My 1969 KE10 Corolla

My KE10 is very cute and seeing some of the other cars in this thread area, I thought I’d add it too. My fiancé Darren and I have done most of the work. The car came out of the factory with like 16kw @ wheels and now has 156kw @ wheels.

This is a retro pic taken by my friend for Zoom (It is the only good shot I have from the front in its current form)

This car was pretty much a bare shell / no interior, trims, etc but with a 55kw @ wheels garden blo thru set up with:

 Stock 4K engine (1300cc)
 petite Garrett T2 turbo
 Charade GTti intercooler

I bought it in ‘00 and we put on a Garrett T25 (.48 exhaust) and a Supra intercooler. But I cracked a ring land @ 16psi racing Adelaide’s fastest ET Pulsar. Then I got a 1500cc K motor.

The original 4K head was prepared by a mate. C/R was dropped to 7.43:1 c/r (2 extremities of 5k dished piston / 4k head chamber area). Standard intake valves still reside inside to this day, but the exhaust valves have been substituted for larger items to improve flow.

I had to make my own pushrods. I joined 5K bottoms to 4K tops using cut down bolts inside to thread them together and nuts to lock the adjustment and a weld dag to stop them coming loose – funny as, but they lasted 1000km and did some 8000rpm pulls before a few unwound themselfs! New bottom end:

 Shot peened rods
 Shot Peened crank
 Precision Hypertech pistons
 Overbore
 Crow heavy duty valve springs.
 Double row timing chain
 Repco special $95 cam grind

I assembled the new motor myself and put the car back together again under the guidance of a mate with a workshop. The new 5K blow-thru set up performed fine up to about 12psi, but the carby cracked in half and had to be replaced with a new DGV! The power-band was between 4500 – 8200rpm. No power was officially recorded as but a ‘gestimate’ was 100 / 110kw @ the wheels. Carby sealing problems began to surface continually and tuning was difficult.

I wanted to run 20psi so I had to find an alternative. So next came:

 4K-injection EFI manifold
 13b series 4 n/a injectors
 VL turbo throttle body
 Microtech LT8
 320hp (.64 exhaust) T28

Back at the dyno, power peaked at 115kw @ the wheels on 20psi – but the dyno cell was 42ºC. The intercooler was struggling with a 6psi pressure drop across the core.

I hand painted the gauges to match the Autometer tacho

The next things were added:

 Custom plenum / shorter runners
 Custom FMIC
 HKS2530

FMIC fitment

HKS2530 before fitment

The result was an increase of peak power but a huge lift in mid range power and torque and full boost delivered 700rpm earlier at 3800rpm. Peak power / torque is made at 6200rpm and power was 140kw @ the wheels. I had the interior and wheels done and call the theme ‘minta race’.

Everything just fits! The stock exhaust manifold will be replaced soon.

Most gains came from the ‘cooler, however the HKS 2530 above 16psi is not making expected power/ torque on the 1.5L. Recently, a custom grind cam, bigger exhaust valves and Manley home-made pushrods have increased power to 156kw @ the wheels on 23psi. The little wheels start lifting off the rollers at 100mph!

The diff has been locked and it has done a 13.3 @ 108mph with a Corolla 5 speed - but it wouldn’t go into 4th and had a badly leaking exhaust pipe. (Darren drove that time because the Adelaide Nationals is the only day of the year I wear a skirt and he got it ready for that meet anyway)

At Adelaide 4, 6 & Rota Nats, ‘05– note new authentic KE10 Japanese fender mirrors

There’s a huge amount of guess work involved with expected performance and component durability. Worked naturally aspirated Club Car 4K’s can only provide limited info, and then those guys get a bit ‘secretive’ and don’t want to talk to a girl, haha!

(I also have SLO 069 numberplates for it too now). It gives the guys a bit of a giggle with it's double meaning.

I just realised i could sign in under my wifes name.

Corolla has been sitting in the shed under a car cover for the last 3.5yrs.
We sold the drivetrain out of it just before we had our son, as i want ed some money for the r31 and it was tough on one wage, etc, etc.

Anyways i have been slowly collecting parts for the last 2 yrs(mainly secondhand) to keep cost down, till i could afford another conversion.

first i found a cutdown hilux rear end, all ready to bolt in from the rotorworx ke10 corolla, 4.3, locked and they have the 30 spline axles so thats the axle blowing days over.

next i found a 4agze with no manifolds sitting in a shed cheap, its the last of them with the crank angle sensor, massive conrods and forged pistons, looks to me like it could take high 200rwkw's/30psi on stock internals.

So then i got a 4a to w series supra bellhousing and a W58 supra box, so hopefully the whole setup is pretty bulletproof.

I still have my old hks 2530(aka garret 2860RS) and a hks cast hi-mount 4age exhaust mani, smallport 4age inlet, still have the old cooler and 2 1/2 inch exhaust i can use.
Had my old microtech remapped for a 4age, have my r31 bosch coils left over so i can use a multicoil setup.
Using the r31's old 700cc injectors and fuel pump setup so i can run the ke10 on E85 and buy new stuff to run the r31 on e85.

Should make around 220-230ish rwkw on around 23-24ish pounds of boost
depending on timing with the e85 i reckon, enough in this car anyway....

Car is currently getting engine fitted/ tunnel cut, i will put up pics as it progresses, but we are in no hurry, just glad its not rotting in the garage anymore
cheers
darren(jet r31)

yep it is .... cars starting to show signs of age now, it got
painted about 14-15yrs ago, so the rust is starting to come out.
Paintjobs are expensive these days, i reckon it would be $6-7G to tidy it up
again, so thats last on the list.

Think i will paint the intercooler matt black this time. I already replaced the cannon with a stock muffler thats not hooked up, and have the exhaust dump right behind it.

Alos have 14's now with the crown hubcaps, to fit the hilux drums and ke70 front discs.
cheers
