My Turbo vs ute

Bored as at work thought i post this up..

I think just about everyone knows of this ute its Grgich performances old ute it was featured in street commodores mag, i bought it earlier this year as i needed a ute for reasons, saw this and it was a complete package finished and ready to drive/race/what have you. Making just over 500rwhp on 17psi.



I enjoyed driving the car for about 3 months (only every second weekend or so) until i noticed it blowing alot of white smoke out of the exhaust. i pretty much knew what it was and it wasnt going to be good. i took it to my local mechanic and sure enough one of the diamond forged pistons had decided enough was enough.



The ute is still at the mechanics waiting on prices and so on atm. The block needed to be rebored because of some damage, and already being at 20thou my mechanic said he wouldnt take it any further. so a new block has been sourced, strippped and ready to go.



I also found out when the motor was pulled down that the argo forged rods didnt exist, they are standard with arp bolts. With the new motor im aiming for more boost (a tidle over 20psi) and around the 550-600rwhp mark. going ALL new forged parts in the bottom end leaving the top end much how i got it from the grgich boys.



Any way heres the specs when i bought it.

vx gts harrop brakes all round with braided lines
bilstein coilovers front, bilstein shocks rear with king springs
KAAZ lsd centre
vx clubsport t56 gearbox
custom ceramic clutch and flywheel
stainless 3 inch exhaust to twin 3inch.
custom made 100litre fuel tank with baffles, bosch 044 pump, stainless 1/2inch supply line, braided fittings and lines.
complete rebuilt v6 3.8 litre with forged rods and pistons, ported and polished heads, stainless valves, comp springs
custom crow camshaft with double row timing chain
garrett 35/40 turbo on custom steam pipe manifolds
turbosmart wastegate, bov, eboost2 controller, and fuel reg
stainless 3 inch intercooler piping
aluminium radiator custom made
engine bay all smoothed and painted.

Ute didnt drive that nicely with the 20s so i got these and painted them for the time being.



I have since got some ssv 19s that are being powder coated black atm. and i just received my mini tubs in the mail from mcdonald bros. Going to be running 275s under the rear.

I do remember seeing it in sc, always admired it. After owning a vn v6 with a single turbo I know what they're like with maintenance lol, let alone reliability. Very upsetting to find out it wasn't what you thought it was in there. Good luck with it all, keep us all posted on the progress!

Don't u just love it wen ur told its got all the gd bits then wen it gets pulled down, few parts are lack lustre to say the least.

The rods in this have always been hot powdered forged L32 rods from the States which they run in 600hp÷ engines...

Don't take everything you read in Street Commodores as legit as sometimes its out of the owners hands as to what's written!

Also, it was never advertised for sale with Argo rods.

No worries mate, mechanic told me they were standard. I presumed they were argo after reading sc mag and when buying the ute not told other wise. Not bagging the guys from grgich at all they r both good blokes and everything else on the ute is to a very high standard.

Cheers guys i will keep yas posted on how it goes.

Been told the come stroker cranks are pretty weak and i was happy with the power the ute was making before. With a bit more boost and a few more good bits shood be more than enough power.

Bit of an update, motor and parts returned from applied automotive. all we r waiting for now is a new custom cam from camtech. The new motor will consist of:

new block 20thou over, fully preped and balanced
same heads with a little bit more work and 4 angle valve grind
ross racing pistons and hell fire rings
spool H beam rods
All ACL bearings and gaskets including metal head gaskets

Mini tubs r goin in slowly, got both tacked in place now we just need to makeup some plates to fill them in.
