Importing cars from overseas.

anybody know if importing cars from oversea (japan) is a risky thing to do or is it safe? because i am trying to import a decent family car from oversea (BMW) they go pretty cheap if the car is older then 10 years. and i know all about the import fee, tax, duty, check up, scan etc.... so who ever has any experience with importing to give me a few info on the down side and the up side of importing a vehicle from another country

BMW older than ten years from a place that likely has snow sounds like the sort of thing that your woudn't want as a family car, and wouldn't be cheap.

Although if you are still keen, have a look at sights like jspec imports

as above plus resale would be shocking for a grey import BMW esp over 10 years old

a decent family car
, prices are at rock bottom atm here, you can get a near new Commodore for $10-$15K, why would you bother with the hassle of importing a car, esp one that's older and a brand that depreciates badly?

i agree, family car needs to be reliable and cheap, and liquidated quickly if needed.

I just bought an 05 territory ghia with leather, premium sound, coil overs, tinted windows, 22 inch wheels and tow pack, 100,000km for 18k. Car is mint. Family cars have never been more well priced

You won't be able to import a BMW unless it's older than 1989.... (or a personal import which you've owned and driven for more than 1 year overseas)

http://raws.infrastructure.gov.au/

List of vehicles you can import, if you can find a RAW who will import it for you:

A s13 to thrash is very different to a break-down-mobile for the family.

Buy the newest falcon/camry/commodore or similar you can.

If family is small, things like Accord, Liberty etc are great cars.
