look for build tags on firewall. The more original the better.

check for rust, all though wont be as common in walkys as they are garaged a lot more than your stock vl.

Matey get yourself a copy of Australian Muscle Cars number 1 because it has a detailed buyers guide in it. If my scanner was working i'd scan it and email it to you. If I manage to get it up and working in the next few days I will. What's your email address??
Cheers.

Yeah genuine tags are very important, as well as service books.
The car should have all the factory pieces if not on the car then they should come with it in boxes.
Ring the local vehicle securities office to verify that the car is what it's supposed to be, by quoting the VIN and engine number.
There are lots of special things that identify the car as a genuine walky so you shouldn't have too many probs there.

Can any one confirm that there were only 9 calais type built with original numbers and if not why do the hsv books call it the sleeper model.

If buying a 'Commodore SS Group A SV' then you will want to check the info on the build plate and also the Holden VIN number that appears on the body coloured plate. It is a 6 digit number preceded by a J or L. Ring HSV and use this number to match it up with the build plate details to make sure the car is legit.

Yes there were Calais versions known as the "VL Commodore SS Group A SV Calais" Don't know how many and some may have been done by dealers instead of done at the factory. Not all of them are the same either as the body kits vary on them. HSV's record keeping back then wasn't as good as it should have been and details on individual cars is non existant. Was a real shame they didn't continue on from HDT with build sheets but i suppose they saw it as unnecesary due to all their cars of the one model name being all built to the same specs except for mine and the above mentioned Calais version.

A friend of mine has a dealer optioned calais front on his walky, this was formally TUFGPA in vic.

Looks better in my opinion.
