View Full Version : Paintshops.
Have taken my battery tray out and smoothed out most of the bumpy lumpy bits on the wheel arches. I now need someone to-
A. Colour match my paint (its Burgandy similar if not identical to Cardinal Red)
B. Prep and Paint the engine bay.
C. And turn this job around in a week! (Guaranteed?!)
Have had bad experiences with paintshops previously, seems to be a common theme in the trade where 1 week=4 or so.....
Car still has motor in but no manifolds on motor and most wiring has been removed or moved, would take a bit of masking thats all.
Any legit suggestions appreciated.
Cheers.
U can never garentee a week.
U can say it will take a week to do.
But then something comes up...blaa blaa blaa.
If u want it rushed then u can garentee a week.
Also a bit of masking... yea u never painted an engin bay b4 have u.
Get maksing tape to stick to rubber mildly oily parts that move isnt easy.
Cause first u got to get it to stick.
And then if it moves its exposes the plastic and thats when u get overspary on ur plastic bits.
Only crash repair i recomend is mount pleasnt crash , but i cant gareentee any crash repaiir to gareentee a time limit.

lol, maybe they'll throw in a free unicorn and some magic beans as well with the spray job :p
very good point steve you said what i would have so cheers
i can only suggest andrew loyds up at mk barker i get all my painten done there but cant say he will garentee a week
like we were saying no one can its the way it gose if the shop is slow you might be lucky
Why do they take work on if they know they realistically cant do the job in a certain timeframe....Thats what ****s me, i'd rather be told up front.
Anyway Chris you wanna have a look at it for me sometime? Youre down Sth arent you?
yer mate i can do that for ya and tell as close as i can on how long it will take from start to finish

I hear you Darren.
Unfortunatly, that's the WHOLE car scene.
They promise you the world, and deliver an atlas!!:D , Nothing rarely goes to plan, and 1 week = 3 weeks or so like you said.
Good luck anyways mate, hope all goes well for ya.

All industrys not just the car scene are like that.
If u turn work away your turning $$$$ away.
Better to take on the job and run behind.
Then turn it away and have someone who was booked in not turn up .
Then have ur "plebs" standing around doin nuffin.
And also they know ur goin around gettin quotes.
So if crash 1 says $1000 and it will take 1 week.
crash 2 says $1000 and 3 weeks.
Who u gonna goto?
mate try fabio at I&J crash at lonsdale thats where my calais is at the moment does good job in the past just hope he does good job with my car lol.....

I havn't really found that - the culprits are construction workers and car related people really!
We build websites at work, and if we say it's going to take 2 weeks, it damm well takes 2 weeks even if we put in overtime.
Anyway... wyndup, chris did my engine bay, very nice job on it too. :)

At the end of the day it the owners choise

not all construction workers are like that mate so donot single us out........
car trade and building trade are the same thing, you can't turn work away,
so you take it on and hope or pray that it happens, if you don't you find out
the work drys up pretty quick, and while you are doing one job you lose
the upcoming ones and when you finish that first job, there are none to start on
next....it is a fine line, but the way it works, only tradepeople could understand this maybe.
And you engine bay job woudn't be a priority, just a fill in job inbetween
the real money making jobs.
cheers

i dident mean it like that steve iam talking about the poeple that rush there job and cut corners everywhere
lol
and you got it darren you no how it works
iam sure u wont cut corrners chris will u
Leaving wiring and hoses in an engine bay is cutting corners.
You spray in a direction and if someting is in your pathway , behind it dosent get sprayed.
So after the first coat , u let those areas flash off so u can look around the engine bay.
Once ur ready for the second (and last coat) u go around the engine bay shootin clear in those areas.
Once that is done you apply your final coat.
Sounds good??? well this is 2pak we r talking about here.
Those missed arears u painted over , due to them being missed to begine with come out a bit peely.
The areas around that peel come out really flat and may even sag.
Cause the overspray from paintin thos mist bits seperatly melts into the last coat.
So those areas get an extra half coat ontop of 1 last coat.
And simply the more wet paint in there , the easyer it is to run.
Altho a good painter nows this will happen and wont paint it as wet to run it.
But u do get a really wet flat section , right next to a peely dry section.
So an un even finish in ur engine bay.
But ppl dont notice that.
Altho the best way is to actually have the engine out.
And u stand were the engine is.
Then u can get paint to areas unobtainible b4.
(cause when ur painting from the outside of the car u can only paint areas which u see and are assesble to the spray gun. If u cant actually see it how can u paint it?)
But that basically comes down to how much money u have , how long are you willing to wait for the engine to be out and put back in.
And more importantly , how good a job u want?
like you said its all up to the owner how far they want to go and how much money they want to spend
when i took my battery tray out i just welded up my holes grinded it, primed paint, does take a while to do if you want a killer job.
Just make sure you have the whole car covered up from over spray

Half the post's in here, have completely terrible spelling. SA guys, do me a favour. If you cant spell, use spell check.
But yeah.
If you want Darren, I can talk to my brothers mate, he works at a place down south (Near Brighton) and I could probly get you done as soon as you want. From what I have heard they get a fair amount of nice cars in there, so they cant be bad.
Let me know.
My mate a crash repairer ,told me it was better to put on acrylic clear
for now if we paint the bay with wiring still in, and when we do the twin cam
do it properly, pull the wiring and use 2 pak clear
cheers
darren
U can put the acrylic clear down.
But do u really want to fk around with paint stripper or something like that to strip the acrylic clear off?
Cause u can put 2pak clear over acrylic clear.
But it may fry up. Also the solvents released from the acrylic may cause the 2pak clear to flack off done the track.
Specially considering engine bay temps in theroy could cause the acrylic to release its solvents and get traped under the 2pak.
Do it once and do it right the firt time.
Ow n matt i dnt *** cr if i dnt spll rite.
Not my problem:), i've had enough of spraying cars, he can do it if it ****s
up;) , but thanks for the heads up
I stick to house these days
cheers
