No doubt you've seen it. Everyone knows it.
This is Paul's VL Calais Turbo. It's one of those VL's that inspires others to build something fast and classy. This one has a little something special though, being able to run the car on LPG means Paul can get the most out of a high octane fuel whilst keeping the cash in his pocket and not donating it to the service station. Gas has a high octane rating and it's half the price of petrol.

Let's get to it. This Calais runs the obligatory RB30ET engine but has a nice shiney new addition. Hidden down below that famous spaghetti manifold was a low mount GT35 but now sitting high and mighty is the polished Garett T51R. It smiles at you with a glistening shine.
It's currently pumping 26 pounds of boost down through the Garett intercooler, through the custom plenum and finally towards the forged pistons where it's mixed with LPG and torched by the teamwork of the Haltech IG5 ignition and the Crane coil to create a stomping 354rwkw.

Helping convert the new-found power rearward is another new addition by the way of a 2-speed Powerglide auto and 3200rpm stall. This has replaced the trusty old 3 speed in the hunt for power and reliability. Having the same top gear ratio there's no lack in driveability between the two units.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/GAS747/4450448130_212850dcdf_b.jpg

The twisting motion is propelled down the tailshaft and into the faithful VL turbo diff which has proven that it's up to a beating with countless transbrake launches on slicks at the track.

GAS747 has had a range of wheels along the way and it's no wonder when there are so many choices available for when you get sick of looking at your car the way it is. At the moment it's sitting on polished Calais 15's but I'm sure a new set of wheels won't be too far away. Behind the dishes sit a VT brake upgrade for extra stopping power - A good thing to have with this much power under your right foot.

As with much of this car the interior is also an area of change. Originally with an immaculate VL Calais interior this was upgraded a few years ago to a HSV Coulson interior which pulled the luxury of the Calais from the 1980's into the late '90s. As the car has become more powerful the constant chase for quicker times inevitably leads to having a lighter car so the Coulson's have been shifted for a more race inspired ****pit.
The rear set was removed all together to fit the roll cage and upfront a set of Velo Milano leather race buckets sit. Strapping Paul and his co-pilot hard into the cow skin are some nice big race harnesses. This interior screams 'RACE CAR'.

http://www.calaisturbo.com.au/images/FeatureCar/GAS747/4450447574_0fd1a2b6b6_b.jpg

Paul is yet to race the car with the new turbo, convertor, auto and interior but there's no doubt that the infamous GAS747 is going to go faster.

thanks for all the positive comments guys, i know the car has been a lil "weathered" over the years but thats to be expected. of course its not street driven as much as previous but I still get it out as much as possible.

I still need to redo the bottom end, the original 10 year old bottom end is still in the car! Once i do the bottom end ill paint the bay and fix a few bad area's on the car lol

Great write up PROGMH n Paul well done on a mint calais. I still remember my mate taking me to the warrigal rd pizza shop 1 friday nite ages ago after u had been at calder n he was going to get u to take me for a spin as id never been in a fast VL before and i needed that extra push to go n buy/build one myself. u had just got off the freeway n u stopped at a set of lights a few hundred meters away from the pizza shop where we were n we could here u spooling up the turbo the we heard u launch it and then we heard this all mights BANG!!!!!!!! we ran down there to find you on the phone to a tow truck as on the launch ur tail shaft had slit in half!! I was shattered as i was seconds way from going for a spin with u. From that night on i said to my mate i was going to build a fast VL that looked the part! and im pretty shore ive done just that. Just a trans holding me bak from that 10 sec pass now. Cant wait for that 2 speed. haha!

lol the cars heavy man, has a 6 point mild steel cage in it. it weighs heaps! the front seats would help getting it back to a decent weight though.

im happy with the door trims but thx for the offer :P haha

Should look good with a set of Et's. What size tyre are you hoping to fit?
Thinking of ditching the standard shocks and springs for a set of coilovers?

hey dude, nah just gonna go the same slick size just 26 X 10 but on a 8.5" rim this time instead of 7". So on the street should fit a 275 on it. im not doing it for the tyre, im doing it cos i want convo;s on the car lolol

Ill try keep the stock shocks etc, but if i have complications i might need to replace. ill keep ya posted!

suxgas
05-04-10, 09:48
If your aiming to fit a 275/60/15 et's on the street you will have complications.

Before mine got out of hand it started out the same idea, basically you'll need to remove your standard stocks and springs, modify the standard tubs slightly (cut and shut no sledge hammer sh-it),setup new tubular lower arms, setup a good brand coilover and everything should work very well.

If you allow a 275/60/15 to fit then you shouldn't have any drama using a 28/10.5 slick for racing.

Here are to pictures of how yours should look after your transformation. (thats as low as the car goes with 275s)

lol @ out of hand, i know what you mean I can see that happening.

Im just going to take the car to allrace with the rims fitting with 26 X 10" slick and get them to fit it. what ever i can fit on for that street past that i will do.

But thanks for the info man, ur car looks good on the convos!

Jet R31
15-04-10, 17:39
Aren't the 275/60/15's the same size as a 28x9?, so they would fit on a 7 inch rim, but not on a 8.5, same problem i am having with mine, then you have to tub, so you might as well put on a 28x10.5 on a 10 inch rim..lol

GAS747
26-05-10, 15:31
Yeh just trying a few things out, currently its got a .84 housing on it, im going to try a 1.00 and see what that does.

its def lost a bit since iv put the glide in cos in 2008 the car went 10.58 and lifted the head the car has more power now and still went slower but at least its stronger i guess :)

Im not in a massive rush my new house is more important but ill just do stuff when iv got time. Pretty impressive considering that bottom end is 10 years old never been refreshed lol stock rods too!

Epitaph
26-05-10, 15:42
it shouldnt go slower with the glide though, sounds like converter and gears need tweaking to me

GAS747
26-05-10, 15:46
yeh the convertor's already been out once, might have to come out again.

Its hard to judge cos i havnt raced it back to back with the old auto compaired to the glide. anyway time will tell, no rush just when ever its done ill slap it on the dyno and see wot it makes.

It only did a 1.59 60 footer too the best its done is 1.49 so its a fair bit off on the 60 footer

Aahh yeah i see that is a pretty small rear wheel for a t51r isnt it? Did you try the .84 so it would be a little more streetable. .84 is very streetable, comes up on boost really fast/hard! but when we pushed it to 25psi it started compressor surging on wide open throttle. ill see wot the 1.00 does, hopefully the surge goes away!

Yeh I take it out from time to time but stay well away from any hot spots, ur just asking for trouble then! so normally i just cruise with mates to somewhere away from the highway...

Should have put a Gt4294 or similiar 70mm turbo(precision) on it. The 76mm is
overkill unless you run at least 35psi. and probally slower for the application you want it for. Not the first
time i have heard them surge around that boost level either, worse with small cam and a motor built for more low down (6500 peak ) and not revs.(8 ish)
Hope you sort it
