JustJap has brandnew R33 gearbox's.

Recon its worth it to buy one brand new or get a used one and have it reconditioned?

Opinions?

How much is it?
Then weigh up the cost as compared to what it will cost to buy and reco a second hand one

Sorry forgot to put up the price.

There $2899

Say you can pick up a second for $1000
Overhall kit not including new syncros for round $500 and and $500 for labour.
Thats $2000 flat.

Add another $600 for all new syncros.
so $2600

But is it worth doing all this. Why not just buy a low k's box for $1500 and see how far it gets you.

Guess it all comes down to what your going to be doing with the box. (Street driven, Drag, Power skid warrior?)

You may have noticed, I am just trying to start some general convocation. haha

Anyways, something to think about.

those prices you listed for 33 boxes are getting towards the top end of what they are worth... with other makes and models of cars where the 33box isn't a straight bolt in moving towards the more modern 6 speeds etc, and the age of 33 boxes, the prices has fallen a bit. I wouldn't expect to pay more than 1k for a decent to good 33 box... times that by 3 and depending on your power you'd probably get just as much life as you would out of a brand spanker anyway if you're throwing decent power at it and shifting like a hektik c**t.

Factor in that could buy a crapped out 33 box for $100-$250 or maybe get lucky and get it even less... rebuilding one with a brand new, or aftermarket gear set, would run cheaper and probably give you more strength anyway.

For instance my 33 box cost me $1100 out of a 9X XXXkm 33 with some minor mods here in WA in about 2009 or 2010, Has lasted a few thousand kms of pure street abuse, droppings of seconds and thirds, 4 times at the drags that has broken other parts of my car twice, and two nights of pushing it around Wanaroo raceway. From the day the box went in it's made noise in 3rd and screamed in 4th, but still hasn't let go, or shown any signs of weakening. The only thing that flogged out was the nylon shifter bush that cost under $20 to fix... You don't hear of decent 33 boxes munching it all that often...

TLDR: Not worth it.

$2,899? LOL suck a ****!

As above, find a low-kay box and put good oil in it. If you're in a position where you're terminally damaging R33 boxes then you probably need to change your driving style, not pay twice the market worth for a gearbox...

All good points guys. And believe me I am in no postision to spend that much on a transmission, especially if it's a stock standard box. Plus I'm not gonna be chasing 10's.
You can buy a pretty decent auto for that much!
Plenty of box's around hopefully pick one up before Xmas.

2nd hand box and smurf blood is the go. In saying that, when thrashed 33 boxes once cost $2000, a $2900 box is good value.

Smurf bloods a sure fire way to be needing another one sooner than later.
Get a blown one send it to Mr Transmissions and get a PAR kit put in it, Problem solved
Probably cost a few bucks more but you wont break it in a hurry

Wow them PAR kits look good. But a little on the pricey side, but thats what you get when you go for a bullet proof setup.

http://www.par-engineering.com/Produ...gears et.aspx

And by some of them videos. Dropping 4th seems to be no problem at all, haha

Man, if money was no issue.

PAR gearset... mmmmmmm so good.

Some people will say they are rubbish though, it all depends on your expectations and how you treat the box.

Try drift sales on Fb. You've got it good over east! Plenty of people smashing skylines and selling wrecks. WA....yeah we still get them but not as often and there dearer I've found. I've seen them cheap cheap over there...a few almost cheap enough to make me wish I was back there... Till I remember how welcoming the cops are in relation to modified cars.....

I'm on the final MX for mine... Once this goes bang I'm converting to a built r33 box.

On a different note......has a 6 speed behind an RB been done well by anyone yet? What's the go with ratios etc etc?

the 350Z motor is $1500 new from USA + postage, Its 6speed and "slightly stronger" then R33, unsure whats involved to get them behind an RB but.

Im building a Vlt at the moment. Haven't driven it past second gear since I bought it but couldn't turn it down for the price. It has a notchey old MX7 ATM

I couldn't justify the price of buying new.. It's not worth it from an economic point of view.

I'm looking at getting an r33 box.
I'm not sure of the condition. It needs a new clutch and bearing as it has excess noise and does not disengaging much when I push the clutch in... Have to use the shifter lol

Iv seen them going for around a grand here in WA. Im plan on buying one off an importer. as I can not be stuffed paying 400 to fly down to Perth to have a look at boxes sitting in people's long grass

Are the clutches the same for mx7 and to R33?

Just gotta keep looking and the perfect on will pop up some time.

The MX7 clutch uses a 10" fly wheel and the R33 a 9.5" flywheel.

U can fit the MX7 clutch in the R33 box but the flywheel may or may not scape on the bell housing due to some inconsistencies in the casting. It can be grinned out or you can just let it make its own path once its in there.

I would recommend getting a VL N/A MF5 9.5" clutch built to suit.

Check the below thread out though. There is some contradicting info in there but you will work it out after a few google searches.

If that is the case and I confirm it will fail on the housing I'll buy an r33 skyline clutch kit. The blocks are the same and the r33s put out around 180 kw. Can't see it being an issue.
Cheers

Alot of people For, and Against aftermarket gearsets... Depends on your use

Probably not worth it for drag racing, as you'll be blowing up something, whether its gears or selector forks or synchros, may as well buy 10 second hand boxes than get a PPG or PAR built. TEMPER had an expensive box built by PPG i believe and ended up back with standard GTST boxes..

Bit different for circuit, Chaser_88 is the best to talk to about that, he's had some good/bad experiences with both brands

i have a wrecker spec box with a short shifter i only put oil in it because it was empty in the frame of mine its cheap lets break it then think about something different it did 4 years on the road running in the 11s @ 130ish mph at the track then another 2 years of drag only running 10s @ high 130mph with full slicks and 6800rpm two step launch and still all good. It has been through 2 blown clutches, 1 smashed centre bearing, 3 broken uni's, 1 pretzal tailshaft, 2 folded lower control arms and then 2 broken axles. I pulled it down thinking i should look at the damage NONE wasnt even fillings in the oil THEY ARE TUFF
