High Octane Fuel

Is there any point using a higher octane on a standard engine setup...(I've got a different cam I believe and that's about it)?

I filled up with 98 and ah due to the higher cost is it really worth it? I presume that these motors were tuned on 91...could any benefit be obtained by using the higher rated fuel and advancing the timing by five odd degrees?

Any suggestions?

I've been using 95 octane but my walky is standard,i wouldn't recomend using 91 octane especially if you have some mods done. The 98 octane fuel from mobil or bp is better than the other fuels out there. You could pull a few degrees out and run it on 95 but make sure it doesn't ping or you could be in trouble. It all depends if you don't mind losing a bit off power. Also if its a weekend car to get out and enjoy every now and then i would keep the power and put 98 octane in. Just my thoughts

I agree with you your saying.

Gee though, after seeing that story on four corners on Monday about peak oil...looks like driving a petrol car next decade might be something reserved for the rich...wonder if the Walky could ever run on pure ethonol???

It a better filtered fuel. 98 octane burns better.

That means you get better combustion. It's worth the extra for a performance engine.

I only use 98 octane fuel, in my calais, and will be the same for my walky. If im really low, I'll put $5 or $10 worth of premium unleaded in, just to get me to the closest BP.

100 octane is shell optimax I believe? It's not availible in WA I don't think?

Shell Optimax Extreme. 100 R.O.N fuel straight from the pump!
Use it in your XR6 Turbo, and get it tuned for that fuel. You'll notice the difference.

You shouldnt get a car tuned for Hi Octane fuel, just in case you get a bad batch.....

Get it tuned for a lower fuel, like 95, then use 98 or 100. A little extra protection. If you get it tuned for 98 or 100, and get a bad batch, and give your engine a hard time, could cause some problems.

It won't cause any problems, but the car would pick up a bit more power if you got it tuned for that fuel.*

*Tuning your car on 100 R.O.N fuel would then require you to run the car on that particular fuel full time.

Totaly agreed there mate, when I go racing I always run 10 liters of 124 octain elf, just to be safe, if engine temps come up or you get a bad batch of fuel (which happens more often than it should) it can easily destroy your engine much better to be safe than sorry and be chasing power all the time.
