use the hand break to help hold it on the stall

it was only a single spinner so i could really get a good launch anywhere as it would just spin..

Ideal stall and gears for a 286 are closer to 4200 and 4.1, 3000 and 3.08's just wont cut it, it will turn a 12 sec engine into a 14 sec engine. I would doubt VERY much that you will need an handbrake assistance to hold max stall the engine simply will not make enough torque at such low rpm. what sort of rpm can you get out it on the brake? Hate to be negative, but with those gears and converter a smaller cam would DEFINATELY go faster.

If you're not going to change the car at all, as far as stalling it up goes, i would suggest not stalling it up at all, and just letting it have it, sometimes the increasing inertia of the engine can stretch the converter momentarily, it may only be 50rpm, but it could net you a tenth. You will need to experiment to find what works best for your own combo.

yeh best i can stall it to is around 2000, thats light to medium braking..
at the moment with a single spinner with 3.08's i dont think i could do much practising.. i really want to give it a good tune, get a new auto cooler/better auto and stuff like that, i dont really like over revving it at the moment (i feel like with those things fixed i could still be holding first at 5500rpm)

i really need some sort of cold air in the mix too..

keep the feed back coming guys.. it all helps
