Is it worth puting six inch speakers into my doors in my vl or just use the old 4inch spaces. I can pick up a fairly good set of 4 inchs cheap, and theres less mucking around. Or should i goto all the trouble and by 6inches?

View Full Version : 4 inch speakers - pros and cons SIK VL 26-06-02, 22:29 Is it worth puting six inch speakers into my doors in my vl or just use the old 4inch spaces. I can pick up a fairly good set of 4 inchs cheap, and theres less mucking around. Or should i goto all the trouble and by 6inches? ^Mobil_HRT^ 26-06-02, 23:26 Unless you are really serious about sound, don't bother. If you can get a decent set of 4's, they still sound quite nice, they just won't have the bass that the 6's have. my88vl 28-06-02, 20:03 As HRT has said, its all about what you want. If you want good sound positioning and a bit more thump then 6" are probably better but if its just something to go a bit hard and sound ok... grab the 4's i mean i've gone for the good crisp sound and really good acoustics but its all about what ya listen to. rb31 666 19-07-02, 11:19 it could also depend on the quality you want... if your goin for cheap 4"s you have to think about how long they'll last and what they sound like or (if you have the $$$) go for a set of high quality 6's which might sound better and last longer.... but also as the other two said  it also depends on taste proph3cy 21-07-02, 22:37 unless you have ya back ones up loud anyway or faded a lil to the back the front speakers are gunna be all ya hear!!!!! I had alpin 4" front and 6" rear and a clarion 12" Sub in the boot and ya needed the front to be all treble cos the bass of the sub was totally enough PSI086 22-07-02, 16:30 i have pioneer 4" splits in my car and they sound excellent. they lack the bass of a 6" speaker but with subs and 6x9's in the back there is enough punch anyway. ashes 25-07-02, 22:21 go for the 6 inch. I got my 6 inch ones put in bout 2 weeks ago, in the doors and they are so so much powerful. My 4's couldnt give bass with out distorting. These ones are so powerful, and they are only 140watts platinum 25-07-02, 22:44 The kenwood dualmag 4"'s sound really good! They are about $199 a set though and pink ;) ... but apart from that... Kylie 02-09-02, 01:55 I just finished installing my Stereo in my VL and I used Pioneer 3-Ways in the original spaces and Clarion 6x9s in the back and the 4" work very nicely. The 4" on their own are rather impressive (Although they did cost me $100) and the imaging is just as good as Splits. Remember, the reason Splits are usually better is because the Tweeter is positioned to face towards you, which the original VL Speaker Spaces do anyway. And the advantage is that nobody can see that you've got nice speakers to steal as well. If you're going to go for the 6" option, remember that any decent Speaker will have to have a Spacer in the Door so that the Magnet doesn't hit the window. Good 4" with good 6x9s give some pretty impressive Bass and a Sub would only make it better. I'm running the 4"s of the Head Unit and the 6x9s are running of a 30W (15W RMS) Amp and I'm more than happy... :D SIK VL 04-09-02, 21:52 well actually the reason i thought about 4'' was to do with people not being able to see them. Power would be suppled by an amp. Not quite sure of specs. I think about 100w peak per channel. I have 6x9s on the shelf. Perhaps i could put in 6inchs but put a cheap grill over them to divert wouldbe theifs a little. But a stelth install is what im aiming 4. Basically if i have enough bass supplyed by the 6x9s, the midrange and trebble from the 4 inchs should be sufficiant. Or do i need a resonable amount of bass from the 4inchs to be happy? Kylie 04-09-02, 22:08 6x9s in the back should give you enough Bass, especially if they're running off an Amp. Front 4" 2-Ways or 3-Ways will give excellent Treble and Midrange (and Bass as well, but not alot) as long as you buy quality. Of course having 6" Splits would give more Bass, but then for the money you would probably be better off trying for a 10" or 12" Sub Setup. If a stealth Install is what you're after, just go for the 4"s, especially in a VL, the original spaces are too good to waste. I've just done it and I'm impressed with the setup... ;) VL Commy 10-09-02, 19:08 personally i would go for the 6" splits setup with the woofer in the door and tweet positioned in the factory 4" position. I'm saying this basically because i think you'll find that otherwise you'll find your soundstage drifting way to the back of the car which would be good for passengers riding in the back seat but not so good for you as the driver. my88vl 10-09-02, 19:43 VL Commy has a point. In the VL i had Pioneer splits in the door with the tweeters mounted up in the corners of the dash, angled up towards the driver/passenger, but still projecting some of the sound off the windscreen. If you listen to alot of stuff with a little less bass, or a fair bit of vocals, the Pioneers are good, but for a deeper bass sound, and less harsh note from the tweeters, go for something like JL's or even Kicker.
