View Full Version : Insurance For A Walkinshaw
today i called NRMA and asked for a quote for a vl group a (walkinshaw) (witch i am going to buy late march next year) i told them i am 17 and that this car is my dads,so i want it insured as my dads so they said ok. then i told them i am going to be a listed driver. Only drive it 12 times a year. Then she asked questions where is it going to be parked most i said garaged and then she said what area is it going to be in i said rockdale. then i told them this car is only going to be driven on weekends. she the caculated it on the computer and she came the the conclution of $10,798 i was shocked i then asked how much is it if i insure it under just my dads name she goes it will be $4,950 i was still shocked that is still alot of money for insurance under my dads name who hasnt had any accidents in the last 5 years and has only had one accident in 26 years of driving.
i was wondering you guy with a group a how much you pay for insurance and what company are you with.
thanx

mate ring around.
just cars, shannons & Petros's Mob.....
I am 21 and insured with RACQ, it costs me about $1200 for full comprehensive and it is in my name.
pjs83 how much is yours insured for? i told them that i wanted to insure mine for $30,000
It's only insured for market value witch is about $20,000. I would like to insure mine for what it's really worth but I don't think It's worth it considering the extra money you have to pay especially since I only do about 2000 ks a year in it.

When I was told market value for a walkinshaw was 20k I asked them to find one for that price and I would give them $1,000 for their service!
Call Shannons, I pay about $1,600, and that includes provision for any legal modifications.
Thanks mate i'll give them a try.
hey Walkie i was wondering how old you are are you over 25 or under

27/ 2 speeding fines over the past 5 years with no at fault accidents in that time/Agreed value of 25k + value of any mods. I can increase the agreed value but I need to take it in for inspection.

I am 36, rating 1, and have mine insured through RACQ, fully comprehensive, market value, and the last premium was $751.
I also have an FX Holden which I have insured with Shannon's for agreed value. The policy seems to be good - my choice of repairer, I get to keep the wreck if it's written off, etc. I looked into going through them with the Walky too for an agreed value. Because (I think) the car is more modern than my FX there are some different conditions. For example, I wouldn't keep the wreck if it was written off. Also because it's much more of a theft risk they won't insure it without an immobiliser fitted, which I don't have at the moment.
thanx guys i am going to call shanons soon hopefully thay give me a good deal
thanx

Pjs83, can i ask how on earth you got a $1200 comp. quote from RACQ at 21 years of age????
I sold my Walkie in January 04 at which time i was paying a tic under $1400. But i am over 25, no claims EVER, no mods, approved immobiliser fitted AND i had my house, boat and daily driver all insured through RACQ which entitled me to a juicy discount. It was also garaged in one of the 'safer' suburbs of Brisbane. Market value as well.
I also just ran a 21 year old through the RACQ online quote ticking all the most desirable attributes. Rating 1, garaged in a good suburb and so on.... And the closest i could come for you was almost $1500 and that was assuming you met ALL the most favourable criteria.....
So what was your secret? If you don't want to tell me then i will pay you to come along as my insurance broker when i buy my next car later this month :)
Cheers

No secret mate, I thought what I was paying was quite allot but after hearing what other guys pay I realise I'm getting a pretty good deal! I have been insured with RACQ since I was 17 so I geuss thats why they're giving me a good price, however, I don't see how someone over 25 could be paying more than someone 21??????????
Either do i, obviously i'm just a crap negotiator lol. I've been with RACQ all my driving life too, i might use you as a precedent when i get my next car insured :) 'a 21 year old is paying less than what i am, i wanna know what's going on, i want a years free comp. for pain and suffering' haha.
I'm 28 and have my walky and nissan patrol both insured through racq on the same policy and only paying about $1400 a year for both cars.
Thats a pretty good deal. Are they both comprehensive?
****e, thats a pretty good deal. Are they both comprehensive?
yep both comprehensive. getting multi-policy discount and member discount plus never had a fine for anything or been involved in an accident.
anyone got the number for racq .where bouts they at
go to www.racq.com.au or call 131905. they're in qld
youd expect to insure a walkly to be expensive cause how many of them are profesionaly stolen and never seen again.
I just got a quote off shannons, $794 for full comp insurance (covered for $25 000) so if anyone is thinking of changing insurance companys you should try them first.
Shannons will not accept anyone under 25 years of age with the inurance in your own name no matter how good your driving record is or the classification of insurance (i.e. restoration etc). That is what I was told by Shannons in W.A when I first bought my Walkie (23 / female / no fines or anything / max no claim bonus). They basically said go away till you are 25. SGIO said the same and Just Car Insurance wanted an excess of $1300.00 and would not insure the car for more than $15K as that is what they said it was worth (I just said to the lady on the other end of the phone 'Hmmm don't think so mate hehe).
I ended up going with HBF Insurance, paying $1300.00 a year full comprehensive and they said they would up the car value once more was done to it etc after an inspection at a HSV sales showroom). That was with an agreed value. RAC wanted $2500.00 a year with an inspection by an RAC inspector.
I'm 22 and they accepted me no worries, I know other guys under 25 who are insured with them too.
As I said, Shannons in W.A. You are in QLD (pjs83) and maybe it is different. Over here they said that they do not insure drivers under 25 years of age with that vehicle in a policy of their own name or as a regular driver on say a policy in your parents name. Sounds like they differ a bit from state to state aye. It was not because of driving record either, so yeah just shop around. Over here we have a phone line called insurance hotline who do the shopping around for you. I have never used it but know of people who have and got a good deal. Maybe there is something in your state like this. Good luck with it :)
Shannons will accept drivers under 25... But I had the advantage of having been listed on 2 of my fathers classic car policies with them (for MGs) and also they like people who are car club members/CAMS license holders. Im 19, and decided on only 3rd party property/fire/theft, as I think it unlikely I'll be in an accident where I am at fault, and I can't afford the extra premium. NRMA actually ended up being BY FAR the cheapest. It costs me $279 a year, I have had my license suspended for 6 months in the past - 2 speeding tickets, I have my mate and my gf also listed on the policy, and they have both also had their licenses suspended for speeding. Although none of us have had an accident. Stupid thing is, I asked about adding a 1986 1.5l pulsar to the policy (my gfs car) and they wanted more to insure it than my v8 calais!!
Haha u got your license suspended for 6 months for speeding and you dont think its likely you'll cause an accident...? Is your dad Peter Brock? :)
LOL^^
i got a qoute for full comp on a stock vl calais with aero bodykit...$2970 through RACV i then went to just cars $1999..what a load of crap...that was full comp and agreed value of 5 grand... how do they expect young people to insure their cars wen prices are so ridiculous
