EVL & Oliver's VLCT Cross Australia Cruise

Yes that is right your not seeing things we are stupid enough to drive 5130.7kms from Townsville in Qld to Perth in WA.

And we going to do it in a 1986 VL Calais Turbo!

When: Friday 20th March, 2009
Where: Townsville, QLD

Why?: To collect RB30DEBT v.2

So if you live in any of the following towns:

Charters Towers, QLD
Roma, QLD
Walgett, NSW
Bourke, NSW
Cobar, NSW
Broken Hill, NSW (Any members want to show us the nightlife on Saturday the 21st?)
Port Augusta, SA
Eucla, WA
Kalgoorlie, WA

or any town in between give us a wave as we boost through over the 4 days of our trip/fail in our attempt.

We will be updating this thread as we go.

EVL aka Chris will post up some vehicle details shortly!

Cheers,
Oliver.

How are you initially getting over there?

i bet you wont make it back in 4 days.... its alright to have it all planned out that your going to drive *this* fast for this man hours a day, but it rarely works like that. plus its a VL, so it'll break down heaps.

make sure you carry a couple of jerry cans full of water (one for you, one for the car) few basic tools etc

mad props for havin a crack though

When you drive through Pt Augusta, lock the doors. Don't make eye contact

that seriously is a very cool idea. sounds like fun, and be another chapter to say you have done.
just take lots of cds and stuff to keep you busy. surely it must get pretty boring on that drive haha.

just one question... taking one sleeping bag or two you can zip together?

I'll give you a heads up.

A mate got back to echuca last night from charleville in inland qld.

A lot of the roads around bourke have been washed away, as well as a bridge, due to recieving 10 inches of rain in a small period of time.

make sure your car has a 2" spring and shackle lift, and 35 inch muddies.

Also, the only fuel is unleaded or diesel, no gas or high octane, for hundreds of kays

also, a couple of jerry cans of fuel, my mate had 6. and watch a certain group of people when you are stopped, if you know what i am saying

Yeah cheers for the info, we arent stopping at Bourke just driving through

We have a couple of alternate routes in place if needed too, not going as far east as Charleville.

wow thanks for that info mulkers! very helpful! we have a couple of alternative routes to get down south but that way is the quickest we'll have to watch what happens there over the coming week.

We will be taking as many jerrys as we possibly can, tools, spare, oil, coolant, afm, cas, ignitor box etc.

I can't wait for it gonna be a hell of a trip and we'll keep you all updated

New car is currently owned by Jubs11 and is the beautiful blue VLCT in this thread http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=157338

If anyones keen that doesn't know about my original car - thread is here http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/showthread.php?t=128035

Keep the tips coming too guys, we're trying to plan it all out as well as possible to avoid disaster.

Stop overs will be in Roma, Broken Hill and Eucla if we go the route we have chosen tonight.

Cheers,
Chris

What a great idea! About time someone did this!

I was going to suggest a spare CAS, but I see it's on the list! Maybe a car bra? Most of those inland roads are pretty rough.

Are you taking a trailer? The VL's boot won't fit all the fuel and other bits you'll need along the way.

I think will take you longer than 4 days to travel that distance if sitting on the speed limit.... if you dont drive at Night because theres a significantly higher risk of hitting roos.
From Port Augusta all the way to Perth theres fuel at least every 250-300km so you shouldnt need to worry about too many jerry cans, and I'd say it may be the case for most of the trip, but spare is always good.

Take the usual spares - CAS, AFM, radiator hoses, check all other coolant hoses, take coolant/water. I'd even also take some of the **** you spray into the tyres that seals leaks, Incase you get 2 flat tyres at once and also a mini compressor for pumping tyres up.

Also - I dont know if you should bother about night life in Broken Hill

EDIT: OH I didn't realise it was an RB25 - well less dramas than if it was a 30 take the AFM and CAS anyways but they should be more reliable than the RB30 stuff.
PS Get a car bra too!
