Abandoned Car...What can i do?

There has been a car abandoned for about 6 months now in the same car spot and its rejo ran out on the 25th Sep this year....its a 88 Mitsubishi Colt...The door barrel had already been broken so i could have a look inside.. interior is fine and had a look under the bonnet...and it seems to look fine...my neighbor saw people about 2 month ago put a new battery in it...but nothing happened and no one has been around since...the council put a notice sticker on it to be removed yesterday.
I know now that its the councils since its out of rejo...and i was wondering has anyone ever like claimed or bought a car that has been abandoned or any-kind of way you can buy it of them before they take it for scrap metal or something? i wouldnt mind spendin $1000 to give it a year rego and fix up a few things just for a pos daily...

hey nick,

if you go onto rockdale councils website there should be something about abandoned cars. in north sydney council, if the car is abandoned and isnt removed in the prescribed time it then becomes the property of the council. they will either scrap or sell it auction...

best bet is to call the council as you cant really just take as you wont be able to register it without a proof of purchase
.

the car may not be out of rego, it just doesn't have the current sticker

council goes through a process then it will get taken away

abandoned cars eventually get picked up by a contractor in most cases

some then go to auction

beware looking inside it or taking anything from it, you can be charged with stealing
