fitting vr/vs front seats

Fitting VR/VS (and probably VN/VP too) seats to a VL

Tools needed:
5mm and 6mm Allen Keys
13mm ring spanner and socket/ratchet
Possibly other sizes on other model seats

I have done this twice now with VR seats without a problem. I’m not too sure how the floorpan is different in the VN/VP but I presume this would work the same with those seats, too.

Drivers Seat

As you can see in the picture, all you need to change is the rail on the inner side of the seat (left if you’re sitting on it). In this picture you can see the difference in the rails.

To change the rails, use an old VL S2 one, and bolt it on to the new seat.

To take them off you just have to slide the rail so that you can get to the 6mm allen keys or 13mm bolts (it differs with the seat model) and then undo them. You can do this the same way you would move the seat if it were in the car – just pull the bar and then slide the rail. The following picture shows one of the bolts, on the spare VL rails I used.

Note the blue line shows where you can put a screwdriver and push down on it, so you can slide the rail. This would be useful if you took the rail off a seat at a self-serve wreckers and didn’t get the bar used to slide it. Also, to take the bar off a complete seat, there are a couple of clips to hold it on, so make sure you take them off first – otherwise you can just pull it off the lugs.

Now the drivers seat will go straight in.

Passenger Seat

The passenger seat in the VL has a much smaller spacer/bracket bolted on to the inner side (right if you’re sitting on the seat) to clear the lump for the cat converter. The following pic has a side on view to show what I mean. In this pic the VL spacer/bracket doesn’t have a rail on it, as I re-used the VR one, but you can just take the whole bracket and rail assembly off the VL seat to make it easier.

To remove the bracket/spacer, unto the bar used to slide the seat, and then unbolt the backrest from that side of the seat. It uses a 5mm Allen key. Look at the blue in the pic below to see it apart (I forgot to take a pic of it together!). then, using a 13mm ring spanner, remove the spacer bolts.

Note that all these bolts are tight since they have loctite on them from the factory.

Now simply bolt it back together.

This is how mine turned out with VR calais seats:

great article.

I have already bolted VR exec seats in my VL and the passenger seat sits high on the inside. I didnt know why this was happening as I had swapped the inside rail. From what you have said i need to swap the spacer bracket the rail bolts too and this will fix it.

Is this correct?

i've never looked at vt/x/y seats but i believe the rails are entirely different. people make up their own brackets for these but i don't know that they'd be legal (if anyone ever checked).

if only i knew this about six months ago, i went to the jap importers and got a set of seats that hug your body like a glove but then i hadto make my own brackets, adapt the rails on the seat and everything, it took some time but worked out pretty good!

im not sure what the seats were out of, they just have them all set out on the floor at the importers so i just got the ones that suited me best.

Natho, Your right, to fit VT, VX or VY seats you need to make your own brackets to bolt the rails in, and its not legal.. didnt stop me bolting VY Calais (heated leather!! ) seats into my old VK... that was nice as!

I would if I could mate.. that VK was 2 cars ago now.. I had photo's of it on my PC, but due to stupid me not backing up photo's and stupid power surges killing my computer, there are no pictures...

I plan to put the same VY Calais Tan leather seats or perhaps some VY Senator Signature seats into to my VL as soon as possible... when its done there will be pics, and probably a tech article about fitting VT - VZ seats..

The VR/VS rear bench will fit, but it needs to be modded. You need to take out about 60mm from the width amongst other things.

Depends on what you are doing I guess, Im in the process of fitting a full VS Interior to a VK. Fried gave me the rundown on the rear seat and I sucessfully modded my rear VS seat to fit a VK. You need to narrow the whole rear seat by 60mm, move mounts, trim foam etc. PM me if you still keen to do.

Yeah, the SS one's look much better, but I wasn't prepeared to hack an SS Seat up first. Now I have got it sorted I will do a SS Rear Bench as well. As for pics you will have to wait until the car is ready.
