****ing hell

well, due to my never ending supply of bad luck with my vl.......
i have now done my head gasket
hopefully no damage to the head as its pretty new
pissed off cos the motor is pretty fresh

cars at the mech now, getting a new head gasket and the top end freshened up, wat gasket are yous using? i heard the genuine one is the best

now that the head has to come off,
im contimplating getting some head work, just some mild work
anyone know of places to get it done and rough prices?
just a thought at this stage

that sucks mat, keep at it though man, she is almost there, better the head gasket go now rather than later on down the track when you have the new ecu on....

as for headgaskets, alot of people go with a genuine nissan one, including myself, they cope well even with plenty of power/boost.

investigate why it blew tho.
couldve been a few reasons.. not torqued down right, leaned out and/or pinged, warped head, head not bled properly, etc etc

nissan gasket. less than $100 from any nissan dealer.

she'll be as good as new!

I suppose if you have extra money you can do some work to the head, if you think it's necessary? ;o

Big Big Word Of Warning Mat.......Be careful with buying new lifters. Have you ordered genuine lifters? Im not sure if genuine lifters are an issue...they may be as factories may have changed eg japan to china etc. Plus genuine are up around the $900 or there abouts with trade price might be a little cheaper. Best thing to do is to get the original genuine nissan lifters reconditioned. If you have genuine nissan ones, they will have the nissan insignia (sign) on the lifter. This sign means awesome. Get those originals reconditioned.

My friend Graham who is building up his vl (has been for 2 years, just funding problems), well he had just been running in new motor for less than 3 days, and he had to pull off rocker cover to measure something, anyway, it was found that a lifter had broken. Turns out, metal filings went through the motor. Motor had just been finished about 3 weeks ago and a run in tune put into it. Big end bearings buggered, camshaft was cactus, cylinders needed to be honed as some slight scraping, crosshatching needed, oil pump only just survived with some minor repair work required, turbo bearings were lucky to escape damage and rendering the turbo buggered.....so that was a relief for the turbo anyway. Costly exercise though.

All the drama was due to a lifter breaking. Apparently Graham has made numerous phone calls and things that you dont hear unless you speak to ppl directly over east (like the big workshops and the like) are that there are many guys now reconditioning the factory genuine lifters as the new ones now are not much chop. Plenty of guys having issues. Numerous phone calls revealed this to eastern states.

Just a word of warning Mat
