Hey, I've got a couple of r31 3ltr turbo engines here - i'm wondering if I can just bolt the turbo exhaust manifold up and plumb it all into my rb30e, and run it without spacing the head, just limiting it to a low boost (say 5-7psi). Just wondering if this is gonna pop anything or what. I would like to keep the N/A power low-down (when the turbo ain't working) and get a nice kick in the pants at say, around 3000rpm.

I remember a post somewhere in these forums with some guy saying he had done this......

I know that this ain't exactly "recommended" but I'm bored, so I'm wondering if anyone HAS done it, and what happened :)

Put an intercooler on and keep the boost low and it should be ok, your biggest problem with high boost will be detonation because of the higher compression.

if your only going to run that amount of boost you should be right without an intercooler, but anymore and you'll need one.

sorry about being so dumb but i cant get this straight.... is detonation to do with a lack of air or fuel or what?
please explain :)

i would love to 'bolt on a turbo' onto my vl and ive read heaps of really good info on commodoremods.com.
my biggest worry is insurance - those dirty ****s :-((
this would be considered a 'mod' but becuase its a turbo mod, insurance would go up lots. i like the sounds of this mod coz its got great power benefits, something fun to do, understand more about my car, cheaper than buying a vlt and buying a good condition rb30e and wacking on a turbo is cheaper than buying an out of condition vlt.

if i was to do this, i would like to keep my car insured as a straight 6. therefore, another q, is there anyway of disguising the turbo or hidding it position or covering it a little just to make me feel a little more confident about it being a straight 6 when a copper lifts the bonnet??? heheheh

cheers and sorry for the length

thers no real way to hide ur turbo (if only) and i think almost evry copper out there knows what a turbo is so theyd ping ya for it.

Is the R31 engine an RB20 or a RB25, i just found out that the exhaust manifold will not bolt up to the RB30 engine..

Might be a r30 then - its got the RB30ET in it - already checked that to make sure it would fit :)

Wonder how the mod would go if I use a rb25DE head and chuck the turbo on that?

Gerbs: u mean use the rb25det head on the rb30e block? coz that would create some ****in crazy power....
if you meant the rb25de head and then puttin a turbo on, y bother when u can get the rb25det head? i think thats wot u meant :-)[/quote]

You can't use the RB25DET head on the RB30E block, 'cause apparently the oil and water galleries are different. The RB25DE head matches up perfectly though.

So, I'm thinking, get the RB25DE head, get a head spacer or proper turbo pistons etc, and slap a turbo on the side. Could be fun! :D
