car was at, at this time i decided to save up or a set of rims.. VY SS (flower style lol) rims were purchased for a cheap $500 with rubber..

Once the rubber had worn away i couldnt decide on which rims would suit the car..

Had a few ideas floating around my head (well not much brain in there) including FR19s

Decided to go out and buy a new set of rims.. Being a big/massive fan of the plain looking style of the VZ series 4 Monaro rims i purchased a set and got the tyres whitewalled..

I soon got bored with the factory stereo head unit and the 2.5" exhaust was getting a little annoying.. so i decide to fit a nice stereo consisting of two 12s and a head unit of some sort.. dont really care what it was but it sounds good.. DEH 7700 unit with audiobahn subs or somthing i think..

As predicted i got sick of the pathetic 88rwkws and decided to buy a turbo setup consisting of the following:

- Complete Hybrid cooler kit with custom made cooler pipes to suit the top mounted turbo

- Decided on a Monsta cheapo manifold and a GT3540 turbo with a .70 front compressor housing and a .82 REAR exhaust housing for a streetable ride..
- That in conjunction with a Turbosmart 38mm Pro Street External Wastegate with a 2inch screamer pipe that annoys the **** out of me and other motorists

P.S Car is still only running the standard VLT injectors and engine management and NA Fuel pump/fuel reg..

Sufficient for a measly 186rwkws/249bhp on only 8psi
Didnt want to push it as its and old motor and its still 9.0:1 CR and no decompression plate is used..

This setup makes for a driveable street setup as full boost by 2700rpm isnt too shabby...

Future upgrades are:
- Retirmmed VN calais interior Tan leather mixed with red door trims etc
- Bosch 044 Fuel pump
- Microtech or EMS aftermarket engine management
- Polished Forward facing NA plenum DUZ360
- Upgraded VT slotted rotors and calipers
- Rebuilt bottom end with CP pistons 8.5:1 CR
- Crow stage 2 VLT spec cam
- Bosch 036s injectors
- New 28 spline LSD diff
- Replace the rb20t box with the r33 turbo 5 speed box
- Brass button clutch

Here are some more picstures...

A BIG thanks to the following:

- Vlt_dreamer for some of the chrome strips and calais parts
- Sabo_vlct for the window tint (legend )
- My bro in Law for helpign me with basically everything
- My twin bro for doing the stereo
- My parents for puting up with the loud noises my car now makes (they want me to sell it)
- Shane Casey at Carline mufflers in COWRA, NSW for all the tiresome work you have done on my car with the 3inch exhaust and turbo gear

A big NO THANKS to the following:
- The cop who booked me for my handbrake having more then 6 clicks and no water in my washer bottle
- The poof that reveresed into my car and drove off
- ****ty Monsta Ebay turbo ****
- the RAAF for sending me to VIC

Thanks for looking at this article.. thats if you read this far hehe
