Diff question..

hello all,

i've been looking everywhere and finding little or no info...

i have recently purchased an 88 vl calais turbo 5 speed...i have been told it is meant to have a LSD?? if this is the case when i do burnouts in it only the right wheel spins??

does the oil need to be changed??? or is there no LSD??

any help would be great

single spinner mate, you'll know if it's LSD when you go out in the wet (not on public roads of course), tramp it and the ass end should start to slide to the left!

jack rear of car up. put in nuetral and handbrake off. spin one wheel around by hand. if the opposite wheel spins in the opposite direction then youve got an open dif centre (or a very ****ed lsd) if both wheels spin same direction then yeh its lsd. lsds arent realy very affective on grippy surfaces unless they r real tight.

thats crap. LSD's work best on ghrippy surfaces because there is load on the planetry gears pushing more force into the cones or clutches(depending on what diff you got) hence locking up tighter. try jacking up one wheel with the other side on the gound. get a torque wrench and put on a wheel nut and try to spin the wheel. a standard LSD will let the wheel spin at about 80NM. the tighters the diff the more torque required. now if you were to apply an opposite force to the other wheel the "breakoff" torque will be higher because there is force pushing back at it.

ever seen someone who get get both wheels to spin in the rain?? tell them to pull the handbrake slightly and watch both wheels spin. loading up the planetry gears will make it lock harder hence spinning both wheels

what i was meaning is that lsd,s are a better tool in the bush (4wd) rather then on the road.if you dont know what i mean then you dont know what your talking about. if ya wanna spin two wheels then lock the dif. lsd,s arent designed so we can spin two wheels they r designed to keep the car from being unstable under accel and decel

errrr, spinning the wheels is a by product of what you're saying, isn't it? that just means that your torque can overcome the friction between the tyre and the road surface, it's not rocket science!!!!!

A LSD will act similarly to an open centered diff when lifting wheels, or in low traction environments such as mud, hence they are pretty much useless in the bush. This is why nearly all serious 4wd'ers use lockers of some description, Air Lockers in 99% of cases. They certainly do not rely on LSD's to get them through.

that is so true they use arb air lockers, i have put 1 in a 4wd, what they do is undo the big diff gear(forget what it is called) then bolt it onto the locker then put it all back in and run the air line to the locker, hence instint twin spinners.

I put a vl lsd into my mates car, when i spun the wheels off the ground one went one way the other went the other. when you stoped one wheel you couldnt move the other one at all, i started the car and put it in gear and both wheels spun forward but i could stop 1 wheel, this was a vl calais lsd.
Any ideas?????

HEKTIC, there were some vlt's that came out with an open diff, search for "diff tag numbers" and you should find your diff there

As mentioned above check the diff tag thread in the tech section.

Contrary to belief VL turbo's did not come standard with LSD.
