my new 97 Calais SII supercharged 3.8

Hey guys...the names Adz. Had an account here for a while but never posted...since i just bought my first car i thought it was time to join the calaisturbo.com community.

shes a black 1997 VS calais series II supercharged v6. got her from concept motors in south melbourne. shes bone stock and was owned by an older couple. the only reason they traded the car in was because they had a baby and needed a new car. they looked after her very well and she is still in original condition...180000ks on the clock and runs beautifully.

car cost me $9000 flat including stamp duty, transfer fees, rego til june08, full roadworthy (had about $400 work done, new brakes...other minor crap) and a 3 year warranty covering the engine, diff and something else i forgot for $4000 each provided i get the car serviced by a certified mechanic and make sure the books get stamped.

ive wanted a calais series II for a LOOOOOONG time and i got really lucky with this one. i live in the south eastern suburbs and no local car yard has had a vs calais...and any local private sellers cars werent so great. this one popped up about 2 weeks ago and i jumped on it straight away. sent an enquiry through carpoint or carsales and i got a call back within 30 minutes. then arranged to have a look at the car. i sure as hell wasnt going to drive into south melbourne for a car that could be a dud...but the guy offered to drive her to my house. anyway long story short...checked her out...took her for a drive...very happy. put down a deposit and signed some papers and 9 days later (today) the guy delivered the car to my house...all ready to go.

anyways...im starting to ramble...so heres some pics...some were taken with my phone before i took her for a spin and the rest with a digital camera once i brought her home and got her settled in. but ive compressed all the pics to the same size just to make it easier...plus stupid photobucket dont allow photos larger than 1024x768 or watever...

anyways...heres the snaps...

rear boot open
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z.../mybeast17.jpg

for now the only mods im planning to do are:

a pioneer 7950ub headunit
vt calais badges on the rear doors
replace orange side indicators with altezza style clear indicators
remove the spoiler

future plans are:

19" B-Boss Eleanor wheels
full VS SS bodykit repsrayed silver to match the rest of the lower body
lowered suspension
upgrade the sound system...replace front and rear speakers and get a 12" sub...i dont know much about car audio so i will probably be coming here for help from some you guys.
light engine mods...probably new exhaust and extractors

thats probably about it.

i do have one problem though. since i dont have a headunit yet...and i cannot cruise without pumping my house music...i was happy about the calais having a 10 disc cd stacker. i opened up the boot to check it out...and i noticed the stacker didnt look how i thought it should look...

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...dgystacker.jpg

i opened the sliding lid of the stacker and saw that. now im not 100% in-the-know when it comes to car audio products...but something tells me that there should be something else in there...one: because i dont think i should be able to see all the internals...and two: there is no way a cd can be played in there as it is...

my question is...is there something missing there? a tray or something...that you know...helps it to work lol. i probably should have checked it before the guy from the dealership left...stupidity on my part...but he was so confident about how the car is in perfect condition that i just assumed the stacker was all good. ill give him a call probably next week to ask about that...and also about the one missing mud guard for the right rear wheel...so yeah.

you guys know anything about what id need to do to get that stacker working? where would i go to get the missing part or a replacement if i need one? and will the pioneer 7950ub head unit be compatible with the stacker once i get it fixed? since i wont always have my ipod so 10 full mp3 discs will be a life saver...

anyways...let me know what you think of my new beast. i appreciate any comments/hint/tips etc that you guys can offer...and ill also appreciate any info someone can give me about my stacker problem.

cheers fellas...adz

ah finally this gets posted up. didnt think it would take a month but oh well. well obviously some things have changed in the month since ive had this car.

first of all ignore the whole stacker issue in the first post. the previous owners said the stacker cartridge was in the car when they traded it in...so some idiot has messed around with it at the dealership...dunno what for...was he detailing the stacker internals? i dunno. the dealer i bought the car off has already helped me out with some other missing things (security codes, missing mudguard etc) so he said hed try work something out for my stacker...coz they sold me a car with a nice feature of 8 speaker stereo and 10 disc stacker...and i cant even play cds...so...ofcourse the dealer doesnt need to know ive bought a new headunit...i still want a functioning stacker (i know it wont work with a new heaudnit).

anyways like the first post says the early plans were the pioneer headunit, calais badges and clear side indicators...

bought a pioneer 7950ub...not yet installed

calais badges have been slapped on

post office stuffed up big time with my money order that was meant for the clear indicators...sent another on wednesday so should have the clear indicators by next week.

what else...ive had a little trouble with my radiator. came back from a cruise one day to find the overflow pipe pissing out rusty brown water...kinda wondering why dealership wouldnt flush it and top it with coolant...but its not a roadworthy issue so...i guess they wont do anything they dont need to do. so im working on getting the radiator flushed. the seal on the radiator cap was all corroded so i got a new one slapped on...and probably monday ill be getting an additive put in to kind of clean up the radiator and pipes...break up some of the rust and gunk in there...drive it for about a week with that stuff in it then get it completely flushed and filled with the correct coolant. should be sweet after that.

apart from that the cars been great. i did have my first 'accident' the other day though. reversing into my carport...it was raining...windows covered in water...little harder to see...got too close to the last pole...put a thin 5inch scratch right on the rear left corner of the car. its not a big one..can barely notice coz its kind of parallel with the bumper lines LOL...its taken the paint off though...im shattered coz the whole car is in such great condition and i just ruined that oh well...gives me an excuse to get all the other little scratches fixed up.

anyways this post is getting quite big so...ill put up a few more pics and thats it for now.

mine and the old lady's car
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...thebeasts3.jpg

new headunit
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z...4/headunit.jpg

badges slapped on
http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z.../mybeast30.jpg

once the clear indicators arrive...ill wash the car and slap them on...take the towbar off...try to get the mudguards off without resorting to taking off the wheels (cant seem to find a screwdriver small enough to get in there...prob get something off the mechanic doing my radiator flush) and then take some more pics. hopefully with the badges, clear indicators, no mudguards and no towbar shell look a bit 'tuffer' and less grampa spec.

also can anyone recommend a good pro audio installer in melbourne? i want my headunit done properly (for warranty sake) and i want the usb cable run somewhere hidden...like in the centre...so yeah.

next step is probably to get the spoiler off (or get another spoilerless black vs bootlid), get a sub and lower it, coz it would look better lowered on calais wheels than a 4WD on 19s. im thinking superlows in the front and ultralows in the back. im gonna have to do something about the camber once its lowered too wont i?

anyways...thats my ride. it is my first car and im just a young fella so im looking forward to the experience of getting the car the way i want...hopefully without too many setbacks. and im sure i can come here for all sorts of hints/tips and help...even some parts etc. alright so...check her out guys...let me know what you think. i got a feeling i may become known around here for large posts...LOL.

alright cheerse fellas.

thanks mate. yeah hopefully by the end of this year/early next year shell be on her arse. rims will come later. i figure it would look better dumped on the calais wheels than sitting high with 19's. im trying to do things in a certain way so that every modification looks good on its own and doesnt actually look like a half-done project. like i wouldnt go out and get a set of 19s when its stock height and im not gonna get a ss kit until i got rims...you know what i mean?

once its lowered and the spoiler is off itll look great, so that would be part 1 of my plan.

then with the 19s and a vs ss kit itll look twice as good...thats part 2. etc etc.

IMO thats the best way to go about it.

yeah yeah this guy knows what im talking about...hiii fiiive

and nah wasnt planning on getting the SS spoiler...just the front, rear, side skirts...i hate spoilers on holdens. all the oldies seem to like it...pfft...what do they know lol.

nice calais too mate. not really a fan of the S1 (or is that a VR?), used to like em...then i fell for the SII, but the SS kit sets it off nice. combines the classy two tone of the calais with the tuff body of the SS...you cant go wrong...if only mine was a 5.0L...but oh well. the L67 eats enough fuel as it is.

cheers mate.

it was actually a VR, yer i much rather the s2 as well, long story short that car above only cost me $1500 and it was immac, shift kit, exhaust extractors, superlows compressed, full alpine system 2 x 12's amp splits. 6 x 9's, mp3 player etc, lol if i had gone out to buy one it would have been s2 and not white thats for sure haha!
got a pic with the 19s on it here but **** quality off my fone.

those 19s look heaps better than the VYs...for a VR not bad especially for $1500...cant say anything bad about $1500.

i absolutely love my VS SII though

got my clear indicators today...slapped them on...i like em. the colour of the car is more even now if you know what i mean. black over silver...silver badges...clear indicators...practically only two colours. no random orange or anything...looks way better. i havnt washed her yet but i was so impressed with the clear indicators i took her out to get some better quality snaps...cant even tell how dirty the car is in the pics...unless u look close at the bonnet and boot etc...still comes up mint IMO.

so next on the agenda is the radiator flush...then the headunit will go in. then i gotta save up some cash to get her sitting low...and one way or another get rid of that damn spoiler...that will keep me happy for a while.

anyways...heres the pics.

tiny update....FIIINALLLLYYY got my headunit installed. very happy with it. pioneer 7950ub...great unit. looks really sleek, nice colour display and great sound. got some good bass out of the stock speakers after having a play around with the settings.

i also had the USB cable run hidden into the centre compartment between the seats...wasnt sure how that would turn out but very happy with that too. no more CDs for me.

got it done at VIP Car Audio on cheltenham road in dandenong. didnt take too long and only cost me $100...cant say anything bad about that. so ill definitely be going back there when i decide to upgrade the rest of the sound system.

heres a couple of snaps.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z.../headunit1.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z.../headunit3.jpg

so yeah...thats all for now. id definitely recommend VIP Car Audio to anyone looking for a bit of a sound system update...did a good job.

next on the agenda is lowering this baby and getting that faaarkin ugly spoiler off.

I say get rid of that spoiler, slam it, leave it on the stock calais wheels, and get a nice fmic. Will look nice, clean, respectable, with a fair bit of power. I've always had a soft spot for VS Calais Super 6's.

yeah ill be a happy camper once she loses the spoiler and gets dumped on the calais wheels...they're tuff for stockers. but then after that ill want my rims and the ss kit. i just really want it lowered...it looks like a FWD. probably do it after my 19th in a month...ill have some cash

i meant 4WD not FWD...damn the spelling of the number four starting with the letter F and using 4 in the abbreviation because those damn front wheelers took the F...lol...and why dont they let us edit these posts?

oh and i dont think youll be seeing a cooler on my calais for a long time, if ever. im not really interested in boosting it up, atleast not to the point where ill need a cooler. ill only ever do basic stuff...like air filter, new exhaust + extractors. one reason is because i dont know all that much about it...and i dont really care about having the quickest vs in noble...id rather spend the money on making it look nice. so yeahhh...
