Hey everyone I have a 5L VL Calais. Do you get much more power by using thermos over belt driven fans? How much do thermos cost and how hard are they to fit yourself?

Thanks everyone, Im told you can use thermos from an AU Falcon?

Theres actually an article in the tech section (search thermo fans) that explains everything and if u reda the post theres pricing in there as well. Has an answer to all the questions u asked

the cost of doing it would far outweigh the power gain (if any) that thermos would give

use twin AU falcon thermos, and an electric water pump.. minimal power gain.. i have heard over 15kW gain on a VLT

Do those cars with thermo's and no shroulds run uprated radiators?

I've tried a pair of 2 x 12" Davi's thermo's mounted directly on the radiator, at full noise they didn't pass enough air over enough of the core to keep it cool on a 30+ degree day with the a/c on.

When I pulled the thermo's off I could see a dirty part of the core where the air had been passing. I took a couple of measurements and it turned out only 30% of the radiator had air passing through it. No wonder it was getting hot. :P

i have 2 12 inch davies on mine pushing air from front of the car thru the front of the radiator and plus my clutch fan at full pelt its like twin thermos do nothing at all 2 make a difference in degrees sure makes a difference in power drains though lol thats why i dont use dem.

but nah i seen alotta cars using twin thermos with no shroud str8 onto the core and alot of them use standard radiators or radiators of other cars like a Torana with RB30ET with VLT Radiator as example.

i could get heaps of pics of them i just was always told you need a shroud or they dont work.

like why do people wach dem str8 on if its has been proven???
i know people with 1 16 inch fan on a VL no shroud

On my VLT I have no shroud, no clutch fan, 1 x 15 inch thermo on the front blowing air through and a 10" on the back sucking a bit more in - and it goes through the radiator and an intercooler and it keeps the car perfect all day long even on hot days. the 15" alone was ok, but it started to get a bit hot if i was stuck in traffic on hot days - the 10" on the back makes sure that doesnt happen again. I'm not sure if the 5L runs hotter than the RB's, but im sure there can't be that much difference.

irs all about airflow. stock fan pulls about 1400cfm, 1 x 12 pulls 450 cfm, 1 x 10 pulls 300 cfm, 1 x 16 pulls 1000cfm, set of aus are almost 3000cfm. this should explain why davies craig fans are designed as a/c fans not engine fans. they arent designed for what ppl are using them 4

man i dont think a 16 inch DC Thermo fan is a AC fan.

the 10 yea maybe your right but i think a 16 inch is abit big but anyways if you look on there site it tells you what to use on your radiator and i think its says 2X12 inch for VL.

any 1 know how much CFM of air the twin thermos on a Magna TR 92 model sucks.
