Hi All!
Have recently brought my first vl well my first car and thought i'd stat a build thread! I brought the car from a P Plater and needed alot of work, rust repairs, interior, paint etc. (The usual with the vl's) but im not complaining hahah! Forgot to get some snaps of when i first got the car but here are some more recent pics with bumpers removed and rear end stripped!
Has No Paint on some parts of the roof!

The Heart <3

Theres some rust around the window doesnt seem to be too too bad can't see any holes but who knows what its like under the seals! any suggestions on a fix for this?

and since im running on a tight budget being 15 years old and working at McDonalds i picked up4 Black ceptors and recently painted them silver, not the best Job but will do for now

The boot of the car has major rust and by major its to another level! petrol tank is visible, got holes the size of a foot long in my boot and also have rust in my spare wheel well! was going to buy a new boot floor from rare spares for around the $200 mark. so found someone wrecking a vl and got a sweet deal on a boot floor and wheel well for $120 and just needs a clean!

My front and rear bumpers were also cracked really badly so brought used but good condition un cracked bumpers for 200 for both! (dont have any pictures!) and my rear tails were cracked and started there own garden in there! so brought vl berlina tail lights and centre garnish and look much better imo than exec tail lights!

Also had a really crap interior, seats were ripped, carpet was dirty to another level so decided i would clean the interior! picked up some front seats no holes or rips for $140 and shampooed and cleaned the interior! also found a calais cluster with 160,xxx kms on it so that also been installed! been trying to take my tape deck out since i want to put the antenna cable back in since its hanging out the side but so much work and dont want to damage it since im wanting to keep the car to as close to as stock as possible!

will post some pictures of the interior finished either tomorrow or the next day! now i've jusy begun remove door moulding which are a btch to take off already snapped one

any opinions on what to do next? wanting to do a manual conversion and convert the brakes to all disc! so just saving up some money for that and has anyone got a manual conversion kit in melbourne area?

hey dude check the n/a section for the standard mods list but best thing you can do from my experience with an n/a and on my current turbo is:

get everything functioning as it should
do a proper service inc belts timing fan etc and sparks and leads and alll fluids.

brakes - rebuild them.
source a disc rear end,
do a vt / rx7 / r32 or at the least a turbo upgrade at the front (turbo is the same as standard vs so cheap to source)

vt brake booster upgrade and braided lines.

I recently finished an rx7 / braidec / vt booster upgrade inc a complete rear caliper rebuild and i should have done it 6 year ago its that bloody good.

theres a full $ breakdown in my thread but its pretty cheap if you can do it yourself which you should be able to with a gregorys, this forum and some patience.

re the belts, do it, i lost a timing belt on my old n/a and the owner said it had all been done. lesson? sometimes out of sight is out of mind. better safe than sorry.

also learn to read tyre age and get some safe / nice tyres.

finally if you want decent oomph on top of all of this extractors, 2 1/4" exhaust, re-usable air filter and manual conversion. (spark plug gapping / clean running car will also help. maybe a radiator and oil flush.)

finally anything you do make sure its returnable to stock

good luck and be sure to ask for directions to anything like tech and servicing and parts. and get a blood gregory's service manual.

---------- Post added 03-08-14 at 21:07 ----------

i made all of the bad mistakes on my cars over the years. **** tyres, not doing complete services, crappy brakes, and half assing the mods.

i built everything up over time using gumtree ebay and forums and you can save 50% if not more on parts price by being patient. and you then get more bang for buck esp on your budget.

ometimes though like tyres its important to spend the $. especially on an oldr car with no irs / abs / electronic stability control etc.

Thanks Mate! Recently changed all fluids, spark plugs, leads, filter! Still wanting to change all hoses and belts but will have to wait till next week since I'm broke haha!!

Definitely wanting to upgrade my brakes to discs! Just having trouble finding a manual box in good condition! Recently pick up some extractors, just waiting to be installed just wanting to finish everything else and return it to stock and get reg and roady before doing performance mods!

Any suggestions on colour I was thinking of going Maranello red and mx grey moulds!

Fair enough hahaha! and yeah wouldn't also mind alpine white! look pretty sick or i was thinking like a bit of a darker navy blue!

Quick Update:
When i first brought my car the antenna cable was sticking out the side and unplugged and was really annoying me since the tape deck works so today i decided to rip apart the dash! found it pretty tricky to be honest! broke an air vent in the process! with a bit of swearing and anger was finally able to take it off! just reconnected the cable but now the tape deck wont work! Left it all unplugged since i want to try and chase a 4" speakers for the side speakers and really don't want to drill holes for the side! wrecks the o.g look imo!

Found a pretty huge spider and nearly died of fright hahaha! lucky it was dead!!

Some new seats that i piicked up really clean apart from a small hole on the vinyl side on both of them
.

And this is how it currently looks in the interior!

That spider is a dealer fitted option.

Good progress man, I think non Calais fronted vls white over mx looks great. I think your factory colour is Kimberley bronze? ( someone correct me if I'm wrong), would look good in that, not many in that colour

yeah spray same colour. last thing you need is a white or red vl with gold engine bay and doorjambs.

do factory over MX i recon and m,aybe if youre keen do the berlina conversion. Gold grille and black window surrounds with the pinstripes on bumpers. Berlinas look wicked.

assuming you arent bothered fiddling with it a bit.

good work on the dash its a bitch of a job the first time.

Decided to go out today and begin removing my windscreen to remove the rust! In the process of removing the weather strips and accidentally ended up cracking my windscreen but planned on getting a. New one fitted regardless! Has anybody got any tips on how to remove the black stuff holding it in and also any tips on removing rust around the windscreen? Wood an angle grinder and a steel wool wheel work?

QUICK UPDATE
Decided i may as well begin fixing rust around the windows and as i'm broke i've decided to do it all myself! and not only cause i'm broke but you to get that feeling of satisfaction that you've done it your self! so i began to pull off my front window and ended up cracking it! so moved on to the back window! took me a while to remove the seals around the window! but finally got it off and didn't even crack the glass and used only a flat head and a blade and some pliers to remove the window! so after i took the window out it look fine until i saw the bottom sill! it had multiple holes and also had been eaten at on the edge! was going to weld it up but then decided may as well do it properly so I've decided to either get the rear window sill from rare spares for $182 or sus out someone wrecking a vl and try and find one without rust! Also have another two problems, first of all my tape deck wont work anymore after removing to install the antenna cable and some 4 inch speaker to replace stock! did turn on for a bout a second but then died out! and second problem is that how would i tune my afm as its been blowing a lot of smoke and may believe its running to rich! anyway here's some pictures of the rust!

Just make sure you cut all the rust out, if you don't it won't be long til it's back.. And all that work was for nothing.

clean up that front windscreen lace, killrust it, paint it, do everything you can to make sure it doesnt rust again too - once that starts rusting again, hello windscreen rust all over again..

I'm planning on getting a new rear windscreen sill for the rear so it doesn't come back! Rare spares have them for $182 so I think that would be the best thing to do! Replace that kill rust, paint new seals and she'll be alright! Do it once do it right!

Hey Everyone! Haven't been on for a while so here goes everything thats been done!

Car is currently stripped and has been semi rubbed back for a respray! Have decided to go from Kimberely Bronze To Maranello Red! Just couldn't resist the red haha! Engine will be coming out aswell, all bolt on's have been taken off and just waiting to get my mates crane to pull it out!

Also began smoothing and deleting items from my bay, taken out the radiator overflow as will be using a smaller alloy bottle next to the new radiator, Air Box is taken out as the car will be TURBOCHARGED! well after all the body work is done, fuse box is being relocated to glove box and battery is going into the boot, but contemplating whether all this is worth a defect! THinking of maybe just having a sleeper since not allowed any mods due to club reg! but can still turbo it!

Front windscreen rust has all been cleaned up, no more holes, now just need to finish the rear windscreen sill, just waiting on my welder friend to weld in a new sill and boot floor then its off to the booth to be repsrayed by myself! Going for a maranello red over Mx grey bars!

Also thinking of removing all my air conditioning compentnetns since it will tidy the bay up a bit, needs regas anyway so windows down should do the job!

Photos will be up soon!
