We finally made it to world time attack 2011. What a huge effort from everyone involved just to get the car there, let alone run almost exactly to our plan of not missing any sessions and just being faster by the end of the weekend.

Pre Event Shenanigans

The long haul to Sydney begun late Tuesday night with the car and tools tightly packed into the new enclosed trailer and Amberís brownies safely stored in the front seat with us. The Navara towed the trailer well with only a few wobbles when passing B doubles.

Rolling into the accommodation at 11am Wednesday morning we were ready for some well earned rest and had time to kill before the Eastern Creek was opened to unload. Arriving at the track we were very happy to find some local faces in the RevZone boys with their Evo7 and R33 GTR we had met at the Winton test sessions leading up to the weekend.

To our pleasant surprise we were also sharing the pit garages with the very famous and very professional Pan Speed team!!! These guys certainly provided an unforgettable experience and as they operated effortlessly throughout the weekend. Many a thumbs up photos were taken next to the car.

Practice Day Ė Thursday

Having never been on the track at Eastern Creek raceway I had little idea as to what to expect, other than studying an Evo lap from YouTube in, over and over again.

The car ran amazingly and continued to improve during the day thanks to working on the tyre pressures. The first practice session started very well with the third lap on the track turning out to be the fastest for the weekend.

Pushing the boundaries of grip I came off the track 3 times over the day. Much to my panel beaters (also my old man) dismay this resulted in scraping the freshly painted splitter through the stones at the last turn and damaging the guard that had been replaced after a mishap at Winton test the Friday before. I would like to take this moment to apologist to my Dad, I know how long it took to make it look pretty again and yes I will clean the shed.

Review of the data logger showed AVO tuned the engine perfectly and I had run a 1m 47sec lap time with was my goal for the weekend. You would think with this achieved, we would pack it up and hit the pub for beers! Wrong!

Thursday afternoon and night saw a 2 hour road trip to obtain the new head set for the pit to car radio working again. The boys from Revolution Race Gear in Auburn were tired of hearing my name by Saturday morning, however they are brilliant to deal with and by midnight we were set for the first day of recorded racing.

Time for the serious stuff - Friday

With my suspension and race guru at the track after an overnight road trip from Melbourne we were ready to hit the track, under one condition; Angelo was to wait at the pit garage door and advise of when any promotional models were within sight, resulting in very subtle tools down and no talking moment.

After a few slight adjustments in the suspension the car was feeling great and I had gained some much needed confidence it was agreed we push harder to better my current lap times. However the Toyo tyres I had been punishing throughout the previous 5 test session had a half fast lap in them before they let me know that 800rwhp is just too much for the 275 tyres.

Some deliberation and advice from George, the very lucky man who gets to drive the Revzone Evo7 it was decided the fastest time would come from the Saturday morning session. It was decided the last session for Friday would be far more useful for experience on the track.

After running the last session non-stop I was faced with a red flag at turn 2, which means off the track at turn 4. After just running 4 flying laps and coming out of turn 1 at 6000rpm in top gear, it was fair to say there was a little bit of heat coming from the heart of the beast.

Rolling back through the back of the pits in the usual style it was clear there was a little more than the standard smoke coming from the bay, with the suspicion the Garret fire proof turbo bag was on fire, again. That is right everyone, fire proof doesnít mean fire proof.

This is where the car to pit radio came in handy, with Dan immediately informed and the boys ready and waiting for me when I rolled in. With the bonnet lifted quickly there was a flame at least 300mm high off the turbo and before the marshals could create a mammoth clean up job with their extinguishers the team had the inferno extinguished in seconds.

It only took four hours, that is right four, for the turbo to stop glowing but it was still too hot to hold your hand on.

After determining the melted nylon braided hose which fed oil to a filter was the cause of the continuous fires, Head Mechanic, Jake got stuck into the repair. With new heat shield on its way a fear wafted through the pit garage that this would slow us getting on the track for what was our best chance at that fast time on Saturday morning.

In the eleventh hour luck turned around and my braided hose supplier, Luke from Missile Performance let us know he would be at the track at 9:00 am Saturday morning and asked if I needed anything. The order was placed, Luke was on his way arriving earlier than planned to help out and get the car ready for the first session.

Saturday morning started where Friday night finished, Jake under the car with Luke and I doing our best to pass tools and re-run oil lines for the turbo.

The suspension team, Laurie and Brian, had set pressures and put the two brand new Toyos on the front of the car ready to go.

With Liam from Street Commodores Magazine standing in awe Jake and Col from AVO had taken off to the stair case with two large hammers and a roughly cut piece of heat shield material to create one of the best fitting and looking turbo heat shields you could have found in the pit paddock.

After hectic running around and repairing what we thought was everything from the fire the night, it was time to suit up, get into the car and do what I was there for.

I was instructed to complete 2 quite laps to scrub the tyres in on the front and bring up the temperature slowly. After 2 laps the temperature of the tyres wasnít where it needed to be and as I entered turn one of the first flying laps I ran wide onto the grass. Thank fully missing everything and only damaging the grass, which I had now cut for the greens keeper.

Next time out of the last turn I had a great run onto the main straight and grabbed 4th gear a lot earlier than I had been able to do all weekend. Unfortunately that was as far as this session went with a large back fire off the boost cut. It is thought this caused the head to lift a little and pressurise the cooling system, meaning all the great purple ice from Royal Purple oils was now all over the track.

Thankfully I was going off line down the straight to get out of the way of the other cars and parked right out in the middle of nowhere on turn one. I had to wait for the session to end for the tow ride home.

Back in the pits a quick de brief involved attempting to fill the system only to find that the pressure had punched the welsh plug out the back of the head. Closer inspection revealed the front welsh plug was also gone. With Jake and Col furiously working to get the welsh plugs back in with the engine was still in the car, we missed the second session of the day by a mere 15 minutes.

The main goal over the weekend was to run all the sessions, and had been taken away from us by only 15 minutes. Whilst we didnít achieve our goal completely being able to operate with such efficiency and consistency was a testament to the team.

Attention quickly turned to the last session of the day. We were ready, early and I took the time to head to the pit roof to watch the pro class cars, including the amazing Pan Speed RX7 turn some laps and watch Tarzan Yamada complete the fastest run of the entire event.

Back into the pits, pumped, and ready to go we completed one fast warm up lap. Coming out of the final turn after having a great run again we hit the over boost cut again; it was clear we had melted the braided lines to the waste gate in the Friday afternoon fire.

Whilst waiting for the session to finish to be towed in I was lucky enough to watch from the turn 2 marshals box! Thanks guys.

With racing done for the day I pass on my congratulations to all the people responsible for putting the weekend on. From where I was standing all weekend, it ran flawlessly. Also congratulations to Tarzan Yamada, with what can only be described as an amazing lap of 1:28.851. A full second faster than the sports sedans lap record, and they do it on street legal tyres!

I canít thank my team enough. Lee, Jake and the guys at AVO for all their effort and late night to get the car to the test days, their race day mechanics, last minute fuelling and spares. Thanks guys.

Ej from Royal Purple Oils Australia, not only are you a great help by sending the best oil in the world to me, or your track side hospitality, but for putting a bit of faith in guy with an old commodore, I appreciate that.

Dave at Mr. Transmissions, we all love a good box. Dave is the only man that will get to look at the box in the VL.

All the usual suspects; Liam, Dan, Nico, Ange and Ellie for their support and help getting the car out there, running around after me, drinking my beer and getting parts to keep it all together.

The mates from home;

* Dan for his ability to withstand my rants and not unplugging the radio
* Des even though work prevented you from making it, the design of the shirts and stickers made it to the track and we looked pretty schmick.
* Mad Mick; the man deep behind the scene over the years patching the car up to keep it running.
* My old man for somehow managing to flare the guards with a large hammer while still making the car look like it should in a timeframe most would cringe at.
* Brian and Laurie; who somehow manage to give the impression not much is getting done while actually working minor miracles. Their focus was always on how to make me faster.

And to all the others out there that have helped even in a small way, from delivering a fuel pump after hours or helping strap me in on a test day. Thanks guys.

I learnt a lot about the track and format of racing on the weekend, having other cars on the track at the same time gives you a good indication of where youíre fast and where you need to be faster.

Over all Iím extremely happy with the way the team and car went on the weekend, and plans are in motion to make the car even faster next year.

Not even a week on from the event and work has already started on the car.

Some call it a sickness, we call it passion.

Just missed out on the goal I wanted. Last run I was off the line best ever but muffed third gear change. 1km from a standing start I think 19.9120 and top speed was 296.6kph. I wanted 300kph.

Next year

AS the end of the years fast approaches its probably a good time for a quick update on the car for those that arent following along on the face book page. The wide body project is now in full flight, the plugs are all complete as of this afternoon, the front moulds have lready been made by the team at Alfa Motorsport fiberglass. I believe I should see the front end panels before the end of the year, and the moulds for the rear completed very early January. With the hope that the rear panels and 4 doors can be delivered to me late January we will be moving the car back to the suspension shop for an adjustable height watts linkage and a re make of the front suspension to fit the new 18x12 rims. This should allow for a much lower ride height than we have been able to obtain so far, even with a taller tyre on the rear end. Some new aero will be added to the car early next year also. The real plan is to be logbooked as a sports sedan, and then focus on testing and entering the Super Lap event for 2012. After Super Lap we will be trying to turn our focus to the Island Magic late in the year at Phillip Island.
