throttle question

Hey everyone got a bit of a problem, Ive have just recently noticed that when I just touch the throttle (in drive) it all most dies like a flat spot then as soon as i add more pressure it goes fine. Its real small and the car hasnt actually died on me but it sort of feels like its going to but then goes good. its only a real small spot like im talking a few mm. my guess is something to do with TPS?? anyone had this problem. also today was at tafe and went to lunch and when i got to the shops one of the guys that was following me said my car was blowing alittle bit of black smoke when i was cruising (light throttle) do you think could maybe be related ??

Sounds like you're on the ball mate, It could be staying in open loop hence the black smoke (Fuel Rich), could also be AFM set really lean/rich, so i would check/adjust your TPS, check your AFM (2 Volts is good, 1.2V is stock which is lean but ok), also check your timing, these few things should get you sorted.

Mine does it when on the cold start (Rich) so you could just be a bit Rich, but you never know.

Is your car auto or manual? The TPS does not operate in a manual (ie: it does not affect the running of the car plugged in or not).

5speed i beg to differ, all VL's come fitted with them Auto or Manual for a reason (mine being a factory 5 speed), it is to do with the way the car operates at idle, regardless of the box its driving.

If i unplug mine the idle becomes rougher and lower as if the engine is struggling to get fuel.

Its a known fact all Injected engines need them, have a read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throttle_position_sensor

Since you were so quick to laugh at something i said that was wrong, i would assume you would know everything about VL's

No need, its just a switch, its the black thing on your throttle body opposite side to the throttle cable.

Look up how to adjust it on here, but if its only cold that isnt your problem.

If you consider it a problem it would be your AFM being out of whack (possibly rich side) and by the time cold start richens the mixture further its noticable, try adjusting the AFM to about 1.8V from Pins 1 and 6 (peel the rubber seal back on the connector) and see if that helps.

well since i had this problem my car started to idle really bad like it was doing when I would apply light throttle, but now it was all the time at idle. so today I fixed my leaking exhaust manifold and manifold flange just down from the manifold coz they both were leaking really bad. replaced my air filter coz mine was black and also replaced the AFM with another one that was taken out of a running car. I checked what it was set at and it was at 3.5V so i adjusted it back to 1.8V and it seems to be idling quite nicely now and drives good to. but time will tell i suppose. hopefully its fixed. after doing the exhaust and filter it still didn't idle very well, but after doing the AFM it seems really good

Yeah that sounds about right, 3.5V would be excessively rich, good to hear its running better mate.
