I used a hair dryer the first time but when I tried to get the unwrinkled part to wrinkle I didn't. I'll give it another coat at put the hair dryer on it for 30 mins.

I have painted so many rocker covers and engine covers with VHT wrinkle plus and it has come out perfect every time, yet friends of mine do it and it's patchy? :s I get every last scerick of paint off by applying a thick layer of paint stripper, let it go for at least a half an hour then gurney it all off. Then once it's completely dry, thoroughly clean the surface with prepsol and then apply the paint EXACTLY how the instructions on the label say..

i have some of those halogen lights on stands. they provide enough heat to bake the covers however bake the exposed side quicker than the other.

Awesome covers. Just a tip. It's all in the prep so don't rush
. Use the appropriate primer and the paint will expire b4 it ever peels off. Dry it properly No wet prepsol/wax greas remover should dry by itsel or to fast/slow. Use gloves if u can cant touch pepped items.
Spray along the length of the cover (starting off the the item in a strate continues sweeping motion. Overlaps may vary. Paint will b soft untill it's back on the car and been for a drive.
and pains peels from the edges so don't skimp on cracks n corners
Hope this helps.

Did my rocker cover a couple weeks back using this guide. Alot of people seem to be getting cracks or patchy areas, if you apply just 3 coats and correctly dry it you can't go wrong.

I used a hairdryer for a good half hour then left it like this for 2 days haha

Still gotta sand down the holden but

I didn't, and don't think you need to anyway. I've done two, plus my rb26 covers and they turned out mint

ITS ALIVE

just did this, looks like it will turn out sweet second time round. (stuffed it badly the first time)

its all in the preparation. strip and clean the cover thoroughly. use plenty of wax n grease remover with a clean rag and wipe straight off with separate clean rag.

oh, no primer needed. follow these instructions and the ones on the paint can and you cant go wrong.

peace.

I wouldn't even bother with the wrinkle paint, the finish doesn't last long, it holds the dirt and oil and goes dirty too quick.
You never seem to see chromed covers on these, even gloss black would look good on these with chromed fuel rail.

I bought some about 6 months ago to re-do mine, SP204 is the correct code, exact same paint colour inside the can, the lid just looks darker.

Thanks for such a great thread Antho.

My first attempt came up good but had a run, so I did it again.
The second one come up superb (pictured below).

I had to do yet again due to scratching it.
Below is what the third and fourth attempts have turned out like.

The wrinkle has not happened much and is very patchy.

The only things that I can say is that I have done different this time is:
using a drill with wire brush attachment more this time than in the first and second attempts.
(Antho said this will scratch the aluminum).

And the other is chucking the cover in a wash at the mechanics to strip some of the paint.
However I did use paint stripper again and cleaned/ dried before painting.

Im so close to just starting fresh with a new cover.
Any advice in why it is turning out patchy?
Cheers in advance.

You need to do light even coats thats the key

It is very difficult to get 100% perfect but shouldn't be too hard to get a good looking job

Maybe practice your coats on some scrap material first to see how the wrinkles turn out with the amount of coats etc

How many coats are you doing? Like Antho said, light coats, but layer it up. Are you hitting it with a heat gun to dry it?

Four coats with heat gun in between.
Thanks for the replies.
Much appreciated.
Most likely will try again with some free time.

Try it without using the heat gun between coats. I've done a few that look mint, and only hit it with heat at the very end.

**Update **

After letting this sit for a couple of days, it appeared better but not as good as the first/second attempts.

I am thinking of stripping again and leaving bare.

It's hit and miss these things! I just done 2!
1- I did 4 pretty thick coats and then hair drier 10 minutes and couple hours in front if heater, came up pretty mint and fairly wrinkly!
2- I did 3-5 kinda medium coats, no heat from gun or heater, came up pretty good too, a lot less wrinkly then the first one!
Dunno which I like better lol

I think you're never going to get it perfect with this kind of paint, but as long as you don't have major runs or wrinkles and it looks mostly even then it makes the engine bay look fresh and tidy
