Well project has take a slight turn.. all good though! Was on the way home from QLD Transport of all places the other day and spotted this gem for sale:

1988 VL SL Executive
3.0L RB30
Alpine white paint, Sandalwood interior

All trim and paint codes match up, I think it's pretty original and un-molested actually.

So now going to use this as my shell. Still undecided to keep it as an SL, or put the calais bits on that I have. leaning towards keeping the SL look however.

Picked it up for $400, completely running - could of driven it home if it was registered. Took it for a quick squirt around the block, and while it's abit spluttery from the 2+yr old fuel, drives great considering.

Pulled the disc diff out of the parts car to go into the SL, then cleaned it up ready to be painted when it stops raining.

Mrs approved bulk spending so this project is going to get a move on.

Ordered:

TCE 4200 9.5" Converter
LS1 Loom
LS1 PCM
LS1 Water Pump
LS1 Balancer
Undercar surge tank / twin pump holder
B&M shifter adaptor to suit VL automatic shroud
B&M Pro Ratchet Shifter
AU twin thermo fan's

Still got alot more things on the shopping list, but that should get me started

Went to a friends workshop today with all the motor parts, I probably could have screwed it together at home, I have put together a 308 and a 540 BBC before - but given the newer technology, I would rather have someone watching over and checking what I was doing, plus he had all the tools and essentials on hand.

Sofar we have cleaned the block, got the crank in, checked clearances with plastic gauge on the mains caps, mains caps all torqued upto spec, started assembling pistons and rods, filing down rings as we go, checked rod bearings with plastic gauge aswell. All clearances are within spec and everything is spinning freely and feeling as it should, got 4 pistons and rods in today and called it a day. Probably work on it abit more next weekend, I have to work around my friend and my schedule.

Just some random pictures from the day:

Post Office lady now hates me, just wait till the 4 new disc's turn up though

B&M Pro Ratchet shifter - assembly required :Paranoid:

LS1 Loom & ECU out of an auto WH stato - for my use either manual or auto loom will suffice, as I am using a manualized TH400 anyway. VT-VY looms will work, but VT-VX is apparently easier to work with. Also got all new Bendix Ultimate brake pads for the new discs on order.

LS1 Harmonic Balancer, Water pump and the most expensive bolt I have ever purchased.. $54 ARP balancer bolt.

Repro Ford AU Thermo fans, these things scream at full power.

2x Bosch 044 & inline filter. Don't worry about the thermo's, that noise will be drowned out by these two

Well it's been pouring down here at home, flash flooding etc and roads being closed, as such haven't been able to travel out to work so had some time up my sleeve the past few days, so I got busy.

Fitted up the twin AU thermo fans to the VL radiator, still need to attach it to the radiator somehow:

Pulled the VL Turbo brakes off the parts car to be cleaned up and overhauled, took them over to another friends workshop and sandblasted, then painted them:

Bought new pistons and seal rebuild kit for all four corners, promptly ruined two rear dust seal's trying to get them on (tore them) so will need to get new ones of these before I go much further:

Also got a chance to go back to my friend's workshop and spend some more time assembling the engine - all pistons and rods in, camshaft in, lifters in, lifter cups in. Then cleaned up the pair of heads that I am going to be using, these had alot of caked on carbon - similar treatment to the engine block, outside with the degreaser, gernie and a razor blade.

Rear end 95% complete, new discs, calipers rebuilt, new pads - just waiting on new brake hardline and bleeder valve's.

Ordered 50/50 rear and 90/10 Pedder strut's. The rear's have arrived and just waiting on the fronts. TCE have finished and sent my TH400 > LS1 4200 stall converter.

Ordered a new ARP head stud kit as there was some washers and nut's missing from the existing one, and it was unknown how many times it had been used, also a set of Cometic 0.40" head gaskets.

Should be back at my friends workshop this week to swap over all the rocker gear and get the heads on at the least.

Few more bits have turned up..

Custom surge tank & twin pump bracket. AN fittings throughout. (Forums sponsor Red Star Fabrications!!)

B&M Ratchet shifter "dropdown box" so the ratchet will sit in the standard VL shifter cover.

Completed diff ready to go into the SL. (hardlines finished since last photo)

TCE 4200 9.5" torque converter, LS1 base plate, TH input.

Another couple of hours at my friends workshop. Pulled all rocker gear off the original heads (PSI valve springs) and put them on the nice and clean $100 set of 241 heads. Fitted the new ARP 12pt head stud kit, Cometic 0.40" head gaskets, torqued heads up, Mounted up the oil pump, fitted double row timing chain and dialed in the cam.

Now need to do some more shopping, quite afew items still needed before we can go much further:

2x Knock Sensor
Cam angle sensor
Crank angle sensor
Coolant temp sensor
Bung for opposite side head (coolant sensor port)
Oil pickup o-ring
Rocker cover gaskets
Rear main seal
Thermostat
Sump gasket
Windage tray
Valley cover gasket

Some of the items are not needed, but just a case of "it's easier and a good idea to change this now" then later.

Anyway here is random photos of the day:

Unfortunately like alot of projects this one is coming to an end before being completed.

I have decided to purchase a rolling full chassis drag car and put my running gear into it, once things start to happen I'll be sure to post up a thread on here

Cheers
