Picked up the VL from Sure Shift today - gearbox is all in and done!!!

Pic of it on the tow truck on the way home..

Once home, started straight away to get what I could done out of the way before it goes off for the exhaust on Monday morning.

First up was to take off the old crappy looking water pump and put the new one on.

Also added was the PCV hoses, new VT Accel Cable, and all the other sensors that had so far been missing (Cam, Crank, temp, etc).

Pic of the Starter motor now installed too..

Also put in the new Dipstick (Lokar flexable lockable dipstick)

Tomorrow i'll get some photo's of the trans cooler and brackets that were set up, and see if I can get some pics of the shifter cable setup/gearbox from under the car etc..

Tomorrow's jobs include trial fitting the wiring on the engine, and seeing about mounting the coils under the dash.

RB-GEM - fits straight up with the only modification being to widen the hole in the VL accel pedal by drilling with 8.5mm drill bit.

Andrew - wow, that really is going back! haha.. not many people remember my first Calais I used to have.

Didn't get many photo's today as I was full out trying to get the coils and wiring sorted...

In progress photo of the wiring being sorted out - on the engine sorting out lengths of the wires and where they are going to run.

Also looked at mounting the coils under the dash - not alot of room under there, so looked at potentially mounting the coils here instead:

Opinions anyone? Advice on where to mount the coils? Can't be in the engine bay.

VL gets towed off to [COMPANY-A] for the exhaust in the morning, so will have to sort the coils out when it gets back.

I've seen them run there before, just need to make sure the moisture is kept out.

The one I did see installed like that had holes drilled and rubber grommets. It still kinda looked messy.

I mounted my LS coils on the front of the drivers side chassis rail. That was with a RB30 though. Is there a particular reason you can't put them in the engine bay?

re: engine bay - a) on the rails will probably end up too close to the exhaust headers and b) don't want to as i'm trying to clear the engine bay as much as possible to make it neat and tidy.

Thinking I might just bite the bullet and spend the time to remove the a/c box and blower/heater setup from under the dash. Grab me a 12v demister (for legalities) and get the coils under the dash as close to the firewall/trans tunnel intersection as possible. Make a hole for the leads to pass through and all done.

Just means i'll have to go to the effort of removing most of the dash. PITA that is...

These are a pretty good alternative to running the actual lead straight through the firewall too

I think Pacemaker do an off-shelf item, but the primaries are only 1 3/4"... I've gone 1 7/8" primaries. I've heard that the Pacemaker ones also need a bit of tweaking to get them to fit right (heating and bending as they hang down a bit low, or hit the underside or something)

CAE also do an off the shelf LS1 into VB-VL 4-1's with 1 7/8" primaries that takes into account Power Steering - but they want $1500 for them, and being that it would suit thier engine mounts, trans mounts, starter relocation - there may be some modification needed as I'm not using thier mounts (i'm using Redwood Fabrication mounts). If the mounts are the tiniest bit different - who knows if they will fit right - particularly since I also have a T400 behind the LS.

I went with getting the exhaust done compeltely custom - then it's going to fit 100% on my car with what I have in the best way with my specifications.

Yea there's always something wrong with off the shelf items. My gearbox crossmember for t56 was shocking. Going to give the muscle garage crossmember and tuff mounts a go. My pacemaker extractors were pretty good.

1 question Mark. When you cut the k frame, did you a weld on any supports around the area or just left it?

No additional supports... Will have to see what the engineer says about it though... lol.. should be right though. The amount taken out wasn't much (looks worse that it is in one of the above photo's) and the engine is some 50kg+ lighter than the RB30 setup.
