So Russ you are telling us he is going to wash this car and bring it back out. Imo the photos I remember that paints going to need some work to bring it up anywhere near nice.

Yes the taxis and police ordered vehicles came with a larger alternator for increased electrical loading.

You will find the bulk of yellow BT1 pack cars from vic are in fact ex RTA/vicroads cars. The yellow cars in Vic Police were for highway/country duties, or TOG.

Same fit outs from what I understand. Dads one when in service had the CB, a maglite holder on the side of the console, a didital equiped speedo that sensed traffic in front of the vehicle when it was later in its service life. Roof lights changed to the magenta color in 1989/90 from memory, had mudflaps as well. All the rest was the usual std BT1 equipment.

In fact its service plate was MWE 400 back then and I believe the car is still around. It was sold with documentation as the last VL BT1 in government service.

Also these service tags fitted to the visors, the vehicles were maintained at Vicroads own internal workshop and were filled in by the mechanics. I know for a fact the vicroads ones were not serviced by Holden themselves.

Somewhere I do. I have to go through a mass of old photos to find them! He had them right through to the last of the VS V8's.

Back then RTA and RTC were in the process of becoming vic roads.
Both cars were owned by RTA and i only just found out they had road traffic authority down the side with amber lights? pics anyone??

BTW i'm pretty sure the service maintenance label on the sunvisor is there for cars that were being serviced by a holden dealer cos RTA cars were serviced at vic roads corp and the techs would know what items to check.

Yeah they had a chequered stripe right down the side of the car that when in RTA form was from memory a red/white chequer with an RTA emblem on the front door.

When they switched to Vicroads the stripes changed to a green/white with a vicroads lettering on the front door and the bonnet. When dads one was nearing the end of its life the stripes came off it and it basically had a big vicroads magnet sign on the front door.

They went away froma red and blue light like the police to the magenta lights that are still current in use today.

The service schedule was on dads car as I remember seeing it on the visor. His car was maintained at the old Vicroads/RTA workshops at Carlton. The only time it went back to holden was when it cracked a head.

The way they did it back then has changed to the way they do it now with government cars. Back then the govt owned each vehicle hence they did there own servicing or had a deal with a dealership. Nowdays all the vehicles are leased on a plan and as part of that they have to be dealer serviced to keep their warranty so they can be then on sold with a full service history.

Meh, I might go start my own Calais zomg thread. From what I can tell there is less factory LW5 plated calais floating around than original unmodified BT1's, actually BT1's in general.

There is a couple of pics somewhere of dads old BT1 in the background of other phots. I just have to find them. And cause the olds are divorced I dont know who has them.

But basically change the color of the light bar and swap the police stickers for vicroads ones with a narrow stripe down the side and thats what it looked like!

Both, I stated that above. The bulk of the yellow cars were RTA back then and this carried through to VN-VP. But country police stations and those considered as highway patrols were the ones that definately had the yellow cars. The police went away from the yellow marked cars as people would confuse the 2 and at that time it was easier to keep all the RTA/Vicroads cars yellow as in total numbers there were far less vehicles to worry about.

You will find the bulk of Vic police BT1's were white esp later in the VL series.

Actually that pic you posted with the cops standing in it. That looks like the old HWP uniform to me as normal police had a different jacket and pant combination!

So basically the hype regarding BT1's is just that, hype?
If most of the BT1's were driven/used by some gutty Wog that worked for the R.T.A back in the day's, why does everyone get so excited?

mainly just wankfactor for all the muzza's out there, apart from the few OG ones still left, and the only reason theres hype over them is that its so hard to find one that hasnt been thrashed like a piece of flesh in a brothel...lol

LOL.........You should see what my brother used to do in that government vehicle. We lived on a big hill back then so if he had to move cars when dad wasnt home it used to cop a good Roll Back or 4!

In reality the BT1 hype is just that....Hype. They have there place as an ex cop car. Its the same hype people have about XY GT's, people like them for there own reasons!

So how could you tell if your BT1 is a former Police car, or a former R.T.A hack?

Steve, this is great, you're making white NSW BT1's sound more desireable than any Vict BT1's incl the yellow ones

after all NSW cars had much more of a fit-out than Vict cars and Vict VL's never had radar
