Rebuild.

Hey Guys,

I have finally found an Factory 1988 VLCT, with all the numbers matching. The car itself is in very good condition inside out, everything is original on it but the 3" exhaust all the way through, and the front mount cooler.

Now i have the car getting a full respray in the same factory colour, and all of the exterior redone as i am restoring it with no plans to ever sell the car.

The interior is also getting a whole re trim in the factory colour/style.

Now what i want to achieve from the engine is around 300 - 400rwkw, this car will mostly be a street car cruised once a while, and maybe do some runs down the 1/4mile..

Now considering their is so many of you guys on here that have gone down this path, and also know your vl's inside out, i would like to hear your opinions, of what i should do to the diff, transmission and engine.

As im planing to do it once and do it right since im keeping the car, i dont want a low budget build, im intrested in what i should do for the car to be able to get 300 - 400rwkw and handle it without headaches.

Thanks.

Motor - easy rebuild it with forged pistons ,h beam rods, acl bearings, arp rod bolts, mlsr headgasket, arp head studs, and cam to suit what tuner thinks for your combo
Custom plenam (rajab,jpc,cpc,jd customs,ect)
Xf throtle body
Front mount intercooler
Turbo gt3540
Computer - tuners choice heaps of types around
Fuel system-2x044 pumps with 770cc injectors or 1000cc plus for e85 fuel

Gearbox-300kw get a full house keas jatco
400kw-i would go powerglide or c4

Diff- can do a stock diff upgraded to 31spline with moser axles and full spool
Or a 9inch with same gear

Cp piston mate and as for ecu i use microtec never had a problem most people on here not big fans of microtec but the fastest single cam vl in the world runs microtec so that says not to bad to me

And i must say that even 300rwks on the street is a tyer fryer my old vl had 300 and just smashed tyers in all 3 gears 400 would be useless on street

Good luck re trimming the interior in factory material, that stuffs obsolete. Sometimes you can find people selling NOS peices of trim for alot of money.

As for the power you want to make, do a search on the forum. It has been covered many times.
Check the first thread in the vl turbo section, pretty sure it has in detail what you would require to build a engine making that power.

chasdm - The budget for the VL build is 64k left atm after the purchase of the car itself, like i said only reason im pouring in a fair bit of coin is because i have no intentions of ever selling the car. Hence i want to do it once and do it right, about 15k of that will be used on paint, 10k for interior, and rest for engine, drive train etc..

So now i just want to get a few ideas, from some of you guys, that have gone down this path already, and what your suggestions are.

Since your outlaying a fair bit into the car you have a lot of options-rb30 sohc, rb30det, LS1/2/3... Really comes down to what you prefer.

I was thinking of doing an rb26/30 build, or moving over to ls, but then decided to stick out on the rb30 itself, im just a vl fanatic in general, so i want to try keep it original as much as i can dont want to customize too much a prime example of what i want would be something like the blue vlct on this thread.. http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=107889

I just want to get opinions and ideas, on building a bullet proof engine/drivetrain to handle 300 - 400rwkw all day long.. so if a few you of you could do what madrex has done, would be great.

thanks

For 400kw why go something other than a single cam 30. Pretty easy power really. You have a decent budget so use quality parts (including ecu not a microtech) and you will have a car that makes an easy 400kw, is responsive and very streetable. Should easily have change from 40k too ifyou do it yourself.

Spoke to a guy down at SRE Engines (http://www.spencerraceengines.com), his doing a quote for me, for the full rebuild, with all the goodies, plus gt35/40, intercooler, motec ecu, custom plenam, custom manifold, etc, and also a built 2 speed glide to match, he said by monday he will have it ready for me, so ill upload the quote and see what you guys think.. If all is well, by mid week the engine can be started and should be about an 8 week turnover before its back with the new tranny.

Have no intention of starting anything so don't misunderstand me but are u serious?? Whole car rewired and brake upgrade for $5k
Diff if its auto full house borgy $2-2.5k
Gearbox full house c4 1000hp $5-6k
Rest is engine you'll have plenty money left over if you plan and think
In all honesty champ pick your favourite mechanic/shop DO NOT tell them how much you have to spend lol just tell them your objective and rwkw target you have get a detailed parts quote an go from there
Just my opinion
Best of luck with it.

300 to 400 RWkw on the road. Guess you don't need a lot of luck with a budget base of 64k but you will need luck on the road with all the ****heads about, so good luck. Might I add if your keeping it I assume your going to use it on the regular. Then i would assume you have budget another large sum of money for insurance over the life span of this magic vehicle.

Turismo, My license has been suspended for 18 months, so i ended up selling my other spare car, to fund the VLCT project whilst i cant drive. As for how often the car will be driven, im not even sure myself yet, probably wont be much, but knowing that i have it parked in the garage, and ready to go any time in the future, that's the main thing. After selling the last one, i felt very empty till i purchased the current one.

Just looking through a Street commodores magazine, and noticed towards the end of the magazine an advert for Kanaris engines, in Reservoir. They have some package thats been released for an RB30 that's guaranteed 400+rwkw, anyone know anything about it?

Save the heartache and book your car in with Maatouks.

The tow fee to Sydney will be peanuts and be an investment compared to all the other issues you're bound to have if someone else gets it wrong.

He can knock up a spastic reliable combo for you and have the car back to you in no time and not collecting dust sitting in someones workshop here (speaking from experience).
