Hi Guys,

Has anyone increased their walky in power stakes and left their brakes standard?

My car is going in on monday to get a new ECU and a few other little things to make use of the cam / injectors that is in it and I am wondering how the brakes will stand up.

I seem to think currently with 195.4 HP or so at the treads (misfiring and running like crap admittidly) it is a little under braked.

Also as an aside what do they handle like with +300HP does anyone wish to comment. Standard suspension obviously with maybe a top strut brace or something.

Thanks in Advance for any info.

Evan.

Mate the walky brakes are terrible, even with standard power! I have been looking to upsize brakes for some time. I have been told VN Group A rotors will fit...JUST, so keep your eyes open for them, they are apparently much better than the VT upgrade.
You mentioned a retune, what ECU do you intend to run. The reason I ask is that I know walky owners who have had Haltechs installed and then removed due to cold idle problems. I just got my delco retuned this week, and with similar mods for what you mentioned (cam, blue top injectors, exhaust) it pulled 184.5kw at the wheels, which is about 250hp.

Hey Walkie,

Yeah I am going the plugin route with the Haltech E6GMX - I would love to go motec but the plugin ability is good for me and I can put the additional cash in a few more areas.

It is going to a dyno shop that is well used to setting these units up so I am putting a lot of faith in the workshop who interestingly enough has a lot of runs on the board for quality work. I will let you know how it goes with the cold idle, at current it will randomly stall and be a b|tch now and it has had the IAC replaced once before.

I will give an update of the new power achieved. I will most likely overhaul the ignition system and switch to MSD or something ... see what the tuner recommends.

I am definately getting the fuel into it with 30L / 100ks on a good day and a AFR of 14.25 from 1500 - 6800 RPM (it has had the rev limit bumped up and I may even bring it up to 7K yet) I want to drop this fuel figure a touch but will see what the ECU will do. So it will be interesting to see what the porting / cam and injector combo is worth.

My target is 450hp at the treads with a stroker or something else down the track but this will keep me happier in the mean time.

I also have 3.7 diff gears so the engine is reving a bit more and the cam thats in it is lumpy as ... hunts it ass off in 5th gear @ 70k's and has nothing sub 3000 but when it gets there is just unleashes upto 6400-6500 which is loads of fun. But we all know its a group A so you should have some fun.

Will post an update of figures when I get my baby back in a few weeks.

I will keep my eyes out for some VN brakes then ... I would love to go harrop or something but will see how much I am left with after this expenditure.

A mate of mine has DBA gold slotted and drilled rotors.

brakes a little better than stock he says (thats with the right pads and fluid)

How about a 3 inch exhaust for a mod.

Mates walky ran a flat 14 with just a 3inch exhaust.

I wouldn't put cross drilled and slotted DBA rotors on my 4 cyl...

They crack really bad if you use the brake a bit....

Check these pics out:

Illusive:-

Oh Sh|T .... that doesnt look good ... a cracked rotor ... no good. I havent seen a DBA crack like that before. I had a cracked mag spoke on my old VL heheheh but I havent seen a rotor lookin like that before.

AP Racing have some good packages around 3.5K or so that may be worth going with I don't know. I will be staying away from cross drilled and most likely going slotted only.

VLT-Dreamer:-

Yeah the 3" system was in before I got it so flow is no drama, I would love a twin system but you cant always have it all. Some semi metallic cats will be going in although - the epa will kill me if it was checked, previous dude did the age old empty the cat trick. What is it every car I have got has always had the cat removed.

Everyone else:-

Dyno place rang up today. They are not going to hoist it cause the hoist isnt going to fit & they have a fear they are going to damage it which is fair enough. Guess I am going to have to find a pit to to the lube job on the diff and g'box and replace the handbrake cable myslef. Not happy!!!! but they are playing it safe.

Something to swell the head though it is drumming a lot of interest for the workshop .. Autospeed were in having a good perve at it when I was in dropping of the KN filter. The mechanic said he is spending half the day keeping everyone away from it. I am glad its in the condition to get some interest. I can't wait to get it back running some power!!!!!! I will post the dyno chart to show what it finished up as at this stage.

Yeah go with slotted... the dba cross drilled & slotted aren't heat treated, so the cross drills expand and contract when really hot, causing them to crack.... This was from a race meet, but I have seen them crack from road use....

The dba slotted rotors are ok I believe, but the normal ones still aren't intended for racing...

Yes Craigt, but considering it gets drive about 3 weekends a year, can see them getting too hot.

Got it back running the E6GMX and it got 291 RWHP ... so it is very very fun to drive now. I will update with dyno pic soon.

My girlfriends 250KW Clubbie got 274 on the same dyno stock so I am very happy.

The idle at cold is a bit ordninary .. IAC is a bit slow but once its warm it runs on full song very nicely.

get a set of 343mm harrop 4 it of ap racing. kits are about 2.5k. just keep the original brakes if u decide to refit them when u sell it
