I recently purchased a VL S200 with a bolt on garrett turbo and no other mods. Im gonna have a bout $10,000+ to spend on the car and i just want some opinions on gearboxes, diffs and engine mods, cheers.

have a read through the tech threads here. your question is really too broad.

however heres what id do -

rebuild brakes suspension and diff
get everything working and original

boom 10g gone.

alternately if it was all mechanical i'd do a fresh engine rebuild and an r33 5 speed. then a t4 with 10psi ish

Choose what you want from the car and go from there. 10k basically says to me, you have enough for a cam and springs - standard bottom end, a cooler, exhaust, computer and a fuel system. The rest I'd spend on the gearbox and diff.

id had this same talk with a customer last year.

Stock 180wkw vlt convert and 10g to spend.

i first told him to sell car, put it with the 10g and he could buy a really nice fast one already..but no he wanted to do up this one..

I told him to go buy a diff and a really good box first and then do motor next..

he said..well then ill get bored of it. I told him if he wanted to be a teenager with a broken down car getting towed all the time we can do that.
(and he was 50yrs old..)

We did that, turbo/computer /headgasket/headstuds/ cam springs/tune etc.

Trans slipped on dyno as soon as it got to 210rwkw..he complained for all the money he spent he only got 20rwkw more, and it was laggier..lol

Trans blew 2 weeks after on rd , then diff. He hardly ever drove it for 6 +months as he had to do whole driveline..

then made 270rwkw then 300rwkw..

Who would have thought..

offcourse i was a **** after all that..lol

you can lead a horse to water but .....lmao
cheers

coming from the trade as well Jet R31 has the best advice so far I reckon.

For $20k you could buy quite a nice VL with quite a bit of work done already and just get in it and enjoy it.

$10k isn't going to get you a lot to be honest.

As above, sell it and buy something done mate.

In the grand scheme of things 10k isn't a lot, and wont get far. A set of wheels and springs can be half of that, and then you might want to spend money tidying a few things up or on the motor.

Depends how far you want to go mate. Id say morgz has it spot on.
Do a compression test first to make sure the motors still healthy

PRO TIP: Decide your goal for power/money and buy all the parts ONCE to suit that setup

Mines a hicomp t3 hi flow with a cam, upgraded fuel and ecu. 315hp and expected to do low-mid 12's. Good little setup... on boost by like 2300 revs

-Hi comp, stage 2 cam ARP studs and a cometic gasket $800 parts
-Turbo, gate, manifold, dump pipe $1000 if its stock t3 hi flow or $2000+ for custom
-R33 box and good clutch. Up to $2000 if you need manual conversion
-VL turbo diff, $1000
-044 pump, surge tank, 550 injectors and new rail $1000 once you buy all your fittings
-Microtec installed and tuned $2000
-Cooler and piping, 3 inch exhaust, brakes, suspensions, reco'd cooling system?? Another 1000-2000

Thats 10k there. Can be done

You are trippin...$550 for a cam, Be $800 with springs, nearly $400 for headstuds and $250 for headgasket... So thats $1450..not 800.

Even if you get a regrind its still way over, then the rest of your list will do same..until its miles over...

On top of that, get head faced..and check it over while it off..face ex manis, face intake mani

Then on your list your missing $2g of gaskets/ hose and general miscellaneous
items that will randomnly pop up..

Vl are the biggest buckets of ****..you can guarantee the car will have electrical faults..a ****ed loom and every rubber hose in engine will be ****ed..steering rack will piss out
fluid if power steer..every ****ing power steer hose will be leaking like a mofo aswell

And if person can't do labour well there 4 grand more without me thinking to hard..

So what are we at ..16g+...

And i hope the thread starters 10g you have is not a loan...please dont get a loan to spend on a ****box..that will cost 2- 3 times that amount to make nice...and reliable..

Ive just spent 25G on parts for my berlina, its not finished ..theres no labour...theres lots of secondhand **** on it(diff/tailshaft/rear suspension/ex mani/iwastegate) intake mani/computer etc or cheap **** (turbo) and its nothing special, standard interior..standard exterior..standard brakes and i paid $1000 for it.. i could blow 40G on it without looking if i painted it and it still woudnt be anything great..
cheers
darren

This man speaks the truth. That list would blow way out. Things are going to break, need replacing, and no doubt need re-doing. And if you're on a budget then this could be a problem

Yeah mate been a while since i did it all.. rough numbers. Mine was a just a wade regrind so no $550 cam. Head studs are on ebay for $300. Should have said a total of $1000.
Ive done it slowly over the years so i guess you miss some of the smaller costs but they add up.

Just parts not labour, ive done it all myself or had mates to help me with the more technical stuff.
Although microtec is including labour for 2000 suply fit and tune.

Im getting my diff re re done after i did it once to not do it again until i managed to crack a tooth on the crown wheel... 3.9s and a locker going in
