You could always swap the diff center for a 3.7 R31 center as well.

Hi im new to the VL scene. I am considering buying a VL wagon. Just wanted to know a rough price on the mods below, and also if i only did the first 3 mods in that list would there be a big difference performace wise? (sorry if stupid or repeated question):

Mod List:
- Exhaust / Extractors (2 1/4 inch or 2 1/2 inch with extrators)
- Advanced Timing (~ 20 degrees on PULP)
- Cold Air Intake mods, (K&N filter and/or custom piping)
- Cam and Chip Package
- Changing of gear rations (3.9 -> 4.11)
- Port and polish of heads

Exhaust I'd say you could probably pick up for around 600 dollars. Maybe more maybe less, depends where you go.
The timing you could do yourself with a timing light, or a friendly mechanic should do it for nothing.
CAI you can do yourself aswell, the K&N filter would be dear, but the panel type is recommended, then get yourself some pvc piping and run it yourself.

Cam and chip packages start stretching the wallets a bit and they are generally a small power increase, the HP3 package I keep seeing seems the best, but as with anything management wise, an off the shelf chip isn't going to be best, it has to suit what you have.

Gear ratio's, pick up the center from a pintara, then get a friendly mechanic again. Should be a good change with that one, you'd notice it on the highway aswell though.

Port and polish - I see this one as a waste of time, somewhere along the line you have to think about how far you want to go with your n/a engine. I couldn't justify the cost when I had my n/a.
.

Hey guys, my VL is pretty stock at the moment ay, its only the RB20 n/a. Apart from pulling the RB20 out and throwing in a 30, wht are my best un major mods to start off with?, i have the pod filter on there and me and my mate actually did a bit of custom piping and ran it from just under the front guard INTO the front of the pod, we were able to get some pipe that fitted perfect. WORKS A CHAMP!

haha. std turbo vl's are slow. my n/a kept up with them.

exhaust extractors , head work, cai, 5spd, best run 15.815 , now i got n/a auto vl with exhaust extractors. blow head gasket and still beats vn's lol .

gonna rip engine and gearbox out of old car and do the following.

cam and chip.
more headwork.
new injectors. and mini spool or lsd. then see what the **** runs.

also get it dyno tuned.

Whoa! I wonder what power it makes? It's probably a show pony, but the setup looks nuts.

hey people im new here,
i have a 1988 vl gts manual 3l, lowered, 18 inch rims, skimmed and acid dipped head, fully rebuilt bottom end, k&n panel filter full 2 1/2 through to a 3" tail pipe, reprayed dash and a momo gt legacy s/wheel.
it went alright before the rebuild, but now it just wheel spins everywhere! i cant help it even with real gud tyres.
just reading some comments about removing the mesh in the airflow meter, what is its actual purpose being there? and will i notice the difference at all?
any input on the car or increasing power would be choice! cheers

its a single spinner too, so that makes it worse...

how do you get 235's to stop hitting the guards? its chop chop my tire grind the lip or tap with a hammer?
i had the same problem with my 18's, if you lowered the car then it wud rub on the left hand side. out an adjustable panhard rod in so it pulls your diff over. i did that and it still rubbed! but my car loves making the rear tyres quickly dissapear so i changed the brand of tyre, same size but no rub! some brands label with the same size but have small differneces in width and height. nuf said!

worth the extractors and exhaust, ive got a n/a berlina got new pacemaker extractors $500 fitted with a 2 1/2 inch cat bak exhaust with a 3inch dumpy 2 finish it off $300 and i noticed a bit more power also gave it a awesome tone its worth it, only if ur not going to turbo it down the track though..then extractors r a waste of money..
