Stolen and Recovered.

Shaun’s VL turbo was due to be one of the first cars to enter the feature car section of this forum back in December 09 / January 2010. With the car nearing completion it was a sure thing, until disaster struck. Read on to find out what happened.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702724888_6eb654a8bd_b.jpg

The ingredients for a quick street VL turbo are pretty simple really. Install ‘cooler, exhaust – add boost. That’s how Shaun’s began when he first purchased it back in 2006. With interceptors all ‘round and a pretty neat paint and body scheme things were peachy.
As with most young men Shaun discovered boost and going fast were healthy ingredients and worked on the philosophy of ‘If some is good, more is better’.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702092365_971e2e4aa5_b.jpg

He went up to Summernats 2009 and worked out what he wanted from his VL. It must be clean, fast and able to be entered in to the odd show or two. He decided to rebuild the car in time to show at Summernats 2010.
It all started out with an engine rebuild. Some forgies, a 35/40, JD Custom plenum, ICE ignition and a few other go-fast parts. The engine is backed by a 3-speed full manual trimatic auto with a 5000 convertor which takes the punishment of the 310rwkw developed by 22psi being force-fed into the RB30.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702725208_cf5e612ac1_b.jpg

For those emotional VL turbo fanatics it’s time to grab a box of tissues for the tears, that’s if you aren’t already using one gorking at the photo’s.
On the second night of Shaun’s 2010 Summernats expedition the VL was stolen. Some low lives had snuck in to where he was staying and pinched three cars – This being one of those three. Shattered is probably an understatement in trying to describe Shaun’s feelings at this stage. So much time and effort put in to complete this car and someone thought that they would just take what they couldn’t create themselves.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702092635_0cdcf15789_b.jpg

With a reward on offer for the return of the car and tips and leads from calaisturbo.com.au users the car was rumored to be hidden in Sydney somewhere. As it happens the information was good. The car thief was arrested and the car returned to its rightful owner with only a few minor pieces missing.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702092835_8606770eaa_b.jpg

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702725806_6ab0596730_b.jpg

Once it was finally back in Melbourne and everything was returned to its former glory Shaun decided to stretch the VL’s legs at Heathcote and see what this bad boy could muster. He managed to run 11.20 @ 128mph off the foot brake – A quick street-car in anyone’s book. He’s eager to break in to the 10-second zone and the mile-per-hour is indicative of this.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702725658_f06b7acda2_b.jpg

There’s a 2 speed Power glide getting ready to be slotted in place of the ‘traumatic’ 3-speed to assist in proving the car to run 10’s as well as give Shaun the piece of mind that the driveline is up to the task and not going to leave him stranded somewhere.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/COLEYZ/4702093417_20b0150df9_b.jpg

Shaun’s future plans for the car are pretty realistic and he’s not setting further goals beyond that until he gets what he was originally aiming for. It’s neat, it’s street and it can enter a show but it’s just that 10 second time slip that is missing at the moment.
Somehow I can’t imagine that Summernats 2011 is on the cards.

This makes me want a white VL so bad :( The quality of this car is right up there with the best street/show cars, the owner should be very proud.
Also, Brett, great photography! I'm assuming you used Photoshop or the Photoshop editing software to get such a great finish?
Also, do you mind me asking what camera/attachments you were using & a rough cost?

I do use photoshop. This one a little more than the others only to adjust the light as it was on sunset when we were shooting.
I used a Canon 1000D (Basic DSLR) with a remote flash, 18-55ml lense and polarising filter.

Thanks for the comments :)

Yeah I wouldn't blame ya man. I don't want to enter a car there. Mates car vy ss wagon got dented while cruising around as guys tried ripping his sister from the passenger seat. ---------- Post added 31-12-10 at 11:52 ----------

Does that mean all new fuel system?

Yeah mate. Totally different fuel system for E85 as it burns faster so u need to have massive fuel delivery. Car now has a RCI 15 gallon (57ltr) fuel cell, half inch fuel line to the rail 3/8 return, turbosmart FPR1200 fuel reg, twin 044 pumps, bosch 2200cc injectors with billet rail adapters.

I had mine shortened and converted to drums, cost of shortening was $300 and then all the parts to make it complete, 31spline moser axles was $900, full spool $400, gears I already had an then have it all installed all up around 2k but like I said I already had new gears so whatever that's worth add to the list

Its works on the same principal as sleeveing a alloy block. The head is drilled with a special drill bit to within .004 of a thou, Then the head is then put in a hot tank to heat it up so the hole expands and the sleeves are put in liquid nitrogen to shrink them, a special paste is applied like liquid metal and the sleeves come straight out of the nitrogen and put in the holes, as the head and sleeves come back to normal room temp the sleeves expand and the head shrinks to make it an even tighter fit.

The reason they do this is to even out the clamp load on the head and so the studs dont bite down into the alloy giving you a fulse clamp load read out on ur torque wrench when tightning the nuts.

Not that I know about. Im just using a standard one Jase! If your standard pump handles 9000+ RPM, max RPM mine will see is 8500, should be fine. Hope so anyway lol.

just curious mate whats the difference between the solid engine mount and stock ones

I have put a solid mount on the passenger side to stop the engine from twisting, the drivers side is still a stock rubber mount to absorb some of the engine vibration. I didnt have a solid mount with the last set up with the GT35 and the engine was twisting that much under full load that the front housing would touch the bonnet and the powerglide mount on the gearbox cross member is all twisted and out of shape. The front cover on the GTX42 is close to the strut tower if i had a normal 1 in there everytime i loaded up the car it would smash into the tower.

Looking really good there mate. I'm looking at getting one of those Fuelab pumps. Are you running yours constant full speed or how are you controlling it?

You cant run them consistanly on full flow you will burn the pump out and/or over heat the fuel. I have the 1800 EFI pump PN# 42402-C prodigy fuel pump with the electronic reg that controls the pumps speed via a sensor in the return line side of the reg, PN# 52902.
http://fuelab.com/fuel-pressure-regulators/529-series-electronic-fuel-pressure-regulators.

I work for Premier Auto Trade who is the Australian distributer for Fuel Lab products.

When in Orlando in December at the PRI (Performance Racing Industry Show) I saw this pump and reg in action on the stand and was impressed at how effective and smart the reg is to control the speed of the pump.

In the pic I have a Turbosmart FPR2000 fitted to the car but that has now been taken off and replaced by the Fuel Lab 52902 electronic fuel reg.

A few of the big street/drag cars over there are running the same set up.

Im chasing an 8.9. It wont be easy as im only using a 26x10 tyre. There is a few people that have already done it ( AIR747, JETF18, QWIKVL & PANNIC) but i'd still be happy with a low 9 if thats all we can get.

Sorry to ask another question regarding the diff but, are you still running disk brakes and standard suspension? Cheers

Where did you buy the cepters from

AJAX Wheels Moorabbin. You can't just walk in and buy them. You have to work out what rear offset you want, take in to old interceptors and they cut the centre out and weld them to whatever width rim you want. Sizes are 3.5" - 8" wide.

---------- Post added 27-03-13 at 09:06 ----------

if you shorten the diff as much as mine you cant run disc rear. Im now running a shute at the track so that didnt bother me. As for suspension, Its still standard but you will have to make a small mod to the lower control arms. You have to cut the outter rolled edge off the lower arm and then get the arm boxed, as cutting that rolled edge off the arm it loses its strength. See pic below, you will see the outter rolled edge missing and a laser cut gusset welded in for strength, under the gussets there is 4 to 5mm plates also welded to the inside. See STIX in "For sale advertised" thread for the laser cut gussets. Hope this helps.

Yeah I can fit a 26x10 or a 255x60 but the rolling diameter of a 255 is 27" and it sits to high. plus it comes down the the cost of the tyres! As Im tipping the first set wont last long on the car!! lol Transbrake and a **** load of power = Fun!!!! lol

In regards to the EB2, the wires can be extended as its just a bare loom that comes out of the EB2 and out of the electronic solenoid, so you can make it how ever long you need it.

What's the go with tacho and digital tacho?

I ripped the standard shift light off and put the digital on because it has a multipul stage light that is hooked up to the 2 step. The LED's flash green when it hits the 2 step and yellow to shift gear. If you look into it online the digital unit has heaps of extra features when it come to the workings of the light. But I found it hard to read the digital tacho reading because the camshaft makes it jumps around a lot. Just personal prefernce I guess.

Update!!!!

The first dyno session when really well. We have to change a few things but nothing major.

We are still on a run in tune, so we cant rev it past 6500rpm and it has F all timing in it. but the figures are as follow, 280rwk on 18psi @ 6300rpm on total timing on 15 degrees.

Now to do 500kms so I can take it back and up the limiter to 8500rpm, turn the boost up and put some more timing into it.

Had an awesome arvo driving it around today!

I have done the run in Kms and had it back on the dyno. We got it to 430rwkw on 34psi and its blowing out the spark and we maxed out the Eboost as it only has a 17psi spring in it. A few changes to be made then we will put it back up for a 40psi run.
