View Full Version : Parcel shelf speakers?
MurderCity 19-07-02, 22:06 In the VL Commodore Executive (Turbo, if it means anything), were there speakers in the back at all? Specifically on the parcel shelf. I haven't really looked much, but I think there's another shelf under mine. It's a Gold VL, with Biege interior and a brown shelf...I might rip it up tomorrow, but I just want to know what I might find...
how are we meant to know??
but i dont think executives were released with speakers in the back parcel shelf
the previous owner mighta had some in there and took them out and put a new parcel shelf in when he sold the car
MurderCity 20-07-02, 15:36 Well, I just assumed that somebody would know if the Exec came with factory speakers in the back, but I think you've just answered my question.
Im pretty sure the execs came out with speakers only in the front. When i took my rear shelf out there was no speakers there.
^Mobil_HRT^ 02-08-02, 13:51 Yeah the exec's only came out with front speakers.
Yeah thats right... the Execs only had 4" speakers up front...
When i ran my tweeters through, i actually grabbed a screw driver, poked a hole through the damm 4" and ran the cable through there.
My VL Exec is completley Stock and it didn't come with Speakers in the back. When I went about installing my new Stereo, i found that there were Pre-Cut holes in the metal part of the Parcel Tray with metal Plates covering the holes with small bits of metal holding them on so that they can simply be pushed out. The Underlay on the Parcel Tray is also Pre-Cut into a circle so that it can just be pulled off. I think this was for the VL Models that DID come with Rear Speakers, so they could keep the design the same or something. Anyway, you have to pull out the Back Seat to get the Parcel Tray out, and if you're getting 6x9s or 10x7s don't even think about trying to use the original holes in the Metal Parcel Tray because they won't fit. I just went down to AutoBarn and bought a nice new carpeted Parcel Tray and got them to cut the holes in that and in the Metal. Just remember that you have to screw the Speakers in AFTER you put the parcel tray in because you can't do it before. Thats with my experience anyway...
most people here seem to have replaced thier original parcel shleves, just wondering if you bothered to put the "bend" in the MDF board towards the rear (so it sits flush against the wondow) if so did you do it your self or get some one to do it for you?
If you have a proper made parcel shelf, you shouldn't need to cut any metal (read illegal) to fit 6x9's or even 7x10's. I've got pioneer 6x9's on my rear shelf made from 18mm MDF (i think) and there is no metal cut.
BurgundyCalais 13-12-02, 18:55 Yeah, If you use nice straight MDF for your parcel shelf, you really shouldn't need to cut bigger holes in your metal shelf. But if you do, it won't necessarily be illegal. There are certain guidelines that need to be followed to make sure that it is roadworthy. Thats why if you don't know what you're up to, get a pro to do the cutting for you.
Gatecrasher 16-12-02, 07:39 jughead... I used a router, to carve out the "bend" in the MDF so that it sits flush against the rear window.
The shelf will sit heaps tighter if u can get your hands on one of these, plus it will look neater.
Thats why I got AutoBarn to cut the Metal, basically the Rule is that you can't cut over structural points... (Such as Ridges and Seams) I would have preferred to install the Speakers without cutting Metal, however my Clarion 6x9s wouldn't fit without doing it...
i got sound srteam 6inch splits i wanna instal in the parcel shelf of my vl exec...now there are speakerz in theback so my 6inch speaker will go in but asumein my parcel shelf isnt metal due to the speakers being there would i have to cut holes in the metal underneath to get the tweeters in???
